If you could make one game....

    Ok heres the scenario:

You are the creative director of a game developer and you have a team of artists and programmers at you disposal. Lets assume you have a large budget to work with and no constraints from a publisher, you can literally do whatever you want.

So what would you create and why? Be specific.

No offence but what you are asking requires alot of thinking and most people don't like to think if they're not at school.

    Zombies.

You would be a survivalist in a post-apocaliptic world. For a time, the military battled the zombies, but zombies won out.

Anyways, like I said, you are a survivalist. You go about the world doing odd jobs (settling scores, saving loved ones, clearing out buildings, grabbing gear) for anyone you can help. You slowly gather reputation and people start joining you. You eventually get a team of people with different skill sets and such (all of which can get killed off, creating a zombie). You can customize all of your weapons and armor with anything that you find lying around. It would take place in an urban area.
Your overall goal is to clear out the city... but you have to do it in a certain way... or something...

The AI would be fun. Your team mates would all have inventories, weapons, clothes, would be better in certain fields...
The zombies would be Max Brooks like, and a little 28 Days Later like...

Sort of a combination of Left 4 Dead, Stalker, and Fallout 3 (with Halo like driving). Only better.
More of a FPS than an RPG, (like Stalker).

It could be a good movie too.

yeah, it sounds like a good game to be honest, and smart move on pre-planning the making of a video game, you just don't know when or where a full team of video-game developers will ask you to make a video game.

Well, it sort of ties in with my want to be the prop/set dresser on post-apocaliptic movies. I don't quite know how it ties in... BUT IT DOES!

    Hey, I can dream right?

Well, since nobody else is using this thread, and I'm just sitting in my desk chair hunched over eating peaches and blueberries while rocking a wastepaper basket back and forth... I'll say some stuff.

I said in an earlier post that I wish I was John Loche. That should explain a lot about me. However... a certain moderator deleated it!

I don't want the world to end, I just wan't to know a word where every thing was analog, and the person who knew how to throw a knife was powerfull. I really pay attention to detail, and I think I would be great working on large budget post-apocaliptic films. I know how to do great makeup effects (I made my friend into zombie once, looked just like someone out of 28 Weeks Later). I also know what would look right and wrong. I know how to make a standard hollywood brick wall look like hell happened to it. I know what somebody would grab when they raided a house and looked for weapons... or rather what they should grab.

Anyways, that was really random. But I felt like writing it.

What game would you make Mr. Bubblez?

I'd rather be one of the texture artists than designer or whatever. Making textures is fun.

If I could make just one game, it would be a game I've wanted to do forever, but being completely lazy and unmotivated I know I'll never make it happen.

The idea was born when I first saw the The Grand List of RPG Cliches. I set out to come up with a concept for an RPG that defied every single one.

Didn't get very far - turns out, some of those are kind of necessary - but it was a nice launch point. Specifically, one of the cliches - that the heroes must always be so very very young - kind of sent me off on a "Space Cowboys with Swords" tangent. An RPG about retirement home heroes. It would be a spoof of RPG's in general, attempting to defy or at least mock every done-to-death aspect of most RPG's.

The battle system would be a loving homa-... Ok, a blatant ripoff of Nippon Ichi's newer games, where you get to custom build your own SRPG army. The difference is, I don't want the usual "Warrior, Mage, Thief" classes. The main characters of the story would all be mockeries of conventional character classes, but the units you make for yourself would be completely off the wall. Things like:

-- Lawyers (from eight different areas of the law), each with special skills for suing and prosecuting enemies who commit crimes.
-- Referees you deploy on the field to enforce the rules of their sport - for example, if you entered a map and there were 10,000 enemies on screen, deploy a football referee and he'll hit the enemy with a "too many players on the field" penalty. Or if they land a critical hit while you've got a football ref out, he'll flag them for "unnecessary roughness".
-- Trend ☺☺☺☺☺s. Units who do absolutely nothing until a Celebrity unit enters the battle, at which point all Trend ☺☺☺☺☺s on the field immediately adopt a set of pseudo-skills that mimic the Celeb's (and as a friend pointed out, it would be awesome if it was an emo Celeb, as all the Trend ☺☺☺☺☺s would start damaging themselves).

