    CivRev PS3 multiplayer broken?

    I did a search and didn't find anything, so here goes.

    It's simple, really. I select multiplayer, go through the only options offered to me, then it reads "Looking for games" or something like that, but when it turns to the "Evaluating games" screen, it just stays there.

    It doesn't freeze, and you can back out of it to go to single player, but multiplayer just won't work for me. It doesn't go any further than that "Evaluating games" message.

    Any news on when and if this will be fixed?

    Sincerely,
    scarslasher, a brand new addition to the Civilization fanbase.

    I'm from Georgia, U.S.A.
    I'm not sure if it's a region issue now.

    And I believe I do recall the "Failed to host game" message.

    The same thing happens to me. After waiting a few minutes on the "evaluating games" screen, a "failed to host game, check your connection" screen comes up. I have no problems with any other multiplayer games so that isn't the problem. I have successfully gotten into 2 online games, but it's after many many failures. I hope they fix this and it becomes easier to get into multiplayer matches when the game is released. I know multiplayer is a big focus of the Civ Rev development and a major reason I'll be buying it on day one, but if the online component doesn't work on PS3 as well as the 360, I may stick with Civ 4.

    Our QA guys want you to take a look at GameSpy's firewall/router write-up to make sure you don't have anything that might be blocking your connection.

    I've received this too, after actually having played a game. So its not firewall based.

    So I'm trying to figure out what info they want us to look at on that page. Is it this:

    * 6667 (IRC)
    * 3783 (Voice Chat Port)
    * 27900 (Master Server UDP Heartbeat)
    * 28900 (Master Server List Request)
    * 29900 (GP Connection Manager)
    * 29901 (GP Search Manager)
    * 13139 (Custom UDP Pings)
    * 6515 (Dplay UDP)
    * 6500 (Query Port)
    If so, could a networking guru explain how we can open these ports on our PS3?

    Are you connecting through a router, and if so, what brand/model?

    Oh boy not sure, at work atm. Its a d-link though. I've been able to play a multiplayer game, but it was not very stable getting into it.

    Just to make clear. The PS3 itself isnt a firewall so you only need to open ports if you have a router with that functionality.

    Ah so i'm not the only one! When I saw the gamespy logo I already thought it has something to do with routersettings.

    My PS3 is connected wireless to a Apple Time Capsule.

    To the dev's : I will not be playing multiplayer games if i have to set new settings for my wireless set up. My Wifi works for everything except for Civ Rev, so i'm not gonna change anything. Hope a update for the game will come soon after release.

    My router is a Belkin. No firewall that I know of and GTA4 multiplayer (also powered by GameSpy) works fine on my PS3.

    If I have to change settings to play online, I'll be picking Civ 4 up alone.

    I think it's a lack of opponents ... Sometimes it takes a while.. If your able to play other games online there's nothing wrong with your network settings. Company reps are trained to always lay blame for any problem on something or somebody else. Guitar Hero III online for PS3 is a perfect example. Any of you who bought it at launch knows what I am talking about.

    netgear wpn824 v2...how exactly do i...and more importantly why should i have to do this?? Its a freaking console game.......

    I get this all of the time and I'm setup with DMZ on my router so I know it's not a port problem.

    Mods/QA can you verify this?

    It seems like in the demo you don't automatically timeout and get brought to a lobby on the PS3. The only time I do get to a lobby is if someone else is in it or someone else has just dropped (right before or right after I enter).

    I don't know if it's because I'm on wireless and my connection may fluctuate a bit more than a wired connection.

    PLS Fix in retail!!! Multiplayer is what makes this game worth $60.

    I think a better question to throw out there is, has anyone actually succeeded in getting into a multiplayer game on the PS3 Civ Rev demo yet?

    I've been trying everyday and have yet to succeed. I have only my PC and PS3 hooked up to my D-Link(801 I think?) router, both wired. My ISP is Rogers Cable here in Ontario Canada. I have never had any router problems with any online PC games or online PS3 games, I have NAT2 connection for the PS3.

    Sounds like its something on your side, you guys need to get this fixed. Especially when its the multiplayer part of the game that you guys keep touting and emphazing about, I won't buy the game till I get to demo the multiplayer part, how can you ask me to buy the game when the part you guys keep touting (multiplayer) isn't even working?

    I think I have some good news!

    I tried multiplayer in the full game and I got passed the "evaluating games" message. But I saw only computer players in the list so I didn't play a game yet. I never got that screen in the demo so I guess multiplayer works in the full game. Didn't expect to see anyone showing up in the multiplayer section already as it's only the 12th and not officially available. I hope some more PS3 owners get the game today so we can test the multiplayer for real.

    I eventually get into a game if I keep trying. But I shouldn't have to waste 10 minutes just to get into a lobby (where another player may or may not be)

    Just forget about multiplayer in demo!

    I'm pretty sure it will behave the same way on retail copy. I just tried the 360 version and it is much quicker. They need to get on Gamespy's @$$ and fix this. We don't need another GTA IV where it takes 2 weeks before we can get on.

    NICE!!!

    Any other surprises we should know about?

  26. #26
    I'm pretty torn over which version to buy. I really enjoy the quiet and peaceful sounds my PS3 which as my 360 sounds like a helicopter especially when playing disc based games.

