Thumbs down Using Nukes without suffering the consequences

During my last game (Emperor, tech victory, playing the Greeks) I managed to build the Manhattan Project, giving me a free nuke. Some turns later, I got the report that the Egyptians were 7 leaders/wonders away from winning a cultural victory.

Since I was in a democracy, congress prevent me from using the nuke. I went into anarchy, launched the nuke on Egypt's main city (5 wonders + 2 leaders, it wasn't their capital) completely wiping it of the map. The result? Egypt was set back severely in their attempt to win a cultural victory, and I suffered NO consequences. Nothing at all. I wasn't at war with the Egyptians. Nuking their city apparantly doesn't trigger a war. And since I was in Anarchy for one turn, I suffered no cultural penalty either. Next turn I switched back to Democracy, happily sold my Atomic Theory tech to the Egyptians I had just nuked, and went on my merry way to win the Space Race.

This has got to be an unintended bug. Other than having to be in anarchy for a mere 1 turn, there are no drawbacks for using a nuke.

But my oh my, it is fun...

having a nuke is a major bonus, but then again it's a race to the end and there's no certainty who will get it. i read an interview with the team that said it's meant more as a bargaining chip or deterrant but i use it to stop someone from pipping me to the post (or trying to... it worked once and not another).

it's all part of the game. This game throws up different ways to win, which is nice, and you exploit as you see fit and can

  3. Wait, using Nukes effect Culture... I have to test that out... but your right, I launched a nuke against the Arabs thinking that I'd be asked if I wanted to break the treaty, and I wasn't. Then when I sent my tanks in, wallah... I was asked... a bit stupid to ask AFTER I'd nuked them though Not that they could have done much, the Arabs had one City, were so technologically backwards, that they wanted to buy Alphabet from me for 50gold

How does it effect Culure exactly?

And I believe using nukes will mean that your any other civ that your still on the map with, will go to war with u sooner, just because you used that nuke.

And a tip for nuke users.... do NOT put your units right next to a square that your going to nuke... I learnt that the hard way.

I've noticed the nuke bug on the ps3 version. It must be a bug because surely other nations would condemn you for blowing up a city.

    nice point.

i didn't but after noticing it reduced a cities population to 1 i figured it also wiped out all the troops in there and thought it may be a good way to take a capital and would have lined my troops up waiting to pounce... so your pain is appreciated

    Hi,
Is there any way to determine which city is a capital city?
The Mongols were on their way to a space victory so i build the Manhattan Project thing.
I didnt know which city was their capital so i pressed Diplomacy and it zoomed on a city, so i thought thats got to be it.
Nuked it, but it got destroyed and they continued the space race.
I reloaded the save and lost about 50 turns.

If i nuke the Capital without taking it over the next turn will it still prevent Space and Economic victories?
Thinking about it now, i didnt build the nuke in my capital city so how do i know which city to destroy to stop them from winning?
    Thanks.

Why would it? Nuking the capital doesn't destroy it and if you don't take it over, they still have it.

They set it because it could block a domination victory, because if a capital is destroyed, you haven't conquered it, and you can't take it. Whatever does a nuke destroy all buildings, wonders, great people in a city? (I know that people become 1 and all troops are killed, but i haven't seen this..)

    Talking

Well if you think about, if a Civ gets nuked, how are they gonna know who did it. Its not like theres a certain color army outside and you/AI can tell who those troops belong too.

A nuke travels through the sky from an unknown point on the map.

I mean if you were a nation and a nuke dropped on one of your citys, you would just be like...Wtf man...whered that come from lol

    Thats my theory...

Can still happen though I was on a scenario with loads of barbarians nuked the aztec capital and the barbarians went in destroyed it. always kill the barbarians

Only one civilization can build the Manhattan Project, and will be the only one with a nuke. So if you get nuked, everyone knows who did it.

    Nuke Facts

Culture Effect: Lowers Culture one full level unless on Despotism or Anarchy(Because how can you blame a country if they are currently in a govermentless state)

Who Shot It?: When you shoot of a nuke it not only tells who shot it of, it displays a cutscene of it launching from their city. (Realistic because of Radar and Eyes)

I have a question: If you nuke a capital what are the exact effects? Pop loss? Building loss? Can you even nuke a capital?

As far as I know, every building, unit, and population gets destroyed (pop goes down to 1). The wonders, however, stay in tact. If you plan on launching it at capital have an army near by to march right in afterwards.
