    Formula for City Growth

Does anybody know the formula for how cities grow ?

That is "Given you presently have x citzens, it will take this much food to get another citizen ?"

With patch 1.20, I'm curious to see how much the 20 food 1 settler provides contributes to the growth of a city.

i let my friend borrow the game so i cant test this for you but it should be pretty easy. it you can tell me how many food it takes from 2-3,from 3-4, and from 4-5, i can give you the formula assuming that they dont use a quadratic equation. so do that for me and i will give you a formula.

From what I noticed it takes 20 food to go from 2POP to 3POP

It's easy, here you can understand how it works:

    1 pop: 2 food * 5 turns = 10 food
    2 pop: 4 food * 5 turns = 20 food
    3 pop: 6 food * 5 turns = 30 food
    4 pop: 8 food * 5 turns = 40 food
    5 pop: 10 food * 5 turns = 50 food
    6 pop: 12 food * 5 turns = 60 food
    7 pop: 14 food * 5 turns = 70 food
    8 pop: 16 food * 5 turns = 80 food
    9 pop: 18 food * 5 turns = 90 food
    10 pop: 20 food * 5 turns = 100 food
    11 pop: 22 food * 5 turns = 110 food
    12 pop: 24 food * 5 turns = 120 food
    13 pop: 26 food * 5 turns = 130 food
    14 pop: 28 food * 5 turns = 140 food
    15 pop: 30 food * 5 turns = 150 food
    16 pop: 32 food * 5 turns = 160 food
    17 pop: 34 food * 5 turns = 170 food
    18 pop: 36 food * 5 turns = 180 food
    19 pop: 38 food * 5 turns = 190 food
    20 pop: 40 food * 5 turns = 200 food
    21 pop: 42 food * 5 turns = 210 food
    22 pop: 44 food * 5 turns = 220 food
    23 pop: 46 food * 5 turns = 230 food
    24 pop: 48 food * 5 turns = 240 food
    25 pop: 50 food * 5 turns = 250 food
    26 pop: 52 food * 5 turns = 260 food
    27 pop: 54 food * 5 turns = 270 food
    28 pop: 56 food * 5 turns = 280 food
    29 pop: 58 food * 5 turns = 290 food
    30 pop: 60 food * 5 turns = 300 food
    31 pop: 62 food * 5 turns = 310 food

    I'm pretty sure

so... take the population unit you are at, multiply by 10, and that is as much food as you need to get to the next level. thank you morte .

So I noticed that secondary cities need a different amount of food than a capital to increase pop. Here is info I got from game I jsut played.
    Key- AQD= aquadect, GH= Great Humanitarion(settled)

    Pop Food Captial Seconday
    2-3.... 20 .... ?
    3-4.... 30 .... ?
    4-5.... 40 .... ?
    5-6.... 50 .... 30
    6-7.... 60 .... 35
    7-8.... 75 .... 42
    8-9.... ? .... 49
    9-10.... ? .... 56
    10-11.... ? .... 56
    11-12.... 75 .... 64
    12-13.... ? .... 64
    13-14.... 77.... ?
    14-15.... 77.... ?
    15-16.... 63.... 63
    16-17.... 68.... 68
    17-18.... 75.... 64
    18-19.... 75.... 58wAQD
    19-20.... 45wAQD.... 58""
    20-21.... 64"".... 58""
    21-22.... 42WAQD+GH.... 58WAQD+GH
    22-23.... 42''''.... 58''''
    23-24.... 42''''.... 58''''
    24-25.... 42''''.... 87''''
    25-26.... 42''''.... ?
    26-27.... 42''''.... ?
    27-28.... 56''''.... ?
    28-29.... 52""".... ?
    29-30.... 52""".... ?
    30-31.... 52""".... ?

So for the game I played the numbers Morte put up do not fit exactly.

For the secondary city they seem to require less food earlier but more food fo higher pops. Unless there are multipliers that I do not know about.

Also does anyone know if you produce extra food does it roll over to the pool of food needed for the next pop.

and once POP is maxed at 31 do you gain anything from and food produced.

What MorteEterna wrote is NOT correct.

It seems to be about right up to around pop 6 or 7, but after that it won't increase by 10 every time. I've got the numbers written down somewhere, but as I'm on vacation I don't have them with me.

Anyway, after checking this out I figured that the 20 food from settlers was a pretty nice amount It's still very possible to create huge cities, only it won't work that quickly. There might be other things you'd rather spend resources on

And to dabious13, yes they do roll over.

Thanks all for the replies !

Eireksten, when you'd get back I'd love to see the numbers if you have time to post them.

Too bad the strategy guide doesnt give the magic numbers...it gives the formula for great people, but not for cities.

i will be able to give you the formula tomorrow afternoon once i get my game back from my friend. also, what is the formula for great people?

According to the strategy guide, if your city has n people, then it will require

    ((n+3)*(n+3)*100))/6

culture to receive the next great person.

when you say N people...do you mean your civs total population?
also....the thing for food is incorrect. i am not sure what the real formula is,but if it is anything like the formula for GP it is almost impossable to solve.