Stuff like that. What's more, I'd attempt to balance all the unit types (hopefully there would be dozens and dozens, if not hundreds) to play like a CCG. In Magic: The Gathering, there is no one best unit or best deck. Some people play Vampire decks, some people play Sliver decks, some people play Angel decks, Rat decks, Artifact decks, Rainbow Decks, etc. I'd want the units to be so balanced that people create their own special setups - one guy might have an army made entirely of Lawyers, all specialized in different areas, someone else might make an army of all the various Law Enforcement units (or Criminal class units), etc.

Also "inspired" by Nippon Ichi would be the extra systems in place for added character progression. Where NI used things like the Dark Senate and Item Worlds, I'd have a Heaven/Hell system. When support characters die, how good/evil they were in life is tallied up. If they were kinda meh in either direction, they'd just chill in Heaven and Hell, maybe offer advice or dig up an item for you every now and then. If they were EXTREMELY good or evil, they could become Saints (or anti-Saints, for evil), who could then (depending on their class and skills when they died) learn new uber-skills, and could be summoned by Priests during battle (and eventually earn themselves a Resurrection - the equivalent of rerolling characters in NI games while retaining their uber-stats).

Another thing, if possible, would be total environmental interactivity, especially in regards to magic. If you've got enemies standing in the grass, you can cast fire at one of them to burn him a bit, or cast fire at the grass to create a Flash Fire that torches everyone nearby. If an enemy is standing some water, cast Ice at the water to freeze him in place. If an enemy is standing on a slope, cast Water at the ground beneath him to turn it into a mudslide. Status magic would work too - if you're getting destroyed, cast Cure at a pond and herd your party into the water to have them all start healing. Or if there's a river between you and the enemy, cast Poison at the water - any enemy who tries to cross the river gets tainted. This would work hand in hand with physical alteration of terrain - cast Stone on a tree, then pick it up and chuck it at an enemy. Hide a character who's near death inside a hollowed out log, then cast Float on the log to make it fly out of reach of enemies. All sorts of crazy combinations.

And the last overly ambitious aspect that probably would never see the light of day - the game world would operate on a 365 day a year calendar, in real-time, just like Animal Crossing. There would be night and day, seasonal changes, weather changes, Holidays and annual events, so even when you beat the story there would always be new stuff to see and do every day.

Man, if only I didn't completely suck at all possible aspects of game design. Then maybe I could get this thing made.

^^^now that my friends is what i call a reply

i have many ideas for games. there is only a very small chance that i would ever pursue those ideas. i can program but thats not enough these days. so i guess it doesnt matter what my ideas are unless i actually pursue them in real life...

its still interesting to hear the ideas of others.

Give me a day or two, and I'll post a good response.
I sure would like more post-apocolyptic world games, though. Those give me a sad feeling, like Gears' "destroyed beauty".

goddamnit! wolfy you took PRACTICALLY all of the wors out of my mouth. i have a couple of ambitious works i wouldnt mind creating but sadly will never happen. most of which are in-depth realisitic type games or rpg style games. like wolfy, my idea is a zombie game, and if i ever had the chance to work with capcom, id want to have them make a breakoff game of resident evil the way i think it should be done.

of course this game would be a free-roaming version of resident evil taking place in a fullscale, fully interactive raccoon city where every building, every everything basically could be used in someway. you would just be a random character who would gain equipment, be able to upgrade said equipment DRASTICALLY and ild the essential skills, such as marksmanship, strength (to move objects to make barricades) stamina (running and etc.) and so on. id also integrate a dual wielding, dual trigger system, which allows you to wield any two weapons at the same time to a limit (its decently realistic so no dual pump action shotguns or anything) such as a katana and hand gun, two combat knives, two katanas, dual handguns, uzi and machete, etc. etc. which means of course theres be upgrades of sort you could do with blades and thered be a skill with that of course.

