Rome is the Most Powerful Civ in the game forget America

Starting- Begin with the Republic, and the Code of Laws
    Ancient- 1/2 price roads
    Medieval- 1/2 cost wonders
    Industrial- More Great People
Modern- New Cities have +1 population

I think the developers realised they made Rome overpowered so they gave them a totally worthless bonus in the modern era.

Why do you keep making these post? Why not make a topic discussing how each civ/wonder/relic/cow is overpowered?

Surely you've realized by now that everything is overpowered. I believe this was the goal, and they did a pretty good job at it, no?

Most things are overpowered which balances out and makes everything equal. although I see nothing overpowering about:

Modern- New Cities have +1 population

I will admit its very close, but America will still get my vote for now due to early chance at Phyramids / 50% tec bonus / **** load of Gold which will catapault them above everyone else.. Than you mix that with -50% hurry production costs and you may even be able to steal all the wonders before rome can get to them from medival era on. Than you have the 3x production bonus which is probably only 75% - 150% production bonus which will be great.

You see the main reason I say this is because rome is a little specilized for great early expansion and great people production and culture victory while america will enable easier access to any victory based on the situation.

    but it is very close.....

while i like both america and rome, i would say that japan and the aztecs are my powerhouses.

it's very much dependent on your preferences!

First of all I remmber one of the developers saying you need only 5 techs to advance to the the Medieval era, and since Rome already starts with the Republic, and Code of Laws they only need 3 techs to reach the Medieval era i think.

So yes Rome will have a good chance at hoarding the the best, and most wonders in the game, and since they start with the republic that also means they can expand quickly too.

Then they get the more great people bonus in the industrial era which will be a killer combination with all the wonders they have hoarded.

The half price roads is nothing special but it can help you with defense early on while your building all those wonders.

Also as far as rush production it is doubtful that America will have enough gold to rush wonders that early.

actually from one of the screen shots IGN put up 2 days ago, it appears the americans rush bonus only applies to rushing units, not buildings or wonders.

So maybe america won't be quite as uber-godlike as you first thought (still a good civ though, on that there is no doubt)

I think the overpowerdness of a Civ depends on your tactics. You can have very high bonusses, but if those bonusses don't fit in your tactics they'll be useless.

This goes completely against the norm of what the rest of you are saying.
I would have to consider England as being pretty powerfeull ( even if they are last lmao)

Having read through each civ's traits. The English get incredible defensive power through the Longbowmen (who are very cheap) so if you offensive goes wrong you have great deffense. they instantly get brilliant Navy and in Modern get basically the best navy possible allowing you to rule the seas in the early period and increase your sea power in the modern, so if you have a great navy, you rule the sea and can therefore go where ever you want.
They also start with a monarchy giving them a pretty decent and sturdy starting point

    Good old Brit's lol

i agree the english is a nice civ, but they really should have name the uu archers, longbowmen rather than longbow archer, that just sounds silly.
