Ok many will post here and say "there is no best civ" but I really don't care. Who do you think personally is the best civ in the game.
Japanese, duh!
China (mao is not as sexy as Tokugawa)
Greeks, Alexander FTW
Zulu, Shaka's spear is very, very pointy...
Aztecs, you just can't kill these guys
Romans, Alexander> Ceaser
Americans, Honest Abe
French, Napoleon is awesome
Egyptians, tech beasts

French!!!!!.....
i was going to bed, and i thought, hmm,...the aztecs could be cool to use, their temples produce science, and now i want to try them,
but i think they are easy to use,....
china is, their the cheapest....lol in the whole game,
The Mongols.
Why Alexander> Caesar (oh, and you spelled it wrong btw)? Shouldn't it be the other way around if one chooses the Romans?
Actually I've found them a very interesting civ. To get few free villages at the beginning is a very good plus. one just needs to go soon to Bronze working or buy it from the AI to defend them.
What I can't stand are the Russians and the Greeks. I still have to try the Germans for real, tho.
I'll agree that China can be the cheapest, but they are also the most flexible in my opinion. If I had to name one civ that was overpowered, it'd probably be china. There are effective strats to use against them, but most ppl don't have the focused skills to beat them. I use them most of the time on H2H, and kinda feel ashamed, because I didn't like playing with them on single player, mainly because they don't really take thought and aren't intresting to play with. They can tech and expand with any other civ, while still allowing you to build defenses. If left alone, I never sweat, even without taking an AI capitol.
I've moved into the top 5 on H2H on PSN, using China about 80% of the time. Since most games are against ppl that are playing one of their first games online, I know I could move up to #1 if I just play none stop and rack up points. So I've decided to go with random, and pulled the Indians twice in a row. Won both games pretty easily, but it was waaaay more fun to have to adapt to an inferior civ.
I can use Japan, Greeks, Spanish, Romans, and Russians almost as powerfully as I do with China, but China just affords more flexibility. I'm starting to hate them, eventhough they've brought me many wins.
oh, and HGB, don't start playing with the Aztecs, Seems like they're more used than the Zulus now. Guess ppl like that free warrior at the start. Never had a problem taking out the Aztecs. The sceince bonus from temples isn't so powerful. unless you get the ark, it seems like a waste of hammers early on, and late in the game it's only a slight bonus to libraries. by that time you should be pushing economic victory with their better bonus of %50 gold.
free warrior at the start? did i miss something?
I agree China is boring at times, i had a friend i used to play all the time and he always picked china I tried to beat him using various races it and it as allot of fun. I won about half the games. then when i picked china myself I beat him so bad it wasn't any fun at all.
I've been trying all the different civs lately. I really don't like the zulus, I find that if you don't get a good location start its hard to take over capitals with warriors (withouth getting infil and or a hill).
America and the English are pretty fun in a late game.