and zombies. . . . oh ho ho the zombies. many many zombies so thered be a sound system in it, you know youd have to be sneaky and quiet to keep from getting a buttload from attracting to you. like if u use a handgun without first getting a silencer, your going to attract zombies so u can use that melee weapon you just picked up five minutes ago such as the crowbar and end it silently or if u want a fight and want to find sum loot and think you got the firepower and resources and skill, then you just shoot it and hold up and prepare for a fight. of course with the extreme amount of emphasis on large amounts of different weapons wed have varrying bullet hole sizes and wounds and i would want to make the most amazing dismemberment system made for this game. body parts flying everywhere and say u had a .44 magnum, that baby aint leavin a black hole on that zombie your gonna be seein right through that hole and that zombies gettin put on its back

i wont go into more detail cuz thatd take forever lol but its be like a zombie oblivion in terms of freedom and of course youd have quests and such from random survivors to do stuff, sum rpg elements, but i think thatd be about it, because itd all be urban and my ambition would be to make every building enterable and deep and whatnot.

Hmm Ive always been interested in alternate timelines so, Id make a game where WWI happened entirely differently and Hitler never rose to power. In the game Germany and America would have become allied durring WWI. However the United States arrived too late to halt the German defeat. After the war Britan basically just pulled out and left Germany to rebuild, but the U.S. stepped up to help them in the rebuilding.
Once the reconstruction was complete America and Germany had once again become allies agreeing to defend the other nation should they be attacked. Basically it will be almost like a mixture of CoD and battlefield. Sorry but I have stuff to do so, ill right more later.

It would be a first person shooter drawing inspiration from games like Half Life 2 and BioShock.

I would put in user content like what is in Halo for the PC Custom Edition.

Like in Half Life and Stephen King, I would try to put ordinary people in exrodinary events.

I would use my own idea to remake the modern physics engine. I dunno if this has ever been thought of before, but what I see in games today are the 'ragdoll' effects are kinda dumb looking I think. It would be better if they made effects having to do with mass and weight, so when Master Chief dies he doesn't look he's hollow and filled with helium.

This could be done by programming weight into individual items such as limbs. I thought through everything you'd have to do to acheive realistical weight effects, but I'm not gonna spend that time writing it all down.

Like BioShock I would look for ways to make the game seem fully explorable. Making it feel like the player has done all he or she can do.

I'm at a bit of a writers block so I'm gonna stop here.

I've always wanted to make a hyper-realistic FPS where every object and every person in the game reacts to bullets exactly like they would in real life. Enemies would go down in a few hits, not always killed, but at least down, and any piece of the enviroment can be effected. Not much work on the story

My other idea was a free roaming survival-horror game where you start out in a safehouse with limited supplies and you need to roam around the city to find things you can use. The city would be kind of like the begining of 28 weeks later, where there aren't hoardes of undead roaming the streets making it almost impossible to move, but where the city is worryinly empty and still, and you can see zomies dash from building to building out of the corner of your eye, planning an attack. They would not be your typical mindless slow moving zombies that slowly limp towards you, begging for a bullet to the face, they would be cunning and fast. Zombies themselves wouldn't be the only problem, though. Other survivors know that anybody has the potential to become one, so they may attack you as well. As you look through the city you will be searching for food, water, survivors (that won't try to kill you) news, help, and weapons. Weapons are mainly blunt object that you find scattered around the city with different speed, power, and block values (think of Condemned: Criminal Origins, for those of you who played that). Sometimes you will find other melee weapons that aren't blunt, mostly gardening tools, and if you are really lucky (or a really thorough searcher) a firearm with a couple of bullets left in it. Weapons can be modified (think Bioshock, for those of you have heard of that game ) to be faster and more powerful. Your main objective is to find a way out, or to kill off all the zombies (I'll probably do something like Dead Rising and pick a town or city and find it's population and make that number the number of zombies/survivors there are).

Those are my ideas, I hope they don't suck

well that depends. i guess realistically none of us would end up shipping a game on the current consoles, unless you were already in the industry or very close to having your first break.

The idea I keep hearing from you guys is basically this:

GTA with zombies instead of people.

...which sounds like a pretty sweet game that would definitely be possible on current gen hardware.

