Please help...nv4_disp.dll problem???

Has anyone else heard of a problem with BioShock and nv4_disp.dll nvidia file??

Every time I attemt to play this game, it locks up, I get a blue screen that says nv4_disp.dll has caught itself in an infinite loop, or something like that. What's going on? My system is extremely qualified to run this game, here are my specs:

-Core 2 Quad 6600
-4 gigs PC2 6400 RAM
-Windows XP Pro
-DUAL Nvidia 8800 GT in SLI config

What on earth is going on with this? Thanks for your help, and I hope I am not the only one.

That's usually a driver issue. Completely uninstall and reinstall the latest nvidia drivers. You can also use Driver Cleaner Pro to help remove all the leftover bits and pieces before you reinstall.

I've also seen that error come up on machines where the videocard itself is bad.

Thank you for the reply. I do not think it is a driver or hardware issue considering I have no issues running Crysis at maximum resolution with high detail. Any other ideas?

Just an FYI, driver support varies from game to game, so just because one game runs fine has no bearing whatsoever on how it runs another game. Which version of driver are you using? The very fact that it names the dll means that it is a driver issue (whether that issue be software or hardware related is what we're trying to figure out.) The dll IS a driver

My driver version is 169.21

And until I had posted that, I was using Crysis error free, now I get the error, but it lets me play a lot longer than BioShock, I can only get about 5 minutes from BioShock.

What if you disable SLI? Also did you try reinstalling the Nvidia drivers?

I did a reinstall of the drivers, nothing changed.

At first I was only running 1 8800, I installed the other today hoping I could suffocate the problem with GPU processing power, it didn't work.

What would turning off SLI do for me?

Some games that would run perfectly fine with one GPU have issues with SLI (or Crossfire with Ati). Since you recently added another card, it may also be a heat related issue. Maybe you could run your computer a bit without the cover on the side and for a bonus maybe point a regular fan into the case and with this covering heat issues see if the stability of your system improves. If it is a heat issue then you can look at getting a more powerful case fan for your system - but do try to run it with the side off and a fan assist to provide more certainty that it is a heat issue.

Edit: Also does your power supply have enough wattage to power both cards in addition to the rest of the system? Borderline power supply can also cause issues.

The computer itself is brand new, Dell XPS 630. It has a several fans, and shows absolutely no signs of overheating. The fans are set to increase their speed based on temperatures in the case and the fans have not accelerated while playing either game.

My power supply is 750w. Plenty of juice.

My only thought now is to pull out the original card and use the one I bought alone to see if BioShock runs properly. If it runs correctly on the one I installed, that would mean it is a hardware issue, right?

I'd try running BS on each card separately. If you get the error with one of the cards and not the other, then yes, it would mean that one of the cards is bad and needs to be replaced. As I mentioned in my first post, I have seen this error before on machines with a bad videocard.

Thank you all for your help. I ended up being able to run BS just fine on the second card I bought, just got off of the phone with Dell's tech support guys and happily they are sending a new card out to me tomorrow.

I'm extremely impressed with the quality of their XPS technicians, they alone make it worth buying this system.
