    Will you incorporate humor?

I'm not talking Earthbound humor (altough brilliant), I'm talking subtle little bits of satirical humor. Little bits here and there, maybe on the signs and ads, that will give the player a good chortle. Maybe add some of the huxley type satire in there.

I think adding in dumb humor would ruin the game, no Adam Sandler jokes or Will Ferrel one liners. I do think that adding in some ironic or satirical humor would help the game quite a bit, as some of my most memorial parts of serious games have been the funny aspects. This holds especially true for Morrowind.

Allow me to sound like a broken record just one more time. Plasmi-quik was funny, while Gene-bank is not. Which means: people with a sense of humor are usually smart, while the rest... well they're slower and more dull.
Still, there's all those posters that show a solid sense of dark and cheesy humor which fits the era perfectly. So I'm really looking forward to some bittersweet smiles throughout the adventure.

I mentioned it in another post, I'm a bit too lazy to go back and find that post and quote or link it here, but as I've said before all the best horror movies through-out history have found a balance to horror and comedy.

The reason for this is quite simple, when you're exposed to horror scene after horror scene or dark moment after dark moment it creates a level of hyper-awareness to the situation you're in, like you're always waiting for that next "shock" so when it finally arrives the moment is dulled because you've been waiting for so long. How do you break up this monotony and take the player out of the "readiness" state? you make them laugh, a little humour in the right place can really calm that feeling of waiting for the next big scare, so when it does roll around it's all the more potent.

    Humour + Horror = Gold.

    Horror + Horror = Boring.

I like that comparison, seeing as movies and games are become more and more alike (especially in production values). I do enjoy movies like Evil Dead, altough the later ones became almost pure comedy, the original was a great blend of subtle humor and horror. I don't want clowns giving me a pie to throw in their face in an horror FPS, but some good humor added would be great.

not all horror/horror is boring, movies like The Event Horizon, and The Shining did great at terifying the viewer, they didn't just put scary scene after scary scene in front of you, but it did things to make you connect and forget about the horror for a second. While humor is a good medium for this period of being relaxed, I do believe that other means could be used. The little sister/big daddy relationship may make us stop to think about their bond, and if they shared love, or if it was instinctual. Then a splicer jumps down in front of us to jump us.

Both would be effected, but I'm hoping to get some good moments to share with my friends to crack a smile about.

Satirical humor would be perfect for BioShock.

It a really old technique to have humor in horror or otherwise emotional media such as games, movies etc.
Shakespeare himself did it in his plays, the Porter from Macbeth for example. I'm not too sure if the Greeks did it in their plays though.

Humor in horror is actually very important. It eases you up right before the big scare. One perfect example is the scene in Jaws in which Chief Brody is chumming for the shark and says to himself," Slow ahead. Yeah I can go slow ahead! How about you come down hear and shovel some of this **it" At which point the audience laughed, then probably gasped as they saw the sharks huge head burst out of the water.

Alien did something similar with Parker saying right before the birth of "Kain's son", "Come on Kain, the food ain't that bad."

It will be interesting to see how humor in Bioshock will be set up. My assumption is that it will be set up through advertisements within Rapture or conversations between Rapture residence.

I want to know what mediums they're using, and specifically if they use some satirical humor. The ads may have a little tongue in cheek humor, but I want the AI to do some unintentionally funny things, things that we now see as dated (seeing as they are from the past)

I've been thinking, humor does not have to be the only relief in order to magnify the horror. Another emotion such as sadness could be used.
Think about it, learning the history of some poor unfortunate soul of Rapture, maybe having to do with the Little Girls (since they are "innocent").
This is much harder to do of course, making the player connected to the citizens and actually feel sorry for them, until they jump out of nowhere scaring the hell out of you and having you kill them.

    Perhaps.

That would be funny if it said, "Rapture, the one safe place." That would be a nice bit Ironic humor.

I think it'd be really cool if the player found (or walks past, in the background) an interositor: http://forums.2kgames.com/forums/sho...88&postcount=6

I'd like smart humor in the game. No Family Guy humor, though, please .

I think they will - the plasmid instructions/advertisements are already funny (in my opinion) and I don't think they'd stop there. I think the Little Sisters and some of the other locals will have funny lines. How 'bout the Mr. Bubbles hopscotch song? That's hilarious, especially in the context of the environment.

lol that was pretty damn funny ,most of the splicers dialogue is pretty funny in a dark way like in the sence of watching a shell shocked war vet throw over a table and pretend to be firing a machine gun-although its sad and you know you shouldnt laugh in the back of yer mind youre laughing yer ass off

One of my favorite moments so far was in the 7 min clip video when the female splicer was at a shop door. "Open up already b****!" she yelled, and then got blown away by a grenadier!

Or the line the doctor who blew her up said as his death was brought about. "I hurt no one!" Not very subtle, but it made me chuckle to myself.

Haha, I love that, he says something after that, "What's the matter with just... (I don't know after that)", I thought that was pretty weird.

Event Horizon is a good example of how humour could be handled in an atmosphere like Rapture. I would prefer a dose of dry wit at the desperate situations you find yourself under.

For example, in EH, the crew members of the Lewis & Clark are all standing around a console viewing how the scientists from the EH ship commited acts of sadomasochism and tore out their innards whilst spewing Latin phrases of evil condemnation. Then the Captain shirks at the video and remarks "We're leaving". A perfect example of humour to diffuse the tension only slightly, and not enough to reduce it below the heightened level of anxiety which should be consistently maintained.

I think you used that same analogy (or a different one from the same film) in a similar thread. Either way, I love that film, and I agree that it is the ideal sort of humor for this game.

I thought the same as well when seeing this thread's title, so I found it in my archives and copied and pasted it, with little additions
