Where's the Little Sister??

Hi everyone, Just killed my first Big Daddy on Hard which took many attempts. When I eventually killed him there was no little sister anywhere. Now a few minutes later, another big daddy appeared with another or the same little sister.
Does this mean that you have to find the little sister, after you have killed the big daddy, within a certain time or she finds a new big daddy to protect her??
BTW the exit screen shows that there is one little sister left on this level the same as before I killed the Big Daddy.

Actually, I've questioned this as well. Ever since I restarted the game from Fort Frolic to make it a HARD difficulty all the way though, I always pressed F8 for quicksave before big daddies, I don't bother killing them unless theres a sister there. So...I saw one, and I died probably like 4 times to kill him? Then...the sister isn't even there! I experimented this for around 30 mins and came to this conclusion: You know those little circle things that the sisters go in after their rescued? Keep the daddies away from those, because apparently after a given time they'll go by one and the sister will go in, I've never seen this happen, but it must've been like that. So just make sure the daddy gets lured close to a vita-chamber or just keep running to him and make note of all the spots with the little circles.

Before I go on the war path and take on the Big Daddy quickly do a circle of him if there is a little sister take him out but if you look before attack and there is no LS then let him be and follow him till he goes to a wall and gets one...then attack

I'm pretty sure there was a LS with the BD at the time. Oh well have gone back and will try again.

I didn't realize they lived in the vents at the time.

The little sisters can run away and hide. If you can't find them than i guess your out of luck. If theres not one there just look around a bit.
