Bioshock Crashes when Loading a Saved Game

    Hey all,

I was able to run this game for quite some time after I bought it off of steam, but now everytime I load a saved game I get the message "This program has encountered a problem and needs to close". I can launch the game and browse the in-game menus without any problems but whenever I load a saved game it crashes to the desktop. I tried a few things to try to get it to work, and when I disabled my soundcard in the device manager it ran without any crashes. So I'm trying to figure now how to run the game with my soundcard enabled without any crashes. I have the latest drivers for my video card, sound card, and motherboard.

Can anyone help or have the same issue with this soundcard and Bioshock?

    Specs:
    Geforce 7800 GTX 256mb
    Athlong FX-55 2.6ghz
    1 gb Corsiar Ram
    SIIG Soundwave 7.1 PCI
Wester Digital Sata hard drive 7200 RPM
    Windows XP

Make sure that you have the latest sound card drivers from the manufacturers website.

Also try to download and install the latest Direct X update from the link below.

I already have the latest verison of directx and the latest soundcard drivers.

I tried messing around with EAX and either enabled or disabled it still crashes, I tried disabling AVG, I've tried ending all programs expect steam and explorer, I installed the latest Nvidia drivers (163.71), but still with no luck.

The only thing thats worked so far is disabling the sound card. I can't think of anything else to do to get it to work expect play with no sound, use my onboard audio card or wait for the patch.

Right click on the game shortcut on the desktop and choose properties.
    Then choose the "Compatibility" tab.
Check the box labeled "Run this program in compatibility mode for".
from the drop down menu please choose "Windows XP SP2".
    Now apply the changes.
Right click on the shortcut for the game again and choose to run as admin.

If you do not have a shortcut on the desktop, navigate to the following and right click on the Bioshock.exe file.

    Local Drive C:/Program Files/2K Games/Bioshock/Builds/Release

Ok for some odd reason under the bioshock.exe/compatibility theres no option to run under Windows XP SP2. Theres Windows 95, Windows 98/WIndows ME, Windows NT 4.0 (Service Pack 5), and Windows 2000 but no Windows XP

Sorry i didnt see that you were using XP, You would only be able to change the compatibility mode to XP SP2 in Vista.

Just to confirm it is the Steam version of the game you have.

Please post your system specs and driver versions for your graphics and sound card.

Also please post anything that you have already tried.

ive been having this problem aswell but ive found away to play the game neway.

If you ALT+TAB back to the desktop when the game starts loading (before it starts to crash) then you wait for a while unitll it loads up, I usually wait untill i hear the sound effects change, then open the window back up it should be in the game.

I have found that its had a tendancy to stutter alot and crash when you do it like this but its better than nothing.

Hope this helps ne1 while they wait for the patch to come out.

I was browsing the forums and found something I hadn't tried yet, disabling the high detail shaders.

It fixed the crashing issue I was having and I can load my saved games, however the graphics quality does suffer somewhat.

So anyone having a similiar problem should give it a try, it worked for me.

And I'm hoping this will be fixed when the patch finally comes out.
