Thread: System Shock 2!!!

    System Shock 2!!!

FINALLY got it working on my computer, with the upgraded texture and character mods no less!!!

It's amazing how the gameplay still holds up after all this time. The game is also amazingly complex and dynamic, considering how old it is. I sincerely hope BioShock is half of what System Shock 2 is.

I'll be finishing System Shock 2...AGAIN...in time for BioShock.

There are some downloadable bug fixes and other gameplay edits - such as making pistols take up only 2 slots, etc.

naahh, only graphic enhancements for me, I like playing it the way it's meant to be played. The first time I beat it, back in the day, I played it with full weapon degradation, and still beat it. I remember when everyone was crying about how the weapons deteriorated so quickly, but I never thought it made the game too difficult or unfair. I love having to make each and every shot count. Plus, if you know where to look, you can replenish broken weapons quite often.

yeah, it's possible to get by, but that shouldn't be the point of the game
the degredation wasn't fun which is the point of most video games (and if you find one that isn't, then the dev team has some serious soul searching to do)

people complained because they didn't enjoy having that feature in. also it was a bit unrealistic too.

i have to agree, weapons do degrade over a time, but thats it, its quite a LONG time before it "Really" shows

the level of degradation was definitely unrealistic, but I enjoyed the challenge it presented, which made it fun for me. I'm playing it through again with the original level of degradation. I've found 4 or 5 pistols before I even hit the engineering deck.

Yeah, I enjoyed the short durability of the weapon. I'd be using my wrench most of the time anyways and would bring up my gun for necessary things - armor piercing, etc. I never go with 2 or more of the same weapon though - big waste of space.

Yes you must . Honestly though, you won't regret it and will find it to be one of the most extraordinary games ever made

Don't know how people can say " oh taht gun degredations is so unrealistic" , um newsflash buddy none of the guns are realhow can you call something that doesn't exist in reality unrealistc, it boggles the mind.

The fact is degredation was added for challenge, the idea was to use your head instead of your finger and think the situation out.

For this realisticness isn't my issue, I just found it annoying how it happened so much. =]

I wouldn't mind it in the game, but like most RPGs (for me) it had the effect of turning the game into 'work' which is a huge no no.

Its perfectly reasonable to call it unrealistic, we have guns today that last orders of magnitude longer than the guns in SS2, so it makes you wonder what happened to the metal manufacturing in the future that they could build starships and not a pistol that can shoot 50 rounds without breaking.

That said, realistic or not realistic is completely irrelevant, since its a game and the decision should be made on if it makes the game fun more fun (most people say it didn't... I agree )

I started playing SS2 again though and if you blow a bunch of points in maintenance, its really not that big a deal, but then you limit yourself even more on how many weapons and psi powers you can use.

I definitely think bioshock has a much better system overall gameplay wise, not even counting all the cool new features that would've been impossible when SS2 was made

I can accept people don't like it, but you have to understand that for those of us that yearned for this kind of survival horror experience a lack of guns was an essential part, how scary would condemned be if you found a new submachinegun every 5 minutes. The knowledge that you couldn't afford mistakes always kept you on edge especially the first time through.

I'm not going to disagree with you there, but I found that it wasn't really hard to make mistakes in the first place. Sure, you may be too lazy to take out your wrench and just shoot some glass or something, but you can just buy or find maintainence (sp) tools and repair the pistol or whatever you were using. Also, I found that if you just used the wrench on hybrids and a few other things like monkeys, you didn't even have to worry about the condition of your weapon.
This being said, I do agree that if you used your guns too much, it got to the point where you would have to bust out the wrench on things like midwives and whatnot. The most problematic thing with the whole gun system for me was the lack of AP rounds for anything. You know, it really made me think about switching to AP ammo for any of my weapons, and I really appreciate that in a game.
