in the demo in the begining, the main character is talking to himself and holds up a present looking object, and has a note on it saying "to Jack, with love, from mom and dad" the note says more, i just cant make it out. do you think this would mean that the players name is Jack?

Hmm... Well, I've been thinking that the opening sequence with the present is after the game, and everything you are playing is just a flash back. You're flying back home.
But the crash is from the orriginal plane ride. The present is from Atlas & friends.
But I really hope I'm not right.
That would not make any sense if you took time to fully think about it. Given the fact that during that scene is when the airplane hit a huge patch of turbulence and everyone started screaming. ( as it was fading to black )
ITS JACK from the show LOST on ABC. By the way his plain crashed too.
In the package is a satellite phone, a gun, and a re-breather. (yes, I know they wouldn't have one in 1960)
Well.. I could have sworn there was a podcast a long while back saying the char you play as was named Jack. I honestly do think there was one, just don't remember what one.
Anyways. When it comes to it showing your char holding the present, it could very well have been the thing that saved Jack in the first place...
There is one other posibility thats been overlooked.
What if the Jack in question is the main characters son?
Perhaps he [You] wrote the note and is flying home to give the present to Jack?
I haven't played the demo so this is all just theory on my part.
And to further add to that, to highten the emotional aspects of the game?
What if Atlas finds out through your communicating that you have a son and uses that as emotional blackmail to get you to do what he, as opposed to Tenenbaum (sp?), wants?
Yep, Jack is his name. Unless it's like Castaway and the main character is a UPS guy.

I assumed that the note said something about not opening the present until he gets somewhere or something, considering it says "Would you kindly..." then it cuts off. The reason I assume this is because it's not open on the plane.

Ok,so,here is the whole thing. It is filled withspoilers,but nothing to block it.
It is to "Jack"
Jack is you.
Atlas is Fontaine.
Fontaine gave it to you.
The phrase "Would you kindly" makes Jack obey.
It says "would you kindly not open this till'...."
Would you kindly=trouble!
Jack opened the box.
Jack shot the pilots.
The plane goes down.
The box contained a pistol.
And I think you can also make out something like "Do not open until..." on it.
"do not open untill (lat/long coordinates here)" the coordinates are in north atlantic though... not mid-atlantic as cut scene says... At least that's what I was told.
to jack... bla bla bla... would you kindly not open until <coordinates> from mom and dad
