Thread: People canceling preorders after PS3 demo

Exclamation People canceling preorders after PS3 demo

You don't have to look far on the Internet to see the gaming community growing very worried about the PS3 version of Bioshock. If you follow the link you'll see many people are already canceling their preorders. And it's not hard to tell why -- the demo is plagued with problems:

    • The game runs at sub-720p, but forces itself to display at 1080p instead of defaulting to the game's optimal resolution like other 720p games. Thus you have to manually change it to 720p in the Display Settings or you'll get nasty white bars on the bottom and right side of the screen during cutscenes, which ruins the immersion factor of, say, the underwater cutscene at the beginning. And frequently during play, traces of this white garbage will appear and linger on the outskirts of the screen until you pause the game. Terrible.
    • Many textures are a pixelated mess. Look at the dead Big Daddy up close; the textures are big, blocky pixels, like something out of a PS1 game. Or try pushing in the right analog stick (R3) to zoom behind the pistol, and look at the blocky mess of pixels on the barrel of the gun. Look at most walls. It hurts the eyes and in the case of the Big Daddy it hurts the heart. How could this happen to such an iconic character?
    • The framerate jitters along, especially during the submarine sequence. Look at the windows on the hive towers of Rapture as the bathysphere makes its descent; look at the stop-motion animation of the squid as it darts by; this lack of smoothness is distracting and steals the scene's power.

Now, people can say it's only a demo. But what does that MEAN? What we need to hear is the developers say the retail version does not have these problems. I hope this demo is an old build and the final build is better; I bought a PS3 for Blu-ray and Bioshock and I'll be sorely disappointed if four developers and a year of extra time couldn't deliver a polished port of one of their most important IPs. With a sequel and a movie on the horizon, this isn't the time to start sacrificing quality.

So, Elizabeth and the people of 2K Games: What's the deal? Is the retail version better? What concerns me is the fact the final game has already gone gold (meaning, it's DONE), and this was announced around the same time as the demo.

If the developers can assure us the final game will be good, I will gladly spread the word and lay the fears of NeoGAF and other gaming communities to rest. They're the people canceling the preorders; others will follow. 2K needs to act fast.

would encourage you to check out the ps3 videos on ign. I was really bummed with the demo too however I think it's because the demo uses alpha code (hopefully). The videos on ign look great and back up there previews of the ps3 version looking good.

That's a good suggestion. Unfortunately, I don't have IGN Insider and so I cannot view their movies in the proper resolution. I think they have a video of a Big Daddy, though. It would be interesting to compare how the Big Daddy in the IGN videos looks compared to the Big Daddy in the demo, to see if it's still a pixelated mess. I'd also need to know whether they were playing the build on an actual PS3 and not a development unit as is often the case with preview builds.

At any rate, the simplest solution would be for 2K (they do listen to the fans, right?) to step in and answer the question: Is the demo an older build? Will the retail version look more polished than the demo?

If the demo is simply unpolished, I don't get why they released it in the first place. Why represent your game so poorly? It's caused nothing but trouble on the Net. They should've known this was going to happen, unless the actual game is just as bad and in that case they had no choice.

While I think it wouldn't be a bad idea for 2k to address some of these concerns, it should be noted that Neogaf is notorious for comically overreacting over the most minor of things. There is a running joke that damn near every game that has ever been released will have people on there complaining about frame rate issues or screen tearing or aliasing or some other completely minor issue that is invisible to the rest of the human race. So that the fact that some of the system warriors and fanboys over there are cancelling preorders over these perceived problems should not necessarily cause excessive alarm on the developers part. Especially when the professional sources are reporting no such problems.

I think the mainstream PS3 user who doesn't necessarily read Neogaf (or even this forum) are going to be wowed by Bioshock's obvious strengths and an incredibly strong demo that is in my opinion the greatest videogame demo ever made.

I understand what you're saying, but I think it'll be difficult for even the less-discerning gamer to dismiss the demo's technical shortcomings when they see direct-feed footage of it (which I have no doubt people at NeoGAF are recording right now). I don't consider myself a person obsessed with graphics -- in fact, up until last month I had been a Wii-only gamer -- but some of the demo's graphical blemishes (like the Big Daddy that looks so pixelated it's practically a sprite) are so glaring that they're ruining the experience.

Really, the best course of action right now would be for 2K to talk before this whole situation balloons out of proportion.

Frank: I'll have to look at those videos later. The YouTube ones are useless because they're already at a poor resolution, but it looks like there are some high-def ones in there. Thanks.