The bad thing about the First Person Shooter genre is that it's nigh impossible to create completley orriginal games. Mostly because there are only three main areas of the genre

    Reaistic Shooter:
This would mostly entail of war based video games. Usually placed in WWII times or present day Iraq or alternate reality military games such as GRAW 2 where you are fighting some where in Mexico I belive, when obviously there is no such war there... or is there?

    Science Fiction Shooter:
Far more common suprisingly because this provides more orriginal story line than Realistic Shooter. While usually more exciting, and having further story lines. This sub-genre usually doesn't deviate beyond government/science experiments gone wrong, aliens, and some types of zombies.

    Supernatural Shooter:
The last of the three sub genres is the least played, but rising. Games that fall under this catagory are Clive Barker's Jericho, The Darkness, and games related to magic and faith. Common enemies of this genre tend to be demons, magical 'Lord of the Ring' type animals, and once again, zombies.

Trying to come up with a new subgenre of First Person Shooting games would be something I'd like to try

An MMOFPS/RPG version of Civilization that begins at the dawn of man and continues on through modern time and beyond. It's up to the players to band together to progress technology.

Basically a recreated version of Earth with the landmasses cut up and redistributed. That way when it comes to the Age of Discovery, for example, you don't exactly know that there is indeed a Northwest Passage to traverse. Exploration would actually play an integral role.

Player created communities/countries would be plausible, and the winner would be either the first one to dominate the world via military or diplomacy.

While the game is ongoing, the team would be creating another handcrafted version of earth that would be ready to go once someone is declared a winner of the first game, which I imagine would take quite a while.

Lots of zombie game ideas, which is awesome. I may have hated PD0, but the Infection multiplayer mode was an absolute blast - something inspired by that, but on a city-wide scale, would rule so unbelievably hard.

my second idea has always been an EXTREMELY realistic and when i say extremely im talkin down to the nit and picky stuff of an old feudal japan sword fighting game. basically itd be like a life sim except old japan and you are a samurai. you go about on your daily lives and you can take on tasks or listen to other peoples stories and choose to help them if they have a problem. of course this would also be first-person and it would prolly be very complicated and reflex induced due to the fact that when i say realistic i mean it. one or two swipes from a sword and your down. if u have one arm lopped off and survive, you go the rest of the game with one arm etc. etc. i also think it could be VERY rewarding to master such a system and i think it could give quite a sense of accomplishment. thered have to be an extreme degree of sword control and blocking control and it might be a resident evil 4 custscene style of blocking where itd have a small window where you have to press a button to block or sumthing like this. and of course with it being like a life sim youd have to train physically in order to do things more acribatic or strength induced and eat meals to maintain said life and of course thered be the whole family aspect if u wanted or your guy could end up the wandering swordsman. ya never know. this wouldnt be a largescale hit obviously, itd be more of a cult-classic like psychonauts or sumthin

I already have it planned out. It would follow Bram Stroker but with a twist, at the end, Harker and his crew were held up by bandits and could not kill the count, and he lived into the night and had Harker's wife kill Van Helsing and the others. Then the count would go into hiding for many, many years. Until a man named Adolf Hitler heard of a Vampire Lord, and wanted to have the side of the vampire lord along with his. Hitler sends his troops on another supernatural goose chase until they find him deep in the African Rainforest, the cheif of a tribe of Vampires. Dracula views a cooperation with Hitler would provide a means to conquer the world for vampires, so he would agree. The Vatican would eventually find out from Benito Mussolini and the would implore him to stop Hitler and the prince of Night for the sake of goodness. Thus, a new civil war would break out in 1943, between Italy and Germany. But Dracula would fleed to the third Axis, and convince the emperor of Japan that he could give him all the power he needs to conquer the world. Pearl Harbor never happened, instead in a midnight raid, the entire population of Portland were converted to vampires. The plague spreads like a wild fire until one scientist invented (and somewhat discovered) a mold that produced a light the intensity of the sun, and reproduced at an emminse speed. With this mold a wall was built to split the united sates in half, and protect Latin and southern America. Winston Churchill and Joseph Stalin would build their own fence, called the Diamond to prevent vamprism spreading from Asia and Africa (where Dracula originally started this world conquering scheme).
And that's just the tip of the iceberg.