    However, given that multiplayer is important to me and knowing that the PS3 uses GameSpy which I feel is pretty horrible compared to XBL, I may have to pick up the 360 version

    I guess if you are still in the choosing phase you don't live in europe or australia so you will still have the time to read what the european users with a PS3 retail copy have to say. I do agree with you that I was very disappointed to see the gamespy logo as well. I think I never got a multiplayer game to work with gamespy on my mac so it didn't surprise me It didn't work for the demo but it did surprise me it worked for the retail copy.

    Lol, it isn't the game, it's the crappy service Sony calls online play.

    I've decided to try multiplayer for the first time but it appears to be broken.
    It says evaluating games for a while then I get a message "Unable to host game, check your connection settings".

    I have no problems playing other games online and a connection test shows NAT type 2 and UPnP enabled.

    I've tried loads of times now but can't get a game.

    Is the gamespy service having problems now or should I exchange my game for the 360 version?

    Why does ps3 version have to use gamespy for anyway? it's crap

    ok. it works on the PS3... chill

    sometimes you have to exit and re-enter... that maybe simply that there aren't any games available at that time. But every night since i bought the game i ahve played a multiple player free-for-all, so it works.

  33. #33
    Yea guys stop turning this into a fanboy war.

    There are issues on both platforms having to do with Multiplayer.

    Anyone with the 360 knows what I'm talking about. How you'll get kicked from the lobby, see yourself alone in a lobby for a split second before being booted to the menu, and then reenter the same damn lobby only to get kicked again...

    I bought the game on PS3 the day of its release in Paris (France) cause I really like CIVILIZATION as I play this game since it's first incarnation. What a disappointment ! It's not the place but briefly the solo part of the game is pointless cause I already played and played and played a lot CIVILIZATION, CIVILIZATION II, etc... on my computer ! So nothing really new in sight ! But the people who create the game didn't even though about a progression system, like multiple scenario to unlock the following or unlock a civilization (roman, aztecs...). Nope ! You just have to play a lot to fill a pointless hall of fame. Anyway I didn't bought the game for that but I think it's the minimum of any game to offer to the players something really new ! It's not on a solo basis... at all !

    So after I played the demo (solo cause the online mode didn't work) and I was hooked again by the game and got lots of expectations. I encounter no problem so far with online game or just little glitches on PS3 (BURNOUT, RESISTANCE, MOTORSTORM, etc...). And so I arrive on CIVILIZATION really happy to play with other peoples even with a rank system. You can let your hopes at the door... I'm afraid !

    So ? You choose Multiplayer and Rank game. So far so good. You choose "Quick play" cause you want to play now and not tomorrow. And the problems occurs. You have to wait to find player. And to fill the 3 remaining slots with player is not as easy as it seems. But frankly I can't argue about a problem from the developpers of the game. Perhaps it won't sells or perhaps I'm too eager to find players a few days after its release (last week). So, why not... So far, in 5 days, I played 2 online games. And the 2 were failures. The first one finished when the game stucks and people trying to figured out what was going on (you can know cause you get in repetition messages like "Joe is in pause" and then "Joe is not in pause anymore". I don't have the right translations I play in french language). So the winner is the most stubborn, the one who read the booklet and know that if you quit the game you don't earn much points for the ranking. Silly situation ! Waiting to play... Little bit of play (let's say 30 minutes) and then 15 minutes to wait to know who is the most stubborn.

    Today I tried again. A party was made in less than 5 minutes, incredible ! But the same scenario occurs. After around 30 minutes (perhaps more, perhaps less) the stubborn game appears again. But worse when I was declared the winner (the kind who never let go !) the game froze completly. Even the PS button didn't react. So I had to turn off the PS3 manually. I turn it on again launch the game and then realize that I was wasting my time ! So I turn it off and find something more constructive to do.

    In fact I'm pretty pissed off to throw 60 euros for this result.
    And I didn't mentionned all the problems like the ranking system is divided in 3 different part (why ?) and it's the same of the week map. I played it twice (one in King mode and the other in Emperor mode) and I never found my score. By the way I defy anyone to be cool when you quit the ending menu of a game stating that you can see the score, the hall of fame, etc... So, you quit this screen and you think you'll go to the main menu. Wrong guess you'll have to go to the hall of fame. Pretty stupid ! I don't care about it ! It's a waste of my time !

    Hello mate. Read your mail and agree in principle with it all, but i just wanted to suggest not giving up hope yet as things will get sorted on all counts i've no ndoubt.

    It can be frustrating waiting for players, but it is early days yet. Only Europe has had the release which means less players, and i've no doubt a lot of people new to civ are still trying to suss the game out (remember, us that have played Civ for years have a HUGE advantage at the moment as we will pick up this new form of it immediately) and so possibly aren't online yet.

    With the freezing of the game (I loved the way you translated your description - congrats on your English by the way, it's very good) I know it's annoying, but it doesn't always happen. Out of about 15 games or so i've only had it happen 3 times (2 of which were yesterday) and have played the rest till the end or until the other players quit.

    In time there will be more players online and Sid and the gang will probably iron out these teething problems. In the meantime I suggest picking up a book whilst you wait for a game to fill up...

    Stick it out, in the long run this game is going to prove itself a great distraction

    by the way I agree with your assessment of the solo version. Personally i played it once and probably won't again. For solo play there is Civ IV but the joy of this version is playing 3 others in under 4 hours in glorious widescreen HD

    I bought the game last Saturday. Tried multiplayer but never was able to connect.
    Keep getting the same old looking for game, evaluating, and network error.

    I know it's not a network error since I even tried it with all ports open.
    Then I came to the forums and seems most people with this issue are saying that it's no enough players online.

    Anyone got some suggestions?
