German Unit Upgrade
I was playing with the Germans last night and noticed that some of my units automatically upgraded when a newer tech was researched. For example, I researched feudalism and some horsemen were upgraded to knights and then traded for combustion turning some knights to tanks. Is this a perk that just the Germans get or what??
Any elite units will be upgraded. That is one of the German's main assets.
Yes. All their elite units upgrade as soon as you research the next tech in the line:
Horsemen -> Knights -> Tanks
Warriors -> Legions -> Knights -> Tanks
Archers -> Pikemen -> Riflemen -> Modern Infantry
Galleys -> Galleons -> Cruisers
The thing to note is that you can't skip one step. Say you've got a bunch of elite archers, and you research gunpowder. These won't become riflemen. They won't upgrade to riflemen when you later get democracy either... They rather become pikemen. You need to research democracy before gunpowder for this to work out.
Thanks this is exactly what I wanted to know
Catapult -> Cannon -> Artillery
regarding the german upgrade do anybody had the experience that a unit didnt upgrade
I played a game last night had some knights had some tanks the knights went to be elite but no upgrade
do any off you know if you have to have the elite unit when you reach a new tech or if it is suffient to just get to elite while you possess a certain upgrade and I just hit a bug
You have to be elite when you get the new tech
You also have to have all the intermediate techs. So that if your horsemen should upgrade to tanks, you need to have feudalism before combustion. If you first get combustion, nothing happens. When you get feudalism later, your horsemen become knights.
I really think it would be better if the upgrade would happen if units upgraded whenever they became elite, as well as all units upgrading as far as possible when new techs where researched. I think that that way it would be both more balanced and easier to understand.

yearh i got kinda confused when my knigts didnt become tanks.
still won the game but thats another story
btw. playing a few games with the germans against deity i come to think that they could be competitive. I think the +1 produktion is a very good bonus.
only think is they have to be played very science heavy. takes a lot off resources when they dont get any science bonuses.
The +1 production bonus is incredibly powerful early game It only takes a population of 4 to reach a production of 10/turn (with 3 forests). That means that you can pump out the early buildings in 4 turns, while warriors/archers/legions need 1 turn and horsemen/catapults need 2 turns
I think the production bonus used well is the german key to being competitive (and as I play ranked with all civs, I do of course think there's nothing stopping the germans from competing either).

and getting a great leader as GP would more or less be the equal to getting collossus as the egytps.
but I dont think you should go culture heavy with the germans. i've found that going tech, and production (and surely communisn as goverment) is the best way but off course you should harvest the first 5 or so great persons
I like Germany a lot, although the science thing is an issue - I havenŽt figured yet how to deal with it. Maybe using the production for libraries or just forget about it and mass produce legions. I wish someone could point out a imaginative and effective strategy to not fall behind in tech with the Germans.
Anyway what I wanted to say about the upgrade is that most people (me included) think about it in an offensive way like "IŽll make 4-5 elite legions that woul suddenly become Knights-tanks that will win me the game". This could be posible but I find it easier and more usefull for the defense. what I do is build 1-2 archer armies in every city and then just declare war to every (or nearer) AIs. Most of the times they will send single warriors or legions, giving you the veteran and elite upgrades. Of course you must be sure you can defend yourself, no way to do this if the other player is strongly attacking you. However you allways can "force" the stupid AI back in peace if you are in danger.
If it works youŽll have the whole game defense. Also you can use this units to cover the weaker attacking units when you are conquering someone. Catapults could also benefit of killing the weak AIŽs units, although sometimes you would harrash them giving you no experience.
In my opinion germans are a civ as others until they reach a good empire. I mean, you should start exploring fast, looking for zulu. You have a good possibility to kill an army (normal) from a hill (2,5 v 3) but you should be smart. That's why I don't suggest to use germans against zulu, and I won't try them until I won't think about trying germans (maybe I will try them soon). However, following my normal strategy, of expanding as much as possible, for example 7 cities before industrial era, you could play as well germans. All science cities but 1, or 2 if you want. Getting currency you would have gold. At least 2 cities with libaries (don't rush these, use the +1 trees production). Don't waste your production on warriors unless you don't get a great leader. Build at least a city with good production (3 forests and grasslands to grow until 4 pop at least) that means 10 production. If you have a great leader put this in this city and build a lot of legions using at least other 2 cities, you could have the same 10 production, that means an army each turn. When you reach feudalism you shouldn't stop and continue until tanks (if they attack you, you have your knights), focusing now on gold and science, not so much on production.
If you don't have a great leader you should build a lot of cities early and building a lot of armies without taking the knowledge of iron working, remember that AI's order is bronze working - iron working most of the times, so if you have 30 science, you will get it from backfilling. Produce many armies and remember to reach the medieval era for +1 trees production, so continue to tanks. That works in my opinion, remember to move your units out of your cities, so if they flip your cities, you can reconquer that, he won't have more than 6 (9 in a hill) if you have archers
Love playing Germany, one of the genuine fun civs.
I find culture to be their weakness personally, they are vulnerable to flippage a little more than others IMO.
are you kidding? are you litierate?
