Since you have an AMD Dual-Core, did you install the timing fix on the Bioshock DVD? (it's in the 'amd dual core timing fix' folder). Also see here for how someone else fixed this problem (I don't know how he managed to make his save-game folder read-only in the first place but...) and in that link is also an autosave for the Farmers Market I uploaded.

location may vary, but: explore to c:\docs and settings\"current user"\appdata\bioshock, right click on save games, choose properties, unselect readonly attrib. i checked mine, and it was readonly as well, and i sure as hell didn't set it to that. maybe the game sets that attribute dynamically as it needs to....

Did unchecking read-only fix it for you by the way? It would be nice to know in case someone else has a similar problem! Thanks.

i went to my save game folder and unchecked read only box, pressed the apply button and ok....but when i recheck the folder it its still on? i have tried a few times with the same result? so how do i turn off read-only and keep it off? i checked other folders and files too, they also have the read only box checked. any ideas?

the save game folder read-only box has a green square in it, and the subfolder autosave is the same. the individual save files in that have the read only unchecked. i wonder if the folders above are restricting the access?

We might be on a wild-goose-chase here, check out this page: Microsoft KB 812003, specifically where it says: "Special folders (such as hard disk folders, CD/DVD disc folders, Program Files, My Documents, My Pictures, My Music, your Windows folder, Fonts, Downloaded Program Files, and other similar folders) have their default appearances set by Windows. Therefore, you may not be able to customize special folders.". Bioshock saves are within the "special folders" - My Documents on Windows XP.

Also when the read-only box is _green_ it's supposed to mean that some items in the folder are read-only, while _checked_ means true-read-only. So read-only should only cause difficulties if the save-game-files (especially Autosave.bsb) have a _check_ in their read-only attribute.

So this posts "solution" may have actually been solved some other way.

Sorry, forgot to mention I "unchecked" the green read-only box for my Bioshock savegame folder and looked at the properties again and it was green again. I also am not experiencing difficulties with saving or loading in Bioshock.

Which version of Windows do you have Farny?

If you have Vista have you tried disabling UAC from within control panel > User Accounts?

Also if possible try running the program as administrator.

Have you tried to turn off high-detail shaders? From the main-menu go to Options then Graphics Options and you will see the setting.

no luck, i turned everything to lowest settings. i have not played for about a week or so, wish i could get around this. i see some other people had this trouble too. looks like turning off the read only option fixed it.? but no luck for me so far. i go into my c\documents and settings\my username\application data\bioshock \savegames and try turn off the read only box which is filled green. for all files and subfolders within. but the box stays on still. but i notice the save files within are unchecked.

Ok, do you know the model of your motherboard? We can see if it's drivers need updating. And is your sound card driver the latest version? Check here. Once these drivers are current we can try again.

Ok, this page appears to be it. I'd recommend getting the latest chipset drivers, and the AMD Cool 'n Quiet update. There are BIOS updates on that page as well, IF you decide to install a BIOS update check the dates on the right side of the screen to make sure you get the latest version. Only update your BIOS if you are sure you know how to do it! A bad BIOS update can leave your computer needing to go to a shop for repairs.

Also since it's an Asus motherboard there is probably an option called PEG Link in the BIOS, try setting it to 'Slow' (which turns it off). PEG Link is a small overclock of your PCIX bus so that can be a source of system crashes.

    Talking

    IT WORKED!
but it was not the updated drivers?
    it still crashed with those.
i went into start button ,my documents, the hidden bioshock folder, the savegames folder and removed all the files except the quicksave. then i loaded the game and it worked!!!
looks like the autosave file i cut from the save folder was corrupt? or something? not sure, but it loaded the farmers market so thats great

actualy, i compared the two autosave files. there is one i cut to desktop is called autosave.bsh.......and it does not have the bioshock symbol the other save files have. so i think it was that file that was the cause of the save crash. i'll test more and let you know. hope this helps others, and thank you for your help and advice everyone. especialy headkase.
i'll experiment more and let ya know.

We are glad you have got it working.. It seems that most likely it was a corrupted file that had originally caused the issue.
