Tried attacking washington at the beginning of the game and i just get slaughted, so whats the deal? Do i build get to a certain era before attacking or...?

dont all the games end in 1250 AD. IF they do that isn't much time is it?

Since everyone has the same stuff in the beginning usually, each nation's power is quite equal in strength. You can capture cities that are not protected but the AI will always get bronze working rather quick and build archer armies. So I would say that if you manage to kill someone in the beginning of the game, that player is bad. In other words, you should work on getting an advantage later in the game.
I always aim for Combustion, Mass Production, and then build the workshop that upgrades all your units, its a wonder.
All your units become Modern Infantry and Tanks, your enemies never know what hit them when you put your tank army against there gunpowder age riflemen.