At any rate, it's great that 2K is going to comment on the whole situation. Hopefully they'll clear up why the demo doesn't look so hot. I've already alerted NeoGAF to this thread so that they can see 2K's response as well. I'm sure there's a simple explanation, like the demo is an older build.

    Hey guys,

First, I want to thank you for the acute attention to detail and the Spartan level of expectation our most devoted BioShock fans hold us to, and how excited you are and attentive to the BioShock PS3 demo. When we saw a post asking about issues found in the demo, we jumped on it immediately. And you know what, you're right. The texture in the PS3 demo of the downed Big Daddy does not match our level of quality either. This slipped by. We admit it. However, I want to assure you that this is an exception, and not a rule, and while I regret this oversight, we put a lot of love into making this game look amazing for the PS3 and I'm sure that when you play the rest of the demo you will agree that the textures are not all like this one instance.

As for the other issues and concerns, we are currently diligently working to replicate any bugs, and will report back to you with what we find. Thank you for your vigilance here and moving forward.

As I just said, we're going to be looking into replicating and seeing what we can do about a lot of stuff you guys have posted about. However, I saw one helpful post over at neogaf that you might want to try out in the meantime. I haven't tried this myself, but anything you guys find that I can point out to help, I will!

And please, if you find any other issues or fixes, please message me and I'll look into them right away.

"Well, I know for sure how to fix the problem with the white bars appearing at the top and bottom of the screen. From the main menu of the PS3, go to Settings, then Display Settings, then select Custom, then uncheck 1080i and 1080p, so that only 720p (and the unselectable 480p) is checked. Then boot up the game. Right off the bat you'll notice an increase in sharpness, with the black levels on the ESRB rating looking richer and the first 2K logo playing smoothly. Continue onto the game and you'll enjoy everything WITHOUT white bars. I just tested this myself and I'm astounded that it actually works."

First off Frank, good stuff with the movies. I think if you look closely you can really see the difference in texture quality compared to the demo. Second, I run on a 1080p set and had no problems with white borders or framerate. My issue was with the texture quality and washed out picture. Either way I hope to hear more soon.

I didn't even noticed the white bars 0.o probably because my tv is always set for 720p max since it's not a huge tv and 720p is great, better then 1080i and that's has far as my Tv goes.
I'm not the graphics maniac and had played the demo and loved every second of it,never tought that would be those low textures there.I'm really thankfull to be able to finally play Bioshock,at first I didn't believe the textures were like that so I went to my 2nd run on the demo and indeed I saw it in detail, the big daddy textures are worse then other versions pictures shown and also if you press r3 with the pistol equiped you can see some of them spritelike texture on the gun too, nothing major but I would really like the experience to be at least 360 equal cause I do know Ps3 can pull it off and specially You guys can pull it off.
2k Liz thanks for being in contact always with the community and all other mods and 2k guys,I'm new here but this is so far the best forum contactwise with the team I've ever been. You guys rock and once more,Thank YOu for bringing us Bioshock too <3

I agree with you. Its not a dealbreaker for anyone unless you already own another version like i do. I am convinced though that looking at other videos on ign, gamespot, and gametrailers that the textures in their videos look stellar.

2K Liz does the demo use the final code of the game?

Also would the blu-ray version be different quality wise because of the medium and the mandatory install?

Amazing work Liz, thanks for commenting on the issue. I have mentioned previously that I think they are way overblown but it's great to see you guys getting on top of any bugs that may exist.

Ironically, what you quoted from NeoGAF was written by me. And I pointed out the same solution here in the opening post. At any rate, the 720p trick doesn't change the fact that we shouldn't have to manually change the system settings everytime we play the game. Every other PS3 game I've ever played changed the settings itself upon booting up. Why should the player have to go through the trouble everytime they want to play Bioshock?

And you mentioned that 2K overlooked the bad texture on the downed Big Daddy. Problem is, the texture is that bad on EVERY appearance by the Big Daddy in the demo. One of the worst offenders is after you've passed out from the first plasmid and you're ebbing in and out of consciousness; when the Big Daddy steps onscreen and is looking down at you, he's a muddled mess of washed-out pixels. It's so bad that the diving suit almost looks furry, not smooth and iron-clad.

And when you say you're looking for problems to replicate, what do you mean? Are you guys going to patch the game or something? And is the demo the same code as the final retail build? Will the textures on the Big Daddies and other problems in the demo be just as bad in the retail version? Will anything be done to fix it?

