Been there. 2K didn't do much research looking for a place "in the middle of nowhere". Not only is it a major fishing area it's also a main shipping lane in the summer. Not in winter though. Terrible cold storms then, and most ships shy away then. I was in one while working a fishing boat and was in a bad state: half the time scared I was going to drown, and the other half being so seasick I'd wish I would. During the last time we heard from a radio on the boat that another in the area disappeared during the same storm, but that was a long time ago. Not sure how bad it is now..

Have you been to Ireland? for some reason I have always been drawn to Ireland while never being able to go. Something has always "felt" like that is where I was meant to be since I was very young. I have had vivid dreams of places and locations in Ireland that I had never seen prior to my dream. I was just wondering if you have been there if there is any insight you have. I had a trip planned with Brendan tours going to the Waterford Crystal Factory and the "Blarney Stone" although due to financial reasons I have never been able to explore the world like I greatly want to.

2K should of made the coordanates somewhere around where the Titanic went down or something, out in the middle of nowhere. But not between two populated islands like that!

With that said, the note only asks Jack not to open until 63' 2' N and 29' 55' West. That does not mean those are Raptures coordanates. Remember, the whole thing was just a set up by Atlas anyway, so Atlas could of just written anything on that note.

And when he opened the box he hijacked the plane and made it crash, rapture is on those coordinates. And the point of lying about the coordinates is what?

I've been all over the world, and some places make you THINK there's magic there, but in Ireland it's easy to BELIEVE it's there.

I don't believe in magic, but when I was there, I could. Even though I knew that almost all the trees in Ireland had been destroyed in the 1920's and not replanted until the 1960's, I could look at the forests and believe in thousand-year-old trees standing in them that housed fairies and the Wee Folk. Even though I knew all the castles were modern tourist traps, I still could "see" wizards and maidens walking the halls. Even though I knew the clouds were gathering because of "a cold front from the North Atlantic", when the thunder roared I "knew" it was the Old Gods crying to be noticed. And when I was at Barney Castle, watching those "damn silly fool tourists" being held by legs over the side risking neck acnes while kissing a stone covered with a thousand of other people's germs, I, the great doubter, felt a soft kiss on my cheek, heard the soft whisper of "Welcome home child" , then laughter and footsteps running away from me, but saw ...nothing except the beauty around me..
Go to Ireland. Do what you can to do so. Magic doesn't exist...except maybe there..

I grew up in Ireland, so maybe I can help.

Do you have Irish blood? It truly does have a "magical" feel, like Katfather said. And I think it does exert a sort of....pull on some people. You don't have to be Irish, but it helps.

I was there from about 1976-1989 (summers there on the farm, the rest of the year in the US for school), so I can't say what its like today. That was before their big economic boom, so things were still relatively unspoiled and quiet. You never saw a lot of "tourists". My last year there, I ran into a gaggle of Japanese sightseers, and it was jarring. They weren't rude or anything, but they really stuck out. Like this hidden gem had finally been discovered by the world at large.

(To give you an idea of how long ago I lived there, as a child I was able to walk up to Stonehenge and touch the stones. There were no fences and no guards.)

Even so, go. Go as soon as you can. And don't worry about the sights. It's not like other countries, where you need to plan out your stops and such. Every corner of Ireland is a treat. I would probably avoid the north (where the war is) and stick to central and southern Ireland. Find a nice bed and breakfast, if you can, out in the country. Something small. You'll really want to mingle with the locals. If you are polite, they will happily regale you with stories about Ireland's fairy folk.

It's very interesting that you mention visions of places you've never been. Later in life, I learned I had some paranormal gifts, but the very first verifiable experience I had was in a castle in Ireland. I was only 7 or 8, and I told my mother I had a dream about a castle with a stuffed grizzly and a suit of armor in the main lobby, flanking a staircase that ran up the center of the room, hit the back wall, and split in both directions. And I said I saw a ghost on the steps. Later than same day, we went to that exact castle and heard stories about the ghost that prowled the stairs at night. I was so glad I told my mother beforehand, otherwise it would simply be deja vu. Ireland does that to you. If you go, you might actually see what you dreamed about. I suggest writing down the visions you have, so you have proof later on.

The other weird experience I had took place at night on a road. I have never believed in leprechauns per se, but this one incident has really made me think about them. See, the roads are very dark out in the country. No street lights, and only small farmhouses every few miles. And there are often critters in the road (cows, sheep, foxes, etc). But one night, just out of range of the headlights, something rand across the road. We didn't see an outline, but we clearly saw 2 eyes. They were about a foot off the road. And the gait was like nothing I'd ever seen. It didn't lope like a cat or fox. It had a sort of quick bounce, like....well....a little person. A very little person. My dad was a hunter, and I studied wildlife in college, so its not like we didn't know animals. And it stumped us both. It's a great little mystery that I'll wonder about my whole life.

