    *Official* Steam Support Thread

Since we have a lot of new players getting Bioshock on Steam for the $4.99 sale it also seems we have a a lot of new threads about support with the Steam version.

If we compile the main issues here maybe we can all help each other with the big issues.

    Good idea.

I also strongly suggest using the forum search function if you are having issues with the Steam version of BioShock. Although the recent promotion on Steam probably brought in many newcomers, the game has been available on Steam for well over a year. If you are having a problem with your game, there is a very good chance that someone else already had the same problem--and found a fix--long ago.

I have the STEAM version of BioShock and I had several problems.
I also have Vindows Vista as my operating system.

Here is my way to play Bioshock:

    - I have disabled "Tablet PC Optional Components"
    - I put "-dx9" parameter at the "set launch options" menu
(I think this is the only required step)
(right click to the games name at games list on steam, and click properties. You will see "set launch options" selection on "General" tab)
    - I didn't use "Windows XP sp2 compatibilty mode" (but if you still have problems, try that one as well)

I hope this information helps to other STEAM users.

and if possible I would like to play my game with dx10.
please let me know if it's possible to play BioShock with dx10 enchantment.

For Vista, to enable compatibility mode and other options - right-click on Bioshock in Steam and choose "Create Desktop Shortcut". From there on you have an actual shortcut to use with the instructions in the: Vista Specific Troubleshooting thread!

I've tried the -dx9 solution, along with XP compatability mode and also disabled the tablet settings. Still no dice, I CANNOT get this game to run. The logo comes up and then it just stops working.

Anyone have any other suggestions? I'm running Vista Ultimate 64-bit if that helps.

    Steam Problems

Is anyone else having alot of problems loading levels who ever purchased it off of steam for the pc for the 5$ deal. I have ran into loading problems since the end of smugglers hide out and even after thinking i fixed the problem and used a different saved file to start at Arcadia. It works fine intill another one of those rooms comes up where the door closes behind you but this time its to go to "bulkhead move to market" yet again stuck in the room but character playable and everything (doesn't freeze or nothing) wait to see if anything happens 15mins go by nothing.... Does anyone know or have fixed these problems or anything at all? (i've re-installed the game 2 to see if that was the problem but it wasn't)

    Everything is extremly dark

Hi, I just downloaded this game on Steam yesterday, so far the game seems alright, but, theres a constant problem im having where everything is VERY, VERY DARK. I have to fish around in the areas that dont have direct lighting for any items that might be there, basically, any spot that doesnt have a direct programmed source of light is very dark and pretty much impossible to see.

Ive already tried raising the brightness on my monitor, my video card settings and in the game, yet i still cant see worth beans.

Ive seen videos of the game, and what i see in those videos is certainly not what im seeing ingame.

seriously, this is even worse than playing doom 3, jeez, at least doom 3 had a flashlight i could use!

my video card is a 7600 gs btw...

any help on this would be apreciated, cause this is making it very hard to play.

and yes, in case anyone wants to mention it, im aware that the game is meant to be dark, but seriously, I cannot see worth ****!

Its not just ingame, even the options menu is overly dark. This just makes no sense :/

Ok, I just managed to get it working. If people are getting the "bioshock.exe has stopped working" error then try checking the integrity of the files (Right Click BioShock on Steam, Properties, Local Files, Verify Integrity of Game Cache).

Worked for me, but I have to run it in DirectX 9 or I can't change the resolution to 1920x1080 which is pretty annoying to be honest. Better than nothing I guess, suppose it's time to see if I can actually play it.

Edit: Ok, setting it to run in XP compatibility mode lets me run it in DX10. Let's see if it will play without crashing.

that makes no sense because DX10 doesnt run in XP compatibility mode.

Server 2008 x64, Steam, Freeze, No sound

I bought $5 worth of Bioshock on steam two days ago, still can't get it running properly.
I am running Windows Server 2008 x64 on an Intel Q6600, 4gb of RAM and an ATI 4870.

At first it would complain about GameExplorer, which server 08 doesn't have, so I switched it into XP compatibility mode.
Then it froze at the small "BIOSHOCK" splash screen. I changed the audio device in default.ini:
    ;AudioDevice=FMODAudio.FMODAudioSubsystem
    AudioDevice=D3DDrv.D3DAudioDevice
Then it froze at the copyright screen or whatever. So I added -nointro to the shortcut.
This got me into the menu which started stuttering and froze. So I added -dx9 to the shortcut.
Now I finally get in the game, get through the plane crash, and right after, all sound is gone.

