Integrated Video and Voice Chat Question ?

Will this feature be utilizing the Playstation Eye on the PS3 ?

We do not support video chat on PS3. Audio chat is supported via headsets, but video chat is not.

    Blame GameSpy. It's their technology.

Wow, that is very disappointing. I am really tired of 360 people getting preferential treatment. I have made it a point not to buy games that come out on xbox before PS3 and also not to buy games that showed preference towards the xbox by including special features not found on PS3. I was very excited because I thought I had finally found something useful to do with my Playstation Eye. This makes me want to throw up.

Sorry? Like I said, it's not our call. We license GameSpy for multiplayer, and they don't support the PlayStation Eye.

If you want better support for that sort of thing on PS3, complain to Sony. They don't offer the kind of universal voice/video chat support that Microsoft does.

I don't know of any games that use the PlayStation Eye for in-game video chat.

Is Gamespy the only choice for you as a developer then?

While I don't know at all about the decisions made on the development side about this, I do know at this point, Gamespy is the only developer.

I want to remind everyone that this game is as console agnostic as possible. We do not prefer any system, and only change the game to tailor it to each system's needs. For example, we would have loved to put 3D graphics on the DS, but it worked much better to have the game 2D, because of the platform. Likewise, in an ideal world we'd love to use a camera for the Playstation, but sadly, it is not supported by Sony like Microsoft supports their camera.

    Cool RE:

Well I am still going to buy this game just because I know the gameplay will be amazing. J2K, the PSN title High Stakes Poker added video chat today. So, I am hoping that maybe Civ: Rev might do the same at some point. Strange that Sony doesn't support their own peripheral. I am definitely going to complain to them.

Maybe you should complain to Gamespy and not Sony. Jason will have to back me up on this...

Rather than Take Two purchasing and administrating it's own servers for CivRev multiplayer, the company leases them from Gamespy. Gamespy already supports XBL video, but does not have the resources or licence to allow video over PSN.

Sony could add add video support to High Stakes on Vegas Strip Poker because it's published by Sony Online Entertainment. You can bet they have their own multiplayer servers (they also did MMO's like Everquest).

It's too bad that dumb company politics are preventing the PS3 version of the game from using the Eye. Luckily, I have a 360, and will be buying an Xbox Vision camera just for this game. When the game launches, you'll see me in the leaderboard screen. I'll be the guy dressed in a period-accurate Abraham Lincoln costume.

We're not leasing servers or anything from GameSpy, it's just for the server browsing and communication support.

On 360, video chat is built-in to the system, along with audio chat. On PS3 sony provides squat. I'm sure eventually GameSpy will support video chat, but it won't be in time for us to utilize it with CivRev.
