Mafia II will have a linear story

In a preview in Games Radar this can be read:

In spite of all the ridiculous levels of detail, though, Mafia II - like the original game - will focus more on telling a linear story than on open-world freedom.

For me this is good news since the story in Mafia was so interesting and complex. Those who want total freedom can go to Freeride or buy GTA IV instead.

I think most Mafia-fans agree with me on this.

    The whole preview:

Nice preview. New system of stealing cars, living city with other gangsters, police will not chase only you... It looks nice.

yep, the first game just would not work without a linear story & the sequel should be the same, the story has to come first, is what made Mafia so good.

last thing I would want is a GTA clone.

Yeah, but why the hell do these reviewers keep calling mafia a gta clone? it was in development at the same time as GTA, and it doesn't even have the same gameplay mechanics as GTA.

the devs went to a lot of trouble to say Mafia1 wasn't a GTA clone, it even got some really bad reviews because some reviewers thought it was going to be like GTA and wasn't.

comparison is inevitable given both do have similar gameplay mechanics & the setting of a living city, I always saw GTA as just cartoon mayhem, great fun but pretty shallow, Mafia on the other hand had great characters and a plot that has yet to be bettered in a game imo, it's strength was the story and attention to detail, not something that can be said of any GTA games.

not that I'm not looking forward to GTA4

Well, not exactly, GTA3 came some time before Mafia (not to mention GTA and GTA2), and there are similarities, but I do agree with you that Mafia couldn't and shouldn't be compared to GTA at any level

btw, I completely agree with Fugue

Dunno exactly, but mainly because GTA III was the first 3D free roam game, I think. But I do agree that reviewers are going too far by calling Mafia (series) a GTA clone, because it's not: Mafia (I) was launched back in the mid 2002, while GTA III was launched at the end of 2001, but considering the level of detail and story of Mafia, I'm very sure that the work at the game started around 2000, if not earlier, but no way in 2001 to think it copied GTA III!!! What can I say: big mouths, low brains this reviewers!

Journalists write phrases like "GTA clone", "Doom III based" etc. very often because they make easier their work and most casual players like it (they can imagine about what game is). They have habitude compare something with something, also in cases when it is almost uncomparable. I inured don't sense these things...

You're right, but saying these words all the time they indirectly come with the idea that those "GTA clone" and "Doom III based" games are not original as a whole, many unadviced players will believe this, so no wonder when you see an excelent game noted with 9.0 instead of 9.5, because for the originality got only 7.0.

The Mafia is more original than GTAIII, more robust storyline, GTAIII has got a poor storyline, this two games are totaly differents, yes, yes a big city like GTAIII, but no more, Mafia has better textures, a robust storyline, all in game has got personality, cars, buildings, characters, peds, music...

I dont like GTA series because the storyline is boring and its plane graphics

I don't know how somebody can say "Mafia is a GTA clone" because both games are developed at same time.

    Sorry for my bad english.

I agree Mafia 2 should have a linear story. Furthermore I hope they won't make any major changes in the gameplay; I wish they'll stick to the original game because I consider Mafia 1 to be the perfect game. Like someone on the forum was saying, the first game was like a movie, and a good one... and having multiple endings and other fancy stuff will ruin the story.

Don't want a GTA clone.. no sir..

from the released info it looks like the only "major" change to the gameplay will be the cover system, which I welcome.

as said elsewhere I dont have a problem with multiple/alternate endings, if you can chose a different path at sertain points in the game it makes sense, and adds to the replay value.

GTA III wasnt the first that type 3D game. Driver was, and it was released waayyy before, about 2000. Before GTA III, everybody tought that it's gonna be a driver clone, but when GTA was released they forget driver absolutely.
