Thumbs up GameStar/GamePro features Bioshock in Mai issue

The article is 7 pages long and contains information about the game itself, Little Sisters, Irrational, Art dèco and weapons. It's very likely there are about 4-6 short videos about those topics.

this issue should be available to subscribers since last Saturday.

There is about 30 seconds of new footage in the "highlights" video available here. Nice but somewhat spoiler-ish!

That's pretty cool! It seems there's actually an animation for applying EVE hypo.

this issue hits the store on the 28th and you're right, the kiosk-ausgabe won't have a single bioshock video on it's DVD.

    Click on "kostenloser download".

Wow, that is a really awesome preview video. The combat in BioShock is so intense. I'm more interested in it for other reasons, but I can't imagine the average shooter fan not liking it, based on this footage and the Hunting the Big Daddy video. The graphics are so nice.
It still doesn't have crosshairs or an interface though. Ken said this is in, but why aren't we seeing it? Also, why doesn't the tommy gun have any muzzle flash?
Is this just a sampling of the video included with the magazine or is this the whole thing? Also, any chance of some high-res scans of the article? If not, then could someone who gets this magazine share some of the new information?

Can anybody post a direct link to the video, or do you have to be a member in order to view the video?

I can't seem to find the link

Also, what happened to the pipes? If my translation is correct, the big daddy opened a bronze door and out climbed a Little Sister. wtf?

  11. #11
Could you give me your translation?

  12. #12
Does anyone here have the magazine? It certainly sounds like ffanxii4ever does. If someone does, could they please either give scans, give a translation, or summarize any new or interesting information. If someone could do that it would be really awesome.

Hopefully this works as a direct link for you:

    http://www.gamestar.de/_misc/downloa...ode=100&opv=go

Duration: ca. 30 seconds (after 00:45 position in the video)

    Audio commentary transcript:

Hello fellow readers and welcome to Bioshock. What you are seeing here shows some rapid combat scenes from the upcoming shooter by 2k Games - which is the publisher - and the developer Irrational. Even when it looks like adrenalin fueled shooting at first glance: Bioshock is a quite tactical game, which puts a lot of weight on mood and atmosphere, apart from action in the first place. Furthermore it contains strong RPG elements.

Did anyone else notice the boat anchor?

I was more interested in the ice plasmid (with the spikes like that, I wonder if you could do a melee attack) and the home-made rocket launcher (the spark plug is a nice touch).

That video makes it look like there's a heck of a lot more where that came from. So those who have the DVD, please do let us know what exactly is on there BioShock-wise.

    Ok, thanks.

I know how it feels... When I was a subscriber to my favourite Hungarian PC mag I got some issues 1-2 weeks later and a few of them have never arrived... I had to ask them to send it again.

Okay, guys. I got the the magazine right here (without DVD trailer though).

I won't scan the magazine. After I worked as a video game editor, it's some kind of codex not to scan magazines.

BUT I will provide some translated infos from the 7 pages long article in the mag. Since there are some spoilers maybe, please select/mark the following to read it.

The Xbox 360 version is finished in most parts, PC version (done in Australia) is also shaping up nicely.

Since the game is now coming in the final phases, Irrational has increased the amount of team members by 30%.

2K games made focus tests (inviting players for testing) in New York: Feedback was done via written documentation and video recording. While most bigger game projects do so, 2K said focus tests have never been this big.

Spoiler (story/beginning): As you probably know, the game starts in the airplane, where you have a smoke until suddenly a alarm rings. The plane crashes into the ocean. After that scene, the game is already interactive. You can swim around at the water surface. Explosives everywhere, but no other survivers in sight. Then you discover the island with the lighthouse and swim over there. Inside of the lighthouse, you discover the bathysphere...

Spoiler (Little Sisters - some about their origin): The Little Sisters are genetic experiments done by Dr. Tennenbaum. She turned the little girls into Adam search machines. There is also a sidequest or sidestory about her in Bioshock.

After the Big Daddy is defeated and you come to a unprotected Little Sister, a menu will pop up, asking you to "Save Little Sister" or "Harvest Adam".

There are indeed NPCs, giving you quests to solve. Quests will be saved in a questlog. A active quest will feature a guiding arrow, to show where to go to. Don't worry, this can be turned off, too.

Only three Plasmids are allowed to be active at the same time.

Weapons can be modified: Change fire frequenzy, range, strength or add extras like a scope. Bullet types can be changed, as well (Normal, Explosive, Tranqualizer...).

Spoiler (Story - how to modify weapons): There is a mad inventor named Fountaine, who likes to help people from the lower society levels with cheap weapons. Machines around Rapture with the slogan "Power to the people!" allow free weapon upgrades. Each machine seems to have unique weapon upgrades.

