Regarding the rep feature

Love the game (I play the Nintendo DS feature), but including the reputation feature likely just killed my desire to post here.

Reason, I've belonged to forums before that use this option.
What happens, people with mega rep beat up on schmucks with no rep.

Hey, I've been on forums where I was openly despised by a few people, and yet because I was buddies with the right people I still had so much incoming positive rep there wasn't thing one the few detractors could do about it.

If the people with mega rep wish to be mean, it's fairly effective in ***** slapping someone you decide isn't part of the inner circle.

And when the site explains "it's all harmless fun", well sorry, that's utter ****.

So I guess I will leave the forum to the people belly aching about online multi player and whatever other conversations are able to occur, and will just stick to the occasional browse and discontinue the contributions.

Actually, if you want to be ignored on a forum, I'd say pre-emptive complaining about something that hasn't impacted you yet combined with multiple examples of offensive language is a good start.

Nobody "beats up on anybody" here. If they do, they get banned. Period.

if this starts to happen, the reputation feature will go away immediately.

this is meant as a way to try and encourage quality and helpful posting, and limit trolling, flame wars, and other nonsense that so frequently happens on forums.

if i find that people are using this as a way to push personal agendas, or as a cliche/fan club/popularity feature, i'll take it away. there's no need for that here!

Well I'm just reporting how it went on another forum, of a commercial nature, on par with this one, with members supposedly as mature as you could hope for.

Didn't work for them either.

I also don't much care for ranks, and post counts being used.

If everyone was of equal rank, they'd have no point to post just to get a better rank. If post counts didn't exist, then a person's posts would have to be good on their own merits. They couldn't rely on a rank, or a post count to have "artificial" credibility.

I never discount ordinary human behaviour.

agreed: i always advocate never spamming for either of these things. i do like post counts as it allows people to see how long people have been around. (usually!)

Post count though is rarely accurate.

I've made it a point to check a forums membership on occasion for such things as how many are zero post count members that only joined for the sake of having all the possible functionality of a registered member.
In a lot of cases a forum can actually have quite a lot of zero post count members.

I currently have an account on a forum, where I am actually a very long term member of the forum. But as is the case with ordinary people, you occasionally encounter that one individual, or individuals plural that simply have no interest in making the stay pleasant. So my current account has precisely zero posts, and is going to remain that way. I have the permission of the site owner to do this as well. I read with it, but my only contact with others is through direct personal messages to the person that made the original post if I feel I can help the person at all.

I doubt that is done frequently anywhere of course.

I have also seen members, that have nearly no posts, but everyone KNOWS who the person is. If Sid showed up, and had a post count of 20 posts, I don't think anyone is going to judge him inaccurately based on that

If a person actually has anything worth a damn to say, and is known for posting comments worth remembering, they will be remembered by anyone that really cares.

I don't envy your task here by the way Liz. If I was you, I'd likely have quit a long time ago.
People spend a lousy handful of bucks on a stupid game, and they think they have a right to treat you like ****.
Your spirit and cheer is not for sale for a handful of bucks I am sure.
If you were standing at a customer service desk in a store and some of the remarks aimed at you were said in person, you'd be in your right to tell them you didn't need to listen to it and ignore them.
