When did Ryan find out? (SPOILERS)

So when did Ryan discover that Jasmine Jolene sold his son to Frank Fontaine. Before Fontaine's "death", or after?

In my opinion I think he found out after Fontaine's "death" because he kills Jasmine Jolene but doesn't really mention anything about finding out why Fontaine needs the embryo. Obviously he knew about it when the game begins and starts connecting the dots when Jack arrives.

I'm not quite sure though, I'm sure there's something I've missed.

I'd have to say he knew before Fontaine's "death". And here's why I think that.
I'm sure Ryan tried to keep a finger on the pulse of Rapture. With all the cameras, security and monitoring of radio/television broadcasts, I'm sure he had a fair accessment (or was advised) of what was going on. Especially with those he had a personal interest in. Who's to say he didn't witness Fontaine and Tenenbaum visiting Jasmine, with their plan. She needed the money, perhaps a spike in her bank account, alerted an employee (a spy for Ryan), and they sent word of her increase. I don't think, initially, Ryan suspected that they would use an offspring of his against him. But moreso of just collecting a DNA sample of him, and using it to manipulate parts of Rapture against him, or for Fontaine's gains. And for that, that's when he ordered Fontaine's death. And since Jasmine had taken something intimately from him, he decided to take something from her (her life), in the same intimate manner. Take care of her, personally.

And when exactly did Jolene sell the egg?

Based on Jolene's diary, Ryan would definitely find out. But how? Suchong? F. Futuristic? Tenenbaum?

That creepy Dr. Tenenbaum promised me it wasn't gonna be a real pregnancy, they'd just take the egg out once Mr. Ryan and I had... I needed the money so bad... But I know Mr. Ryan's gonna suss it out, gonna know I wasn't being careful... gonna know I sold the... Mr. Ryan's gonna be so mad at me...

In BS2, Ryan's "Generation" diary, he speaks of Atlas with some dread. As if this individual was someone he couldn't take lightly. Maybe this pinpoints to Ryan finding out after the Kashmir attack? 1959?

This is starting to make little sense. Need to see the big picture. I was under the impression that Jack was sent topside sometime before Fontaine's death, which means Jolene sold the egg sometime in/before 1956 (because Fontaine said Jack was no more than two when he "and the kraut put you in that sub".

But if Ryan never considered a heir till after the New Year of 1959 does this mean he accidentally impregnated Jolene without knowing? Which means he didn't find out until years after she sold the egg?

Ryan didn't find out until a couple of years later. He visits Jasmine Jolene and either

- found out after she let slip to him, making him angry and kill her

- found out from someone else and then went to Jolene to kill her.

It sounds as if he was seeing Jasmine a couple of years before he met Diane.

I think you're right about that... Peach Wilkins said something along the lines of: "we're down here wrenching fish guts, while Ryan's up at Fort Frolic banging fashion models" in one of his diaries. Followed by, "Fontaine's like us, ya' know? Like he's worked a day in his life."

Which means while Fontaine was still alive, Ryan was still having unprotected intercourse with (many) "models".

I guess that settles it: He accidentally impregnated Jolene years back (possibly sometime before/around 1956), then finds out - probably - after New Year's 1959. Jolene sounded so sure that Ryan would find out. Why'd it take him so long?

Ryan didnt end it, she left him after she went to Apollo Square, and joined Atlas. However, he wasnt paying an attention to here (e.g he didnt visit whilst she was in Medical Pavillion) so maybe he was having the affair then

Diane was disfigured in 1959 during the Kashmir attack and Jack arrives in 1960. Ryan had to be sleeping with Jolene before that as Fontaine mentions that he sent to Jack to the surface when he was 2 years old.
