Great Videogame Moments! (spoilers across the board)

    Hey Guys!

What are the moments in games youve played that have really made you sit up and take notice..those awe inspiring occassions that make you go..OMF..THIS IS AWESOME!

I recently completed Call of Juarez for 360....in one section youve got to climb an entire freaking mountain!..my heart was in my mouth the entire time!

Meh. Original Half-Life. Surface Tension. Crawling down a pipe, you turn a corner, see the opening, and as you get closer, you see an F-15 fly past. You emerge from the pipe to find yourself on the face of a cliff, above a sheer drop.

Then follows a rather tightrope mountain-climbing session, with soldiers and turrets trying to take you out from both above and below, plus a shootout with a chopper.

Sure nice to see new games so liberally borrowing from the great moments of the classics, but would be nice to see something really original.

Call of Duty 2, in the Russian Campaign when you were crawling through the pipe and all the germans were below you, and you could actually look down through holes to see them, sometimes one would here you and they would shoot ahead of you. You couldn't shoot back 'cause there were about 10 guys in each group you passed by.

This is embarrassing, but one of my favorites was the ending of Under A Killing Moon:
    http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...n_FrontBox.jpg

You know how there are those ending sequences where something is counting down and you're panicking and you nearly accomplish it, but BOOM - the space station explodes. Then you load and try, try, try again. When you finally get through it you're happy for having done it, but eh...

Well in Under A Killing Moon the counter was counting down, the space station was about to explode, I had to do something to some kind of doo dads to get the hell off -- and I DID IT! One try! In the nick of time I launched out of that thing and watched it explode behind me with the main character letting out a whoop of joy.

That was so much more satisfying than dying and loading a hundred times before a satisfying ending experience that I still have a fondness for that memory.

Terra Nova - Strike Force Centauri had several awesome moments.
Most had something to do with power armor jump jets.
Or bombing runs in Terminal Velocity, coming vertically out of the clouds.

    Also, Stalker had great moments.
Fighting tooth and nails against a huge group of bandits in the beginning hours of the game to score my first AK47. Now THAT was satisfying. Involved hand grenades and lots of running for cover. Well, and a lot of dead bandits when I was finished.

Resident Evil games esp #4 have some great moments.

and the Shodan plot twist in SS2 of course. Honestly, that was my most "holy sh*t" moment ever, I was totally floored, in a good way!

mgs1 when you kill gray wolf. that was saaaaaad.

finally, i was just a kid so this will sound slightly childish, but i peed my pants out of joy (can that happen?) when cloud was driving up the stairs on his motor cycle in FFVII, just thought that was so cool.

I'll post my reminiscent moments when I have some more time, there's so many. But to respond to CoJ specifically, I would say the carriage chase level was awesome and kept an excellent tempo whilst not being completely linear, as Ray had to find alternate dangerous paths to keep up the chase.

For me in COJ it was when Rev. Ray rolls up with a mini gun and when your in the lighting with billy.

Greatest moment so far has to be from the Darkness when Jenny

    **SPLOILER PEOPLE*****

gets killed with Jackie unable to do anything. Their whole relationship has really made the game standout for me even through the very unstable framerates.

Of all time though? Has to be either Dog tossing Gordon and Alyx through the citadel in that car in Episode One or In the Xbox game Breakdown where the heroine Alex and you bungee jump off of a building when a missile touches down.

I was about to say the same thing. Emerging from the Vortex Rikers into Na Pali was just like when Dorothy first stepped out of her crashed black&white house into the brilliantly coloured land of Oz.

Unreal broke much new ground in graphics, audio, environment design and AI. I've never found another game that lets the player or the enemy AI feign death.

Trivia: Level designer T. Eliot Cannon (aka Myscha the Sled Dog; now Sr Designer at Crytek) was a big fan of Ayn Rand and named Unreal's Kira after the main protagonist from Rand's We the Living.

I added a caveat to the title of this thread. This thread is a hidden powderkeg of spoilers

Keep in the back of your mind hiding spoilers as members here may not have played the games you're citing.

I think mine was the abduction scene from prey when the aliens roll in and tear the bar apart. Also ravenholm from half life 2 was incredibly intense.

    Amen to that!

When I first learnt about Bioshock!

Halo 2, when I rode a ghost of a building and landed on the Scarab. (while not knowing I was supposed to)

Saints Row Demo, I was able to get across the demo Barrier.

Getting keys to the city in crackdown.

Well, great moments can happen by chance or by design.

My most memorable moment that happened by chance was probably in IL2 Sturmovik when I was the lone, shot-up survivor of my Messerschmitt squadron being pursued by three angry Soviet Lavochkins. I dove from 3000 meters and then used my slight weight advantage to level off slightly faster than my pursuers could, sending them into the hillside. Glorious!

I can think of at least 3 great moments resulting from great game design and all 3 are from Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines.

    - When the player first meets with both Therese and Jeanette, together in the same room arguing. The insanity of the moment was further underscored by that huge spooky portrait in the background showing the *cough* two of them as children standing with their father.

    - When the player runs into Samantha, a close friend, on a street in Hollywood, but must convince her that she has the wrong person. It struck me as emotionally powerful to give the player a brief glimpse at what the life of player's character was like before becoming a vampire. And as caught up in the game's plot as the player was, it was saddening that your character couldn't ease the worries of loved ones left behind in your former life.

    - When the player must elude and figure out how to kill the lightning-quick and nearly indestructable werewolf chasing you all over the Griffith Park Observatory. Talk about sweaty palms.

Reading a scan of the review for BioShock.

Playing the demo of Crackdown... Fun with a capital F.

The various times after I got my 360 when I wasn't depressed over not having an HDTV.

    And for the future...
Coming home after getting BioShock and putting it in my 360,
And getting a 5.1 surround sound system,
    And an HDTV.

Call of Duty one. The Stalingrad levels in the Russian campaign. Charging with hundreds of comrades straight into certain death was absolutely hardcore.

Half Life 2- The ENTIRE freaking game was jaw dropping, particularly
    -crossing the bridge
    -stepping off the train
    -Meeting DOG
    -Just about every single chapter

AVP2- Evolving my Alien by scurrying into a cage with cats in it. hehe

STALKER- The intense atmosphere and loneliness

zooming in on one of the hero characters in Dawn of War and seeing them perfom a finishing move (who cares if it was only in low def)

I loved DOW, it was nice to see such a great spin on the genre as well as the great 40K mythos.

On normal difficulty I would always drop grenades out of the pipe for fun, needless to say when I tried that on veteran...

Totally, although I must add: Stepping out of the train station in the beginning of hl2, (that was a big wtf for me)
Looking at the first strider you fight, that whole portion where you're on the roof top fighting off soldiers and striders (I think there was a gunship too), and watching dog massacre a group of soldiers with an apc

Oh, and the last line from Halo 2 "Sir, finishing this fight" makes my skin tingly!

The warthog run at the end of Halo and your first oblivion gate in oblivion.
Oh and the giant dinosaur skeleton in Ninja Gaiden.