I think the code issue is what needs clarification the most. Are the people previewing the game at IGN and 1Up using the same code as was used in the demo? Or is the demo based on old, outdated code, and if so has the code since been improved for the retail release, resulting in better visuals than the demo? That's what numerous people here and elsewhere keep asking, and that's what we need to know.

This is the answer I am looking for too. Going through the demo again their are numerous texture issues. The most obvious I found are the bid daddies, red carpet, weapons, trash cans etc. These may seem like nit-picky things and I am sorry if it feels that way but I simply wont spend another $60 on a great game that becomes a so-so game because of technical issues that shouldnt exist.

    Lol!

Once again trying to "replicate" obvious bugs and/or flaws.
Sounds like the Civ: Rev fiasco all over again, which still hasn't been resolved.

Seems to me that 2k have some major QA issues to deal with.

I will make sure to really do my homework before buying this - or any other 2k game again.

I was holding out for the ps3 version for the convenience of playing it from my comfy sofa and I still hope that Bioshock will come out fine.

However, after paying premium for Civ: Rev and ending up with a broken product, the phrase - trying to replicate bugs, really gets me concerned (we got that a lot in the Civ forum before 2k acknowledged there even was an issue).

These seem to be valid points and if it is represented in the final version, I may have to stick with the 360 version of the game. I was really excited to play the new add-on however not as excited if they are somewhat buggy and bad quality. I love Bioshock and do have confidence that 2k will do right by us.

2k liz is there anyway the 2K team can let us have custom controls because I got confused when I used weapons and Plasmids, I thought R1 was to shoot and L1 was to use plasmids and I do prefer using the R1,L1 in FPS not the triggers please tell the team if they can at least look into it!

Are these issues only with the demo build, or is it in the game's final build as well? Also, if it is in the final code, would you be able to fix the issues (frame rate, textures) if it has already gone gold?

Yeah, if the developers are detecting these issues in the game now that it's gone gold, they should start working on a patch immediately. I don't know what the turnaround is on these things, but maybe they could have a patch ready at or around launch, if it's necessary in the first place.

I was going to buy this game Day One, but now I'll wait and see if the retail build is better... What I read in reviews will be key to my purchasing decision. OR, Liz could just tell us if the retail build will be better, hint hint. Again: is the demo an old build? Is the final build updated code?

2K should be giving its team the time necessary to optimize the game. They're reaching for another third of console gamers but they're only going to end up alienating that third if Big Daddies look fuzzy and white bars appear on the screens of less tech-savvy people who don't know the 720p trick (and really, why should they be expected to?). This port has to do the game justice.

So, Liz, is the final version going to have actual 1080p? I myself am going to get really fed up with having to change the system's resolution.

I noticed a few texture errors through 2 playthroughs of the demo, is it something that need to be fixed? Definitely. It is something you need to cancel a preorder over? Hell no. 2k Elizabeth has stated on this thread that they missed it and are already working on it. They LIKE feedback on things they release so they can figure out if it is good or bad, or needs some tweaking in the technical department. I believe this will be a great port, the visuals were gorgeous, every effect was amazing and theyre were no framerate issues at all. Dont jump the gun if the bullet hasnt even hit you.

Hi i want to clarify that the texture problem it's not only for the downed big daddy, you can see the same texture on the big daddy with the little sister after you gain the first plasmid. Or in the kitchen (all the texture in the kitchen is very very horrible to see).
But we want to know, is the problem related only for the demo or is present on the final game?

Is it confirmed to be sub-720? The shots were full 720 and I think its looks full scale as well. Maybe I'm missing something.

Textures (with the exception on the Big Daddy) were very nice, just as nice as other versions, even a year later.

Framerate was fine but I was more surprised that the slowdown didn't really happen during heavy combat, more so just walking around.

I really think things are getting a bit harsh, ya its not quite what was expected but it is clear 2k shares our concerns so I wouldn't worry. Even if it requires a patch (which I would expect sine I think the game has gone gold) I'm sure they will fix any issues, there are some developers who don't bother patching but 2k was quick to address the cropping windscreen issue last year so I'm not giving up.

I don't have a pre-order anyway but I though I'd post. I try to stay away from heated Neogaf since it can get ridiculous.

Thanks for the responses 2K Elizabeth, here is to hoping no issues are too difficult to address.

I agree with Neiteio, this game deserves a better treatment... i was waiting this game since was announced on PS3, and already placed a preorder, but now i'm seriously considering to delete it. what made me change my mind? first the inconsistent framerate and some terrible textures.

IMO this month we are not facing games shortage and should be nice if the devs would be allowed for an extra time for a general polish.