What other hoops am I supposed to jump through to get this working? Preferibly in dx10 mode.

    Thanks

    Exclamation BioShock Steam version Problem

Ok, i get a double wammy of problems here.
I checked all over the forum and there was nothing so i decided to ask.

When i start up in the steam window i get a directX setup up saying that it cannot find dsetup.dll
Now this is when i have updated to the lastest everything thing in nVidia
drivers and DirectX. then afther I press ok i get Bioshock.exe has stopped working. Dont know if you guys need my specs but ill post if you ask.
Should i just delete bioshock off steam and reinstall? or is there a quicker way!

thanks this is my first time on forum/posting, I'M NOOB!!!

    Its a toss up.

I don't think your system specs really matter at this point. I've been scouring the forums all day and almost all if not all of the solutions I have seen for the PC & Steam DL PC version of Bioshock is this:

It is a toss up as to if it works. Why? No one knows. Forum users, Not people from 2K have offered up their work arounds which are basically hacks that have resulted from nothing more than trial an error.

The game is buggy, even when your system exceeds the minimum requirements, it may work. it may not work. And even if your systems does exceed the minimum, 8 / 10 times you have to turn most of the visual settings in the game down. WAY down so it will actually run with out crashing.

The game is fairly old and there shouldn't be this many problems at this stage in the game. A patch or official fix should be released. As of yet I have not seen one.

The bottom line is this thing is BROKE.

And I'm about 24 hours from demanding a refund for this thing.

I would say that the big issue is it doesn't run/ freezes and/or crashes before you can even play the game and gives no indication as to why it crashed.

    Exclamation sound problem

Hey, just bought the game on thursday and finished downloading it today, started it up and gchanged all my settings and whatnot, then I started the game and everything was fine until the plane crashes, then all the sound stops, i checked to make sure my headset was plugged in, i changed the audio settings, all that stuff but i havent been able to fix it... otherwise the game plays fine, no video problems or anything else.

ive got vista home premium 32 bit with a core 2 quad 2.44ghz, a 9800gt with 512 mb of video memory, and 3gigs ddr2 of ram.

    No steampowered

Heres another issue to toss on:

Since downloading Bioshock from steam... none of my steam games work. They don't even load anymore. Thanks Bioshock.

is there any chance we might get some support for any of this on the *Official* Steam support Thread??

    German Language

My sister bought Team Fortress 2, Half-Life 2: Episode 2, Portal and BioShock as a gift for me through Steam. She lives in Germany, and I received the censured versions of all four games. I don't love violence so that is not something that would stop me from playing. The problem is that BioShock is in German and nothing I do changes that. I guess I should address Steam support with that but I don't know who is responsible.

PS: I don't live in Germany so there is no problem with the violence graphical content of the English version in m region. Please help, the whole pleasure of playing the game is ruined in German for me.

I just downloaded the latest sound drivers from my motherboard manufacturer's site (ASUS) and followed this FAQ: http://support.take2games.com/cgi-bi...hp?p_faqid=632 to enable Stereo Mix recording.
Then I switched the game into windowed mode and exited. Then I undid all the hacks in my original post and now I can play with sound with DX10, but only in windowed mode. Fullscreen DX10 still crashes.

Here's another old thread someone unearthed that had good info about getting the Steam version of BioShock to run if it's freezing at the BioShock logo (or shortly after):

I found that the only thing that would get me past the hanging Bioshock logo was to completely remove the OpenAL drivers. Now everything works perfectly.

Here is a snip from another post it may help.

Anyways, I did *NOT* have to uninstall all SoundMAX drivers. The only thing I uninstalled, under the "Uninstall a program" section of Control Panel, is called specifically "Host OpenAL (ADI)". It's very small and only takes a minute to uninstall (don't remember if a reboot is required after, but it's probably a good idea), and apparently when installed it conflicts with Creative's EAX/OpenAL driver.

Of course, you'll also want to make sure your Creative Driver are up to date, in Game Mode with EAX enabled, etc.

    Good luck!

Just get the add/remove program list up from the control panel and there should be an entry for OpenAL.
