Certain audio channels keep cutting out.

I have a soundblaster audigy from about 4 years ago. My problem isn't so much an audio stutter rather than sections of certain audio channels being cut out as if to make room for another audio channel. An example of this is an npc's speech somewhere off in the distance goes quiet in mid sentence and then picks up again at the end. It only happens when there are lots of sound effects occuring at once. Does this mean I need to lower my max channels in the .ini file or raise them?

Raise them to the number of channels that your card supports. However if there are more sounds than possible channels then you will still get drop-outs.

I'm not sure how many my card supports. I looked on spec sheets on Creative's website and they don't say.

It's hard to find if you're googling for channels, you keep getting back results like 5.1 and 7.1 channels which is useless. But if you google for maximum voices you start to get good results. Googling like this suggests a starting value of 44 to 64. (Voices is an old archaic term that only old people like me remember )

Ok so it looks like 64. The max in the ini file was 128. Was that the likely problem? I haven't had time to test it yet.

Being a four year old card it may be weak in the number of voices it has I would try 64 anyway and hope. Being an addon card to your system at least it should be easier to replace.
