Dr. Steinman and the plastic surgery stuff

Ok, I understand the whole plot of BioShock and the story behind Rapture. However, what is the relevance/purpose of the whole Dr.Steinman/plastic surgery thing towards the beginning of the game. I only ask becasue that whole section creeped the hell out of me and I thought it was really cool. I just missed what it had to do with the main plot. Can someone halp me out?

    Aesthetics are a Moral Imperitive!

The whole Medical Pavilion in general wasn't necessarily plot, but it gave the player a good feel of how ADAM changed society. Doctors(like Steinman) could now do procedures they only dreamed of before, things like completely modifying the human body to "perfection". Steinman in particular became focused on this, almost to the brink of insanity (you'll notice him constantly talking to "Aphrodite" ), where he began mutilating his patients. If you listen to the Audio Diary after fighting him (Not What She Wanted: it's in the corpse he was "working" on), that should pretty much sum up what he was going through.

Hey thanks for replying, but im still a little confused:

    1) I dont think i picked up that tape recorder, mind summerizing it for me?

    2) What did the ADAM have to do with plastic surgery, i thought it just gave people those special plasmid abilities

I'm trying to remember the guys name, but the man that designed Steinman's area also did Sander Cohen's area. Both of those two characters and their repsective section of Rapture were somewhat removed from the main plot of the game, each almost acting as a seperate story in their own right. Those two levels were probably also the two most well designed levels in the game, and they were distinctly seperate from the Andrew Ryan/Atlas/Fontaine aspect.

Hopefully that guy designs most of the levels in the next game!

EDIT: And the ADAM allowed them to genetically modify themselves to become beautiful.

Well obviously ADAM does more to people then just make them beautiful, and it seems like Dr. Steinman was having problems with that. Hence his whole crazy (and creepy) tangent about "too fat, too tall, too symetrical"

CAN ANYONE SUMMERIZE THE TAPE THAT I APPRENTLY MISSED BY THE DEAD GIRL AFTER BEATING STEINMAN? I heard it is called "NOT WHAT SHE WANTED"

I don't think it was ever revealed exactly how the use of ADAM actually made people more beautiful, but after listening to Audio-Diary #4 "Adam's Changes" again, I got kind of an idea of what happened:

    Steinman - Adam's Changes

"Ryan and Adam, Adam and Ryan... all those years of study, and was I ever
truly a surgeon before I met them? How we plinked away with our
scalpels and toy morality. Yes, we could lop a boil here, and shave down
a beak there, but... but could we really change anything? No. But Adam
gives us the means to do it. And Ryan frees us from the phony ethics
that held us back. Change your look, change your sex, change your race.
It's yours to change, nobody else's."
Plus, he was obsessed with perfection (if you haven't seen PERFECTION written everywhere already...)

    Steinman - Aphrodite Waking

"Aphrodite is walking the halls - shimmering, like a scalpel...
'Steinman,' she calls, 'Steinman! I have what you're looking for! Just
open your eyes!' And when I see her, she cuts into me a thousand
    beautiful pieces."

I wonder if the Steinman character was influenced by Dr George Hodel? The prime suspect in the Black Dahlia case, the murder of Elizabeth Short 1947.

    A 1940's psychopathic surgeon with a mustasch.

    How Steinman Works

Adam replaces regular cells with stem cells that can grow to become any cell necessary, and manipulation of which allows for any genetic variance. Like plastic surgery using maliable "real" tissue.

Dude just play the game and listen to the audio's carefull EVERYTHING is explained. Also Atlas explains a lot when you roam through the area's.

Adam replaces your genetic cells with a stem-cell version which can be modded, altereded, edited through the use of plasmids and genetonics. I would like to say more about it but it's nicer for you to find the audio's and find out yourself!

Adam is the canavas but the plasmids are the paint.

I have a suspicion that you start on a medical ward in Bioshock because thats where you started in System Shock 2... They are more than enough similar for it to be plausible.
