    Deity Tech

I fall behind the tech - always, even though I put up 3 cities for science, and one for gold, build the libraries quickly, etc... Any suggestions?

One thing that can help a lot in Deity is staying at war with the AI. When the AI is at war, it focuses on unit production and gold rather than research.

While you can stay ahead in tech with few cities or with more cities, more cities is usually easier. Building settlers will give you more research than building libraries, and much more later on as your cities grow. Focus on expanding and growing your cities first, then on improving your tech buildings.

If you go with fewer cities, don't neglect your city's food supply. The only way to make a super science city is to increase the population and increase the workable land area with a courthouse.

Also, consider using civilizations that are better at getting technology quickly. Try a civ with bonuses that help your research grow, like the Japanese (water tiles give food), Chinese (cities start bigger), Egyptian (desert tiles give extra trade and food), and Greek (+50% trade from the start of the game).

Also check the Strategy forum here--there are a several threads devoted to winning against the Deity AI.

By the modern era you should aim to be making at least 800 science per turn. Better is over 1000. This isn't all that hard but will be tricky if you only have two or three science focussed cities. I have universities in all my cities. Also try using great scientists to research the tehc that takes the longest to get at the time you receive the gp. I used to always settle them but after reading Morte on the issue i swithced and now i settle some and use others to save turns. 7 or 8 turns saved researching one big tech lets you get 2 or 3 cheap ones. Also, and this is most important...it doesn't matter who has the most tech, just so long as you get to space flight first you are ok. It only takes around 30 techs or so to reach space flight so yu can skip quite a lot of them if you plan ahead.

A good start is when you have your first 100g settler, place him on a coast with 3-4 ocean squares and a fish, and pay for the library if you can pay for two, and race for irrigation (alphabeth, pottery first) to get one more population boost on your science, then bronze working. That way you can get most of the first-research bonuses such as a trading post, a workshop, a marketplace, walls and bonus science.
And a city for science should be producing as much science and food as possible. Make another city for bulding units. A second gold city is also very good. But expand after you have code of laws tech and republic gov.

It is super dangerous not to go for bronze working as your first tech. The ai on deity will punish you for it. I go BW, Alpha (if i think i have time), Pottery, Masonry, Irrigation. - If you are Egyptian you can change this as they get irrigation free in the medieval era. Then go for the quickest to get techs to ensure i get there first. If you wait for COL to expand you wil lose a lot of good city placements. I usually have 5 to 6 cities by the time i have a Republic and then expand a little more with it if i feel like there are still good sites.

It never failed me, but then again I really do this early, maybe to early for the AI to be aggressive or because i play MP mostly. Oh, I didn't mention, but I also use choke points on the map or place a unit very close to the AI capitals, to minimize their interrest for war with me. But yes, you have to let yourself be a little undefended to get a headstart in the first tech bonus race.