Spoiler maybe (Creative "weapon"): A camera is also a "weapon". Use it to make photos of enemies. Doing so will allow you to analyze their weaknesses. The more you analyze them, the better is the damage you do against them. Close shots of living enemies have a bigger effect than photos of dead ones. Maybe you can even use dead bodies as a medipack in the end

Spoiler (Story - a NPC and player choice): The mad artist Cohen has lost all of his fans and worshippers. He really has a ill and pervert character. After you got in one of his traps, you are asked to either help him with his work or fight him. Ken Levine said Cohen is like looking inside Hannibal Lector's head.

HUD is especially designed for both systems. While Menus, texts and Icons are much bigger for TVs (360), they are smaller and filigree for PC screens. Shortcuts are there, too.

PC resolution will be supported for up to 2560x1600 pixels.

Vista gets DirectX10 effects and better framerates.

PC and 360 look equal in terms of graphics. PC might end up with a bit more details, when the game is finished.

EDIT: Dialogues are only in cutscense and not dynamic.

    Question

Thanks a lot Rapture_Tourist, though I don't quite get what you mean by "Since the game is now coming in the final phases, Irrational has stocked up its team for 30%.".

As other’s have said, thank you for the linguistic support, Rapture Tourist

Focus tests can bring about a positive or negative result. Only time will tell if they truly removed aspects of Bioshock deemed uninsteresting or not enjoyable, hopefully matching such tastes as the astute members we have here.

I’m leery when hearing about some sort of menu prompt when cornering a Little Sister I can understand such a menu fitting into a console control scheme, reducing the need to cycle through applicable commands, then applying the "Save Little Sister" or "Harvest Adam" options to buttons A&B. On a PC, I don’t see the need for such a menu, when you could hotkey the two options. I know some would say that a rule of thumb among developers is to “not go keyboard crazy, keep the interface streamlined”, but BD/LS have been the most prominently featured denizens of the game, so I don’t see a problem with binds simply designed for the two aforementioned options.

I can understand your concern, but remember: Displayed cruelty against children may surely cause problems with censorship. I guess that is why the pop up menu cicrumvents displayed actions.

I also added the following on the last page (forgot it):

Dialogues are only in cutscense and not dynamic.

I'm not really referring to that, Rapture Tourist. My concern is interface-based, not material. The resulting actions would still end up the same in my example. There is no need for a block of text outlining the option more than once on the PC version, when a simply frob highlight of the Little Sister followed by the selected hotkey press of the players chosen option, the same options the menu present, will be much more fluid.

Could you possibly mean that Gamestar received a manipulated build from Irrational in order to not tread on any censorship issues? I've heard how Germany is very anal about that stuff.

Nope, they made a studio visit in Boston and played (watched?) the game there.

Then what you said about censorship through that menu doesn't make much sense, unless they had content block turned on

    Anyways....

It’s good that only 3 plasmids are active at one time, lest we have a legion of juggernauts blindly decimating the rooms they choose to do battle in. Explaining how the bloodstream can compartmentalize and distribute so many injections intravenously would make it harder to suspend disbelief with if not having this limited imposed.

The camera weapon reminds me of a game with some girl and a camera, can’t remember the title. It’s a nifty idea, that of actually analyzing a potential living obstacle before conquering or bypassing it, instead of the droll approach most FPS’s use, introducing a big baddy via an over-the-top cutscene.

I don’t quite understand what is meant by using corpses as medpacks, but what I would like to see is the telekinetic manipulation of corpses at higher levels of the plasmid, similar to HL-2’s gravity gun getting the upgrade upon entering the citadel.

I'm sorry to hear that, because that's the one snippet he posted that was clearly mistaken. You might start the game limited in that fashion, but you can get upgrades to be able to use significantly more than that.

I don’t quite understand what is meant by using corpses as medpacks,
Remember Annelid Healing Organs from SS2? It's sort of approximately like that.

Excellent The idea of the limit is what I'm happy about (not the #3), the limitation being whatever you guys decide is best, and at what intervals you can increase the maximum.

Similar to Annelid worms, but instead the harvested components go towards health packs instead of ammunition, gotcha

BTW is the red beard still around? :P

    Huh?

Is it just me or does anyone else think the Hazmet suit from SS2 looks like Paul Snr. from American Chopper? (I mean, in your peripheral vision, when you're using the inventory)

...I used to call it the 'Big Paul'

@Raveness: Never mind. I just thought you were surprised that you can't decide about the Little Sister directly - that you can't "kill her". I just meant that it is not allowed showing how kids get killed in games.

Thanks RT— that's brilliant (I couldn't resist reading the spoilers)

    !Contains Spoilers!

That all sounds pretty good to me. I guess harvesting Adam from the Little Sisters was always going to be problematic, but that sounds like quite a elegant solution. Maybe if, when you choose 'Harvest', the screen could just fade to black, and then back into the game with an indication of the deed having been done (such as the player-character holding the Adam etc.).

Either that or, well...are we sure they're genetic experiments?
