Do You Ever Get Time To Reach Alpha Centuari?

I was just wondering the idea of getting to the new planet at the end Alpha Centuari sounds really cool, but i was thinking do you ever really get the chance to get there

As everybody talk's about Cultural victories or Domination victories ect, so surely the game is already over before anybody get's the chance to get there.
I mean i saw a screenshot which showd one of them space bubble civilization (called the S.S. Mao, great name lol) and it said that it would take it 9999 years to get to Alpha Centuari and surely that is quite far forward in the tech tree of the game.
So if it will take a better thing than that surely somebody has already won before you get the chance?

The whole '9999 years' thing meant it will never reach Alpha Centuari. You need to get all the parts before launching. The more parts you have, the quicker it will reach Alpha Centuari. So whilst you may think your in a better position to send it quicker, someone else may send a more complete ship that'll reach it quicker than yours

you have answered part of my question but not all of it.
So how often do you actually get the chance to get to Alpha Centuari?? is it quite often or as i said has somebody usually already won??

i thinks theres several parts which make a whole ship, like on civ 4 and the first to complete all the ship parts can launch, i think.

Once you research the Space Flight tech, you will find space ship parts added to your building list. You need to start cranking them out, and once you have a workable ship, you can launch.

Don't think the parts will be cheap either They'll cost a hell load of production and you'll need a city surrounded by hills for the quickest production slot.

With the whole alpha-centaury, once you reach it, is it like winning the space race? I originally thought that since your goal was to get to alpha-centaury, you would get to play there as well ('cause sid's other game, the REAL alpha-centaury game), man, i wish you guys at 2K might convince him to bring that game back, maybe port-it to the wii (since by now it seems kinda obious that CivRev isn't gonna arrive).