I have this awesome story idea, but I want to use it in a novel, not a video game... It would make a good game... Grrr I'll just not post it... I kind of want to. kind of don't.

Oh well, trust me, it's a cool story.

For me it would definately be a Stargate themed RTS, i love stargate and i love RTS so they go hand in hand like heinz and baked beans.

Sort of a scenario where you instead of being constraned to one map you instead have a solar system, with each person starting off on a home planet which has resources to start you off and such, a stargate, old ruins where thing like ancient tech can be found and such as well as native around you (eg: Nox or Tollan) and you can trade with them and buy tech sorta like in AOE III (depending on who you are and what you do)

the key to exploring other planets is to either create a fleet giving you orbital control and defences like space stations and ground based defences and after that you have to research hyperdrives and such to explore other planets onlt when in hyperspace it isnt simply a matter of zip and your done it actually takes time to get there depending on the distance. or you can use the gate but to get the code for the next planet you have to conduct research or maybe discover it in a ruin, and you then have gate acess for your troops and such but to get an enemy homeworld gate address you have to do both research and find a ruin on one of the planets close to the enemy home, but to make sure everyone dosent just skip this for a fleet ill make the fleets expensive and hyperdrives very expensive to fit.

for me the hardest challenge would be balance, with races like the asgard and replicators being way overpowered so id have to spend a lot of time making sure that the asgard cant just puch over the goauld or the replicators cant just mow down everyone.

Summary: The year is 2300 human kind has come very far and is just spreading out beyond our own solar system. We come into contact with a peaceful race, who call themselves the Vreld. The Vreld are stone/metal/ crystal sentient beings. They are the last fleet of their home and were destroyed by a race known as the Scythe. The vreld warn you of the scythe. The Scythe are sentient plant beings who travel from world to world using sentient lifeforms as hosts to grow in number by means of spores. The Scythe are on their way to earth to consume the human race. The Scythe have already taken over a small outpost in a nearby solar system.
Before Mankind: There was a great race known as the Inventor. These beings wished to evolve beyond their physical form and began to conduct experiments. They wanted to see how life developed in relation to their own, they created the Vreld. In another galaxy the inventor gave sentience to plants Creating the Scythe. The Vreld grew into a powerful race and remained ignorant of the existent of the inventor. The Scythe grew to fast and took over the inventor. The remaining inventors returned to earth, their homeworld, long since abandoned. They created an experiment to defeat the scythe but failed utterly turning them into all the earthly plants and making humans.

(basically we are the early form of the inventors before they expanded we
are beings from the first earth era and the character we play as is from the second earth era.)

and yeah you go around gearing up your character getting all sorts of devilish weapons like the acid-wire-net grenade (a grenade that when thrown, opens up revealing a razor wire net covered in acid, spikes emerge from the grenade and the grenade is propelled forward.

just so you guys know i made this all up as i went along so if anything is incoherent i apologize.

Sort of a scenario where you instead of being constraned to one map you instead have a solar system, with each person starting off on a home planet which has resources to start you off and such, a stargate, old ruins where thing like ancient tech can be found and such as well as native around you (eg: Nox or Tollan) and you can trade with them and buy tech sorta like in AOE III (depending on who you are and what you do)

the key to exploring other planets is to either create a fleet giving you orbital control and defences like space stations and ground based defences and after that you have to research hyperdrives and such to explore other planets onlt when in hyperspace it isnt simply a matter of zip and your done it actually takes time to get there depending on the distance. or you can use the gate but to get the code for the next planet you have to conduct research or maybe discover it in a ruin, and you then have gate acess for your troops and such but to get an enemy homeworld gate address you have to do both research and find a ruin on one of the planets close to the enemy home, but to make sure everyone dosent just skip this for a fleet ill make the fleets expensive and hyperdrives very expensive to fit.

for me the hardest challenge would be balance, with races like the asgard and replicators being way overpowered so id have to spend a lot of time making sure that the asgard cant just puch over the goauld or the replicators cant just mow down everyone.
ha i like stargate too but the story kind of went downhill. I like the concepts and ideas of it though and of course the p90.
