PS3: "Soft" freeze - R2 button working

Does it happen often to you guys as well? In H2H I keep getting this about 1/3 of the times (like now). The PSN is working (I checked a friend account). Usually I get "waiting for <xyz>". Now not even that. Yesterday I waited and after 10-15 minutes it gave me the victory. Is there any way to unstuck it??? It usually happens at the beginning of the game (yesterday at 4000 BC, now at 2400 BC). This is so tiresome.

I know that I can sign off the PSN. But I want to get above that darn 200 points limit. Everytime I'm close to pass it I get this. The other guy is not quitting either. I can see his IP address in a network monitor (I wonder what the games are communicating since they are stuck, tho).

I've been getting nothing BUT freezes today... 4 out of 4 games, all of which I was leading, froze on me. Mostly with a 'soft' freeze, but one I had to turn of the PS3 to recover from...

It seems only to be getting worse... Oh well, I'll just try one more then.
