    So if they are..........

So if the citizens of rapture are the best in the world who did they get to do the jobs that they would be over qualified for. Becuase rapture obviously has police men and mechanics, but i thought these people where the most talented best of the best, why would they be doing jobs like that (there is also one who looks like a fisherman). Obviously rapture cant survive without these jobs but i always imagened the citizens as arrogant artists and singers not average joe police men.

And this is ym first post but ive been reading on the forums for months
    You all seem pretty nice

Well thank you for the compliment!

We had a discussion about this a while back. We decided that the city had taken not only the best scientists, but the best fishermen, the best mechanics, the best of everyone. Even the workers have a high IQ, and have been trained to be able to help in almost any field.

Maybe the workers also spend time working in a lab.

Thanks for the good question, keep them comming.

The best of everyone in their rightful profession, as most would assume. I mean doctors don't scrub toilets.

well, someone has to get the short end of the stick, maybe thats part of the reason Rapture collapsed.

    What I mean is:
"Hey, your one of the best and brightest, you want to join a very elite society?"
"Now that your here, you can clean all the toilets."

So maybe that created a whole lot of dissent before the collapse

Yes, but there was a whole section of the city dedicated to entertainment. I'm sure that they kept people from leaving by saying something like

"There is no other place on Earth where you will be treated so well".

    Or killing them...

I totally agree with you your example put what i tried to describe in practically a novel, on tee with only a few world
After all this happens in the real world aswell.

But ive thougth about it and i think it wasnt always like that.
I think the policemen and fishermen are the children of the scientists and artists.

Maybe when rapture was smaller they didnt need police maybe the citizens where trusted by andrew ryan (after all how many philosophers go nto a bar break a newcastle brownbottle and yell "stitch that jimmy!"

It is like Eureka, the TV show on Sci-Fi, where they are the best around, but they still have janitors and mechanics and what not

Firstly thats not really a spoiler imo. There was probably some rule against leaving Rapture, it wasnt a secret that it was secret. So you throw Class Strife, Plasmids, Monoployies, Organized Crime, and other things into a pot and you get a rather nasty civil war.

Ryan must have had some pretty loval people to keep people from leaveing.
And there must be ways out becuase you can get in.
And ryan is mad but not mad enough to trap himself into a huge steel coffin.

Id like to know how ryan and the other fella (his name escapes my mind) actually fought.
Did they just fight each other without uniforms. Or maybe the police was on ryans side but then it would be more a citizens revolt than a civil war.
Or maybe it was more like two sides secretly fighting each other. If it was that then it would be assinations and people being hung from lampposts and poisoned.

There are no police in rapture, only security bots.

We know that many plasmids were invented during the time of the civil war, so it was pretty much a full scale massacre.

You will probably have to play the game and search for audio logs to answer all of you questions.

Well, it was an open war from what I understand, it probably started as a secret thing with death squads and deteriated from there.

Ot, and correct me if Im wrong, but all most every thing that has been redacted was too vague to be a spoiler. "Prof. Plum did it in the bathosphere with the wrench" is a spoiler, "some guy got clubbed" isnt. I dont think speculation, esp. on obscure parts of the plot, counts either.

Ive seen pictures of police splicers There called ducky's look on gamespot there is concept art and in the fisheries he shoots one (plus ive seen lots of screen shots with them in). And in the review which gave 10/10 there are 2 dead policemen in a freezer.

No its definatly a policeman in the actual game the badge on his hat is different i think. But hes just in his rain gear (rain poncho).
Police in the 30-40 looked very similar

why would he be wearing rain gear? why would he even have rain gear at all? I think Waders would be enough. I will have to check out the fisheries video again.

fisheries are very wet i suppose
But i am sure he is a policeman becuase of that hat

  22. #22
So the police have a badge shaped like shell. It is an undersea city after all. Perhaps the rain gear is for patrolling those areas that are a bit leaky and dirty.

I dont know, I think the bots police the fisheries and those are fishers, althought the hat does look very coppish, but why use a shell on the hat, I think its an oyster, I think it makes more sense if it were a companys logo.

Those pictures are a little out dated... it is highly likely that the character in question never made it into the final version of the game.

If you look at police badges around the country you'll see they are of different shapes. For example New Jersey's are a triangle. Here is a site if you're interested that makes badges: http://www.blackinton.com/home/default.aspx

The point being that a badge doesn't have to be a star or shield in shape.

There have been rumors of orginized crime in the fisheries area...

I can't remember where I found that tasty bit of info, but I could swear that it is true.

Only in BioShock, will you be eager to go to a place where people clean fish.

That would explain some of the screenies we've seen. The question is what were they were smuggling ?

Da Bubs - That makes sense, I think that's a good theory.

If I can just put in my 2 cents about the whole "why are there toilet cleaners in Rapture", maybe when it started and there weren't too many people, they all did shifts, like "Aw, it's Monday, time for me to clean out the lavs." The brilliant scientists wouldn't like that, but it be offset by the fact that they can really do whatever they want in Rapture, where they are not "bound by petty morality."

Then, when Rapture really started growing, maybe you had to sort of earn your way in: when you started, you had to clean toilets in shifts (as demonstrated above), so you'd have the benefit of the city and society but would have to do a little icky work now and then. And as you became a more and more integrated Rapturian, you'd clean toilets less and less - like, maybe you'd be "conscripted" into toilet cleaning for the first three years of your stay, but after that you don't have to?

Wow, BioShock must be the only game that's ever made me speculate about toilet cleaning...

same here toilet cleaning is so interesting now.

I imagine that the organised crime was smuggleing adam to our world, that would explain the things written on corpses like "gene traitor" and my personal favorite "smuggler".

Obviously adam addicted maniacs didnt like this so they hunted them down.

Makes me think that maybe the gang members didnt use adam on themselves, becuase if they did i dont think they would try and smuggle it out for money. So maybe at some point in the fisheries you can enter an area that is relatively safe and splicer free becuase it is run by the gang.

Maybe a dev could shed some light on the policemen