Umm the framerate was preatty solid, and for the most part the textures were good except a few here and there. But if you have played Bioshock before and you really think this is a big issue for you then cancel your pre-order (I seriously don't know why people put pre-orders for this game, it's not like it's gonna sell out). But PLEASE if you haven't then set that all aside! The incredible story, and plot twist make up for all that. This game will be the best game you will play in a VERY long time. Just don't let somthing like bad textures stop you from playing this AMAZING game...//

That's the thing, though. It's a great game, and so those of us with only a PS3 want to experience it at its best. Otherwise we're left thinking, "Wow, that was great... But I wonder how much better it would've been on system X." It's very disheartening. I hope this clarifies our viewpoint.

At any rate, the 360 received a patch at some point after launch that (if I recall correctly) added the ability to disable the FOV and vita-chambers, among other things. I'm hoping that if the demo build is indeed the same code as the final build, that 2K will then make a patch that smooths out the framerate, causes the game to default to its optimal resolution automatically, and improves the texturework throughout. Oh, and in an ideal world they'd add alternate control options with Fire on R1/L1. I'm fine with R2/L2, but many people hate the controls the way they are now.

IMO this month we are not facing games shortage and should be nice if the devs would be allowed for an extra time for a general polish.
I think it was a game to be taken immediately, but now I'm changing idea too, but you look at those textures? are horrible, now I understand that some say that the game deserves to be annoying but not a little lower than the version with COMPETITION be 14 months late.Hours do the same question that made some, the demo belongs to an old build it or not?

What I'm most curious about is why weren't these problems mentioned by press outlets like IGN when they previewed the game? The previews say the game looks just as good as the 360 version, but clearly that's not the case with the demo. I know that IGN especially would've called foul on artifacting and framerate stutters and low-res textures, but they claimed the game looked even better.

These clues make me think (read: hope) that the press might have a different build of the game, an improved retail one that's better than the demo. But until Liz gets back to us, we won't know for sure. The fact the demo's official announcement coincided with the game going gold certainly makes the prospect of it being a different build look dim... But if that were the case, I wonder why nobody in the press noticed.

This post has all the questions I want answering. If i'm getting a sub standard port then I am cancelling my pre-order. I've had this pre-ordered since day 1 but I am not paying for poor textures that you may have overlooked.

And before anyone tells me it shouldn't matter as BioShock is so good, bog off. Yes I don't want to miss out on the experience but it looks awful in places compared to my house mates 360 version and he is not even running his via HDMI!

If we don't get confirmation this is going to be addressed within 7 days I am cancelling. *hopes this gets patched*

But PLEASE if you haven't then set that all aside! The incredible story, and plot twist make up for all that. This game will be the best game you will play in a VERY long time. Just don't let somthing like bad textures stop you from playing this AMAZING game...//

you were right if that would have happened 2 months ago..but now in october we have tons of beautiful games to care of : LBP, R2, MS2, dead space, FALLOUT3....and dont forget Killzone2 Beta (thanks sony to take me part of the betatrial program); and i should take less care for a ****py port and, at most, consider to buy it later on ebay... but i repeat that it's a pity if this port havnt got the accuracy it deserved!

Liz, a person who works at 2K, said she'll get back to us on this, and I trust her. I'd just like to know how long it'll take her to respond, because she never said (but then, we never asked). I'd also like to know exactly what "looking into" entails. There's no need for them to try to reproduce the circumstances under which the problem occured so that they can see it themselves, because the problems are self-evident. Hopefully she's talking to the devs. I'm guessing she's a public relations representative and we won't get our answers until business hours Monday.

Until then, we can compile demo problems in this thread so that the developers have a good database to draw from when addressing the problem (that is, if it NEEDS to be addressed -- I'm still hoping the retail build is different code altogether). It should be helpful since apparently they weren't even aware of the Big Daddy texture before.

Okay come on, if all major outlets like IGN, PSN, OPM preview'd it multiple times and didn't mention no frame-rate problems and better looking visuals than the 360 then you know most likley the demo was an old build. Besides if bioshock was just out again this year it'd proabley win GOTY against those games as well. I mean bad-framerate doesn't take away the beautiful rag-time music, or violin music in this game, or the amazing voice-acting, and dioulage. Or the creepyness that lurks around every corner, nor does it take away how your heart drops when you find out the plot-twist. It doesn't take away the hard moral decisions of killing or saving a little sister, and sure doesn't take away the fun you will have in this game. Again more than likely the demo was an old build (I mean look at the IGN vids. for proof), but don't be so narrow-minded on your descion...//
