Firaxis's Abandonment of Civ 4: Unforgivable

It has been more than one month since I posted on these forums asking if anyone at Firaxis would put any effort whatsoever toward FIXING Civ 4, which has been largely ruined by the Patch 3.17. The only response I have received from them (privately) was to tell me to please install patch 3.17 in order to enjoy multiplayer gaming. What a pathetic joke.

I have a bad feeling that Firaxis has pissed off tens of thousands of their customers, but I have an even worse feeling that they don't care.

Sounds like you wanna refill Firaxis's care cup.

    Good luck with that.

Multiplayer works great if you Direct IP .. GameSpy solution is worthless in my humble opinion. Just make sure you have the appropriate ports going through your firewall and router or you take a rish and DMZ and turn off your computer firewall. That helps..

No, it does not help. The problems are with the game coding.

See my reply to the multiplayer problems. In fact try some of the offerings in that thread to see if they help you... http://forums.2kgames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=13912

Remember the other person you are trying to play the game with counts also.

Me and my Friend play from morning to evening on a Sat or Sun and have no disconnections when doing a direct IP connection and not going through GameSpy.

I have done this with my Windows XP machine and Windows Vista Ultimate Machine and I host the games and have no problems. since doing this.

notice you will have to give them your outside IP address which can be found on your router under the status of your connection or go to an internet site that shows your ipaddress.

Thanks, but that post has absolutely nothing to do with the problems we are experiencing with actual Internet play. Peer to peer direct IP play is not "Internet" play.

Direct Ip is in fact Internet Play. My friend lives in OK and I live in NC. It goes through the IP (Internet Protocol) which bypasses having to use gamepsy. You can log into Gamespy give your IP address and ahve those same people connect to you and you can include a password if you want, just like gamespy.

Only difference is there is no lobby system and your game is not searchable. Just trying to give you a really good alternative solution to the issue.

Gamespy uses those same port forwarding ranges in order to connect your game. So following those instruction could help you with having less disconnects or no connections to other games.

Anyway, I guess if you don't want to try it out then that's ok, your loss, not mine

In this aspect, Gamespy is to blame. It isn't just Civ, but a ton of games that are dysfunctional on their ****tacular servers.

"Server has broken the connection" messages are now happening daily for all users in the multiplayer lobby. They happen thousands of times per day total.

I should also not neglect to mention that peers randomly get stuck unable to join each other's games, for absolutely no apparent reason.

DOOM in the 90s allowed billions of bullets to be fired in the air without even much "lag." Civ4 doesn't even functionally allow 10 people to meet up and play a turn -based strategy game. Pathetic.
