In an interview/postmortem for SS2 Ken said that he thought guns degrading/reaking was really a poor idea. I'd doubt that it would be in Bioshock.
I doubt it, I think you only get one copy of each weapon.
If weapon degradation was much slower than it was in System Shock 2, then that would be cool. The improvised nature of the weapons in Bioshock almost cry out for them to malfunction. Needing to occasionally repair them, would be a cool little addition to the game.
That said, as far as I know, Bioshock does not feature weapon degradation at all. Pity.
Personally, I preferred the anti-entropy Psi power. It, regen, and push/pull were all the psi stuff I got - I never seemed to get enough maintenence tools.
Ken Levine says that he took a long time to decide whether or not weapons should degrade. The final answer is no, they do not degrade.
It wouldn't be fun to have your weapon break, after you have just spent all of your reasources modifying it.
in my opinion i think just the ability to upgrade it is good enough. i mean since they arent degrading if you have the weakest weapon possible you wont make it through the game. thus making you want to upgrade it.
The models of the guns, especially the chemical thrower, grenade launcher and shotgun, have a lot of external nuts, bolts, gauges, pipes, canisters and meters that look like they could be damaged during combat; lest they are reinforced by some miraculous metal.
I'm not for having such a sharp degradation of weapons like in SS2. I could understand the sawed-off shotguns of the Many falling apart quickly, but not the weapons of the UNN or Tri-Optimum.
I'd figure that 22nd century technologists would make firearms last longer and put up with more damage and crap thrown at them. Tri-Op felt like a counterfeit goods conglomerate after witnessing how a couple hundred shots would warp a perfectly good assault rifle into disrepair.
I'm dissapointed degradation is out but I'm sure it will still be a great game.
Maybe I just made smart use of my tools but I NEVER had a problem with weapon degradation in System Shock 2 even on Hard... I thought it added a lot to the game.
I don't mind not having weapon degredation in the vanilla game as someone will eventually mod it.