Other than airfare, Ireland should be a relatively inexpensive trip for you. You'll just need food, lodging, and some form of transportation. You shouldn't have to worry about expensive meals or high-priced admissions to locations.

    Good luck!

    EDIT:
You've made me all nostalgic, so I'll share some old photos (20+ years) of our farm. That's me and my high school sweetie in the pics.

This is our farm, with one of the many fields behind us. Then some of our calves, our tractor, and me taking the adult cows out to pasture. (Yes, I'm rockin' the Member's Only jacket!):
    http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z.../Ireland1a.jpg
Then we have our church, Galway Bay, and two more farm photos (the last is us posing as the American Gothic painting after stacking hay--by hand!):

Careful there laddie. A true Irishman never, repeat, NEVER says whetever he believes in Leprechauns or not. If he says he doesn't, then the wee folk will come and bother him with tricks, sounds, and stealings until he believes, and if he says he does, they'll come to visit thier " new good friend" and drink all your ale.

And if they don't exist? Well, they don't, do they boyo? Nope, they don't exist, nor have any power than..

Ireland is wonderful! We come from Donegal, which is a lovely part of the country, but a place that you'll probably never get to visit because it's not on any of those tours and such.
The Glenveagh National Park and castle are cool to visit. I think that they have the largest herd of red deer in the country and the castle, though modern, is beautiful.
I don't know anything about little people and faeries and whatnot, but my mom and uncle do swear to god that there's a monster of some sort living in Lough Swilly.
I have never been to Blarney Castle. I don't think going there is something that natives ever think to do. No one in my family has ever been and I have no desire to go. I guess I should though someday.
You can go to the North now. No one seems to care too much. My cousin lives in Convoy and owns a shop in Derry, which is in Northern Ireland. He crosses over the border a million times a day. I went there several times on my last visit as well.
This is a hard time to travel though because with the dollar the way it is things over there are very, very expensive. But when you can afford it I recommend going! It's wonderful.

Thank you everyone for the insight... sorry I didn't mean to stray too far off topics but it has been a place I have been fascinated with for years. As far as I know I have no Irish blood in me. My first name is Kevin which is an Irish name however I doubt that would have any relevance, just an observation. Maybe someday I can go if it were up to me I would just grab a backpack head out and figure everything else out along the way however with a family it has to be a little more structured than that and that unfortunately takes $$$ like everything else.

At any rate thanks again it makes me love the place even more.

Well, I guess my great wonderful intellegent answer would be "huhhh.. kinda" Some miles distance. Near it, not on it. Maybe close enough. More of an outcrop... (Gee, beganing to understand why I didn't get an "A" on my geology test. And yet my teacher was so nice the night before.. Maybe I snored too load again..).

Just curious, are you indicating that your teacher heard you snore? Which would indicate you were sleeping with your teacher? Which would be what you meant by "my teacher was so nice the night before"?

Oh, nevermind... Anyways, I thought that area had a bit of Geothermal activity.

I think it has a small amount, as in volcano heat, as Rapture used the power of volcano's to get energy.

    Hey

Hey what i dont get is how would he know when exactly he was at those coordinates. He would have to have some kind of guidence system and im sure givin the time period he prolly wouldnt be able to carry it is his pocket. Maybe im thinking to into this? lol

Or you can make it even more "unlikely". Because of the "would you kindly" thing, maybe he just knew that this is it, since he had to do it(a really stupid thougt tough). But I must say I am a little shocked that Rapture was so long up north. I guess the geothermal wasn't that good at that time

Thats cool. I love when people find this kind of stuff. At least 2k wasn't to blind and made the coordinates on Land.

Sighhhh. The story takes place in the 1960's, not the 1600s. Believe it or not we weren't THAT stupid then.. (wait a moment.. Cold war..lack of civil rights..lack of equal rights to women.. Alright, maybe we were a little stupid..)

But the instruments for giving longitude and latitude had been on ships and planes for a very long time before 1960, and you could find them in every ****pit on every plane; you know, a ****pit like the one that Jack had to take over when he took over the plane.

But you know, even if Jack didn't know where he was going, good old what's-his-name could have just written down "Just fly this way until you see this giant lighthouse that can be seen for miles and is so different and eye catching that everyone seeing it will remember it and tell everyone they know about it the first chance they get. This is where you'll find the SECRET LOCATION of Rapture".

