Question Do I HAVE to kill Big Daddies?

I understand this game is supposed to be all about being free to do whatever you like, and that I can probably just roam around avoiding Big Daddies if I wanted to. But what if I want to accomplish the "main storyline" of the game while helping the Little Sisters?

The way I personally enjoy playing all games that give you the freedom to act however you want to act is that I always enjoy playing the archtypical "hero". I like to help out and protect innocents, and set out to give the bad guys what-for. So from what I've seen of this game so far, the Little Sisters are the "innocents" in this scenerio and thus I will probably work to protect and help them survive.

However, in all the developer interviews I've listened to or read, and the demos of the game I've seen, there has been all this emphasis in taking down Big Daddies. Okay, that's great. But aren't Big Daddies supposed to be the protectors of the Little Sisters? If I'm already going to be working to save the Little Sisters, why would I want to touch the Big Daddies? Is there some kind of plot twist where Big Daddies become controlled by Ryan or some other evil collaborator? Or do we find out that the Big Daddies exploit the Little Sisters just as badly as everyone else wants to?

i don't think IG/2k will answer these questions... they could also tell the ending of the game the BD hunting video just showed how hard it is to take one down, but nobody said you had to do it...

I think they've given indications that you could still play the way you intend, Signal. For instance, there are those pheromone plasmids that trick the Big Daddies into thinking you're a Little Sister. If that's in the game than you could interact with the Little Sisters without worry of being attacked by the Big Daddies.

I don't think you'd have to, depending on how you play. They might make it an xbox live achievement to kill a Big Daddy, but I'd imagine if you take the option to rescue the little sisters that would ally you to the BD's (although I could be wrong).

You don't have to kill them as long as you don't harass the Little Sisters they are charged in protecting. If you do attack a Little Sister, the fervor that a Big Daddy will display in trying to end your trivial existence may depend on:

    - The type/size of Big Daddy
    - The weapons/resources he has
    - The amount of damage you dealt to the Little Sister
    - The frequency of your attacks against Little Sister's (Do Big Daddy's remember you? For how long?)
    - Your potential reputation within Rapture (Andrew Ryan could act similar to Xerxes)

We haven't seen any indication or word to the contrary, but I'm banking on some renegade psychopathic Big Daddy's who have no LS charge and are just out to maul you.

You don't need to kill Big Daddies. Just wait for their suit to fill up with ☺☺☺☺ and they'll suffocate. Or wait for them to starve to death - after all how can they eat in those things?

Don't be fooled by appearances. Little sisters scavenge from dead bodies. The closest approximation to them in the animal kingdom are vultures. Since when did anyone think vultures were innocent?

Since when where vultures forced by a psychotic control freak (Andrew Ryan) to harvest a precious commidity from those dead bodies in order to impose some semblence of control on a perfect society turned dystopia? Plus every single part of the "vulture's" enviroment wants to kill them too

from what ive seen the BD's are best left alone, and if used tactically a powerful weapon to be used to our advantage-WHY DESTROY SUCH A POTENT RESOURCE?

    thrill of the hunt.

I'm not saying i'm going to go genocidal on Rapture, but I'll probably at least try to take down one of everything.

For things as potent as the Big Daddy appears to be from all accounts there would definitely be a feeling of pride in taking one down. Depending on repercussions though I may have to reload once I finally manage it.

As in: What if the Big Daddies communicate to each other and now the entire Big Daddy populace wants to hug me...violently.
