360. when playing online its taking me a very long time to research very simple techs (21) turns. and sometimes i never get to research any techs at all. any ideas why?

You have to have 'beakers' to research this. Ocean and desert tiles give you these beakers you need for research. If you have none of these in use, or very few, then it takes you a very long time to research things. Also libraries and universities will help you gain more beakers per turn and you progress through the game.
It's also a good idea to remember that the more cities you have, the more water or desert tiles you can work on at any given time. Hopefully that helps! If not then you need to clarify your point a bit more.

ive played offline since the game came out and can win consistently at the Deity level. and i know that the key to a good starting city is a balance between food, ocean and production. when i play online i can build units just as fast as others but any research takes way too long. it even goes to the point off offering me a research tech option say '5 turns for bronze working' but after 5 turns im still waiting. i go back into tech options and there isnt any numbers beside any tech. i dont have this problem when playing off line.

The rules to research is the same online and offline. Cost of researching divided by your total empire breaker= number of turns to research the tech. The surplus is transformed into gold. If there is no number it's because you don't produce any breaker or you're in anarchy.

Definitely an unusual situation you have there. Haven't heard anything like that happening in multiplayer since the game came out!
