So what if they have these features, the thing they exist in other games too doesn't make them bad. I like that in Vice City for example you could buy property, and I would also like it in Mafia, why not?

I really hope that there will be a countryside.
Imagine a chase in a 50´s car that starts in the city and ends somewhere far away from everything. It´s dark outside and you hunt your enemy on empty country-roads... After you have smashed him up against the fence there will be no witnesses when you shoot him down and throw the corps downhill.

Just CHILL, I think that game will be just right.![]()
The truth is there is a countryside in MAFIA II. But it have much lesser area than its predecessor...!!! =(

Who the hell want's a countryside lol
I sure would want too, I wonder how it is designed.
Maybe it will only be a small part on the edge in one of the corners in the map, or maybe stretched out surrounding the city on three sides.
I think one side will be sea, since we have seen the harbor on some screens.
I think a coutryside will be also important for a story part of the game as it was in Mafia.
But still it's not the most important part, so the coutryside will be just smaller.
There could be some nice scenes. Somebody said(wrote) Mafia II is partly inspired by The Goodfellas, so I think one of those movie scenes could be imitate.
eeem nope Daniel Varvra said that the countryside will not be a important part for the story but it will be a contrypart smaller than the first mafia countrypart ...but can you imagine the beauty of the countryside that will be on mafia 2?
Better than Oblivion graphics I hope
That's what I'm saying - the countryside won't be so huge and important as it was in Mafia.
I was reacting on this: But I was also saying that the countryside will be also important (in part) for the game.
Of course I can. That nature in Mafia was really great, but I'm sure that I didn't spend so much time inthere. I was there because of missions and sometimes (but still sometimes) even I was't playing a tale part of the game - in free-ride.
Yup. Have you ever seen The goodfellas movie - now I mean those two great scenes - the first scene in the movie, when Joe Pesci is stabbing a man in a trunk, and the second-one when they are getting his rotted body from the ground after six months.
Funny to see from the previous posts how bad calculating skills you people have![]()
(not that I'm any better)
yes ofcourse.
Goodfellas is one of my favourite movie (beside The Godfather Trilogy).
i remember when they stopped at DeVito's mother's house to collect a knife. DeVito's mother made 'em meals, chat and have some breakfast while the critically wounded Batts was still in the trunk.
upon arriving at an isolated countryside, the Conway, Hill and DeVito opened the trunk of the car, killed Batts, and buried him there. in c o u n t r y s i d e. hahahaha that's why i love countryside.
i think if the map will be as big as the one from mafia1 it will be ok. i am also interested in exploring the map verticallyi mean enter the buildings, go up to the top floor. that would be cool!
You forgot to mention the 3rd great scene... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uu-2xYwrr1U
In many clauses it will be written that city in the size to 2,5 miles and who that speaks that the city will be twice more Lost Heaven.Elizabeth has told that 10 (!) miles. To whom to trust, who will precisely explain me a situation, I have got confused!
P.S 10 miles it not seem to you that too much? With such graphics Developers will manage to work such area? I do not want that the city was dead...
Thanks for understanding![]()
i think the one you have to trust is Elizabeth she question to the developers and the developers give her the true information so i think that it will be 10 miles and i think and enshure you that the hole city will be full of life ...not for nothing the developers delayed ALMOST 5 YEARS!!OR MORE i dont know exactly but ...god the developers are crazy

A very beautiful article published about the whole city and some game missions in www.mafia2game.co.nr
Yeah, I was quite dissapointed while playing Mafia with a small city, but I think Empire City will be just fine.
I mean...you have games like True Crime and the Godfather where it takes you about five hours just to get from one side of the city to the other side....bigger doesn't always mean better.
i think that the size of Mafia 2 is good...not too big but not too small
10 sq. miles is better than the first Mafia but it still not that big. Just Cause is a lot bigger. I have it for PS2 and I think on the back cover it says over 800 sq miles. This link mentions over 1200 sq miles.![]()
http://guides.gamepressure.com/justcause/
Just dont make it to big. I personally like to get familiar with the city.
I appologize for making this comparision, but I just recently bought GTA 4, which is a pretty good game but at first, yout pretty much get frustrated because your are simply LOST in that town.
After like 30h of playtime, I still have MAJOR difficulties finding my way to given löocations without taking a closer look at the GPS system all the time.
So don't make it too big. The player's got to get right in, get himself familiar with the city over a certain period of time.
Making the city too big will get me frustrated.
By the way...... I know Lost heaven as good as own wallet

look on the thread map speculation for the map
This is an old thread but I would very much be interested in hearing an official reply to the reason of how the city eventually turned out not to be 10 square miles, not only as the information which I quote now has turned out not to be correct, but I assume there were other interviews articles that stated the same that was released after I made this thread and after you replied.
I am not attacking you Liz for this as I am well aware that you are the link between the developers and the forums and truth be told I admire your patience in moderating it under certain periods so this is not "stabbing" towards you.
Though honestly I assume and hope you understand my and I guess also other paying costumers of the game that afterall do have a valid reason to be disapointed in how some information or more the lack of it has not been revoked after it has initially been put forward as being official.
So basically what are the developers rational and honest reply to the fact that the size of the city changed so dramatically over the period between this thread and the final released product, and furthermore what are the reason that once this was fact how did they not tell us ?
The size of the city is a feature incorporated into the game and pretty much needless to say it is an essential part of it as well and I feel bad that I as a costumer have been shunned from a piece of information that have been put forward officially at one point and then eventually revoked though behind our backs and without our knowledge.
So please Liz ask them about it if you have the chance.
always assumed this was just down to optimisation & the 10sq miles might have been a goal but wasn't achievable, either that or something to lost in translation
I would like to know this as well, but it has been asked a lot already...

I don't want to beat a dead horse, but I'll agree with the reviving of this thread (one of many on this subject) because I believe there are still a few important points left to address on this topic.
The size of the city really isn't what's important to me. What's more important is, did the city feel large enough? Did the city feel populated? Was the city interesting? Were there enough unique locations? As long as the city is fun in terms of gameplay, and isn't too small, it serves its purpose, and the actual size doesn't really matter, in my opinion.
However, I kept asking about it because I like interesting facts and I'm just interested in things like measuring maps and stuff like that, especially when 2K does such a great job of creating a map for the game, giving it a real scale and putting so much effort into it.
To me, it seemed like the 2K US staff simply never measured the map themselves, and at some point, incorrect information began to be propogated and was never properly verified with 2K Czech (formerly Illusion Softworks). Denby Grace's quote from August 2009 is particularly indicative of this theory:
"The size of the world is approximately 10 square miles in size. I haven't measured it personally, but that's what I'm told..."
While I don't think the actual map size is really important, per what I wrote above, what is important to me is 2K's interaction with fans. When fans are concerned about an issue, it's important, in my opinion, for 2K to treat fans with respect and to address the question seriously.
It seems that it would be a simple thing for 2K to just go back, sit down with the map, do the math, and ask around the office how the "10 square miles" figure ever came up, when the correct figure is just over 4 square miles, less than half the "advertised" size. Because of the frequency that this question was asked and never properly answered, it would just be nice to see a simple statement acknowledging that the fans were correct and that the often-stated (on the forums and in interviews) "10 square miles" figure was incorrect.
Let's not forget that the 4 square miles figure was verified not only according to the scale of the physically printed (and shown in-game) map but also with the actual size of the gameworld according to the in-game statistics. And remember, 4 square miles is the size of the whole map. The size of the explorable city area is closer to 3 square miles.
I hardly need to post this link: http://www.bioshockarchives.com/empi...re-bay-map.php
No need for thread necromancy, guys.