    Huh??

(Speaking of idiotic things, it seems 2K won't let me write the name of the place where pilots fly thier planes from. This, from a company that uses worse actual foul words all the time in the game. Sorry folks, but it's a real word. I learned it when I was in first grade; how far did you go? I also wonder, what do I do if I want to talk about British male chickens? er Spaniel
dogs? Who killed "blank" Robin? How about a drink of tail? C'mon, let's not be so stupid. No more of this "blank" and bull..

a good point, but I'm basing it on me being there 30 years ago. It was a shipping lane long before that, and a fishing area for the last 3 hundred years beforehand. Oh, and in the 1950s and 1960s it was a nato wargames area. Very heavy traffic area. Putting rapture in that area would be as good a secret as putting a store in the middle of a l.a. freeway..

So, Katfather, did you consult on the creation of BioShock? Seems like you have some amazing coincidences associated with the game. What with you knowing Bobby Darin and working on a boat right where Rapture was located.

Nope, although one of my stories seemed so much like a part of Rapture my agent contacted them about it. She was very rudely dismissed..
Being on a fishing boat there was just likely. That's where the fish was; that's why I was so surprised at the location given. Thought every person who had ever sailed the seas knew that was a "used" spot.
As for knowing Bobby, my daddy made records. Bobby was just a nice guy who sometimes was nice enough to babysit us.He was fun.
Nope. No consult. I wish they had. I would have told them to go South, between Africa and South America. Around the "20'20" More plate tears there to gain energy.., less traffic (that's where I had my underwater city location 20 years ago in my story, although my story took place post-world war 3).
But they would have most likely been too rude to listen to me anyway..

I would of directed them north of the area between South America and Africa...between North America and Europe...perhaps the old shipping lane that the Titanic used, which is no longer in use since it is laden with iceburgs. Somewhere like that would be very secretive.

Going south would expose the lighthouse since ships pass everywhere in the south Atalantic. However, if a more southren area is needed, perhaps something in the famed Bermuda triangle...an area that some ships and planes try to avoid.

Despite what liars like Berlitz have said, the bermuda triangle is actually one of the most well traveled areas of the atlantic. I myself was there 3 years ago on a Carnaval cruise and saw dozens of other cruises ships all around us (the only odd thing that happen to us in the triangle was the skies and air turning green for a while; a natural reaction sometimes when sea waste hits warm air. Still, it looked creepy..) One of the reasons for some of the disappearaces is because it's so busy. Too many ships for the coast guard to keep track of all the time.. Also, it's not unheard of for 2 private ships to run into each other with one sinking and the other leaving ship and people behind without saying a word about them because they don't want any trouble with law and costs (a coast guard captian once informed me that he knew of at least 3 ships gone down that way in the month we were talking about, and not a single one of them were mention in the news despite a high loss of life. The easy, carefree life on the islands we see in movies and tv is mostly a myth. Life can be very hard there, and for some, very cheap. (Super, you back me up on this can't you?)
Because all the crowding, I doubt if a Rapture there would be very good at all. Oh, by the way, the bermuda triangle, as well as bermuda, is in the NORTH atlantic. A understandable mistake that everyone makes..

Well yeah, the southren part of the North Atlantic.

Ok, then there are two good areas left that would give Rapture the secrecy that it needs. The first one I have already mentioned...the very shipping lane that the Titanic used in 1912. Soon after the disaster, that lane was closed, and most cruise ships were directed in a more southerly lane to avoid the iceburgs. To this day, the old Titanic lane is not used. And at 3-4 miles down, it is just deep enough for Rapture. However, it is because of the incredible danger from iceburgs that it might present a problem to actually get passengers to the lighthouse. Passengers bound for Rapture would run the same risk as did the Titanic, and would have to dodge the deadly iceburgs, or suffer the same fate as did the doomed super-steamer on that cold April night in 1912.

The other area that would give Rapture total secrecy, is the dangerous area called "Drakes passage" near the south tip of South America. It is the passage to get from the Atlantic to the Pacific, and as you know it was the only way to get past the westren hemisphere by ship...until the Panama canal was built. As you know, Drakes passage is laden with constant storms and high seas (like in the Bioshock launch commercial), and and because of the immense danger, ships have tried to avoid using it, sometimes opting to go the other way around the Earth to get to the pacific!. Early wooden ships and pirate ships were weary of that passage because of the constant danger, and even todays ships avoid it. That could be a perfect place to hide Rapture. However, the storms would hinder getting passengers to the lighthouse in the first place.
