    Who is the main character?

I apologize if there is a thread like this on some other page, I was just eager to put this out there. Who is the main character that we play? One of my ideas is that he was in WWII possibly and later on that somehow ties into the mysteries of Rapture. Furthermore where do you guys think he was coming from and where was he heading to (aboard the plane that crashed)? I dunno, guess I thought it would be cool to start a topic like this and see what everyone thought. So go ahead, input/ideas are fully welcomed and appreciated. And again sorry if a thread about the same topic has already been made.

I think the game is purposely ambiguous about the main characters identity.

My guess is that you will never know because its "you"... but I could be wrong.

Yeah that makes perfect sense, I never really saw it that way. But either way would fine to me. If it is 'you' then it would sort of fit in with the emphasis on your personal choices and stuff. But there could still be a cool back story to the character as well which we would be equally cool.

suprisingly enough, for this specific game I don't want my charactor to have a back story. I want to think it is me as much as possible (not because I enjoy physicaly abusing myself, just the immersion factor).

If the whole idea of 'you' is not going to be the character's background, I'm wondering if they will at some point through the game elaborate on where the character was heading and why. In any case it wouldn't have much to do with Rapture, but you never know.

But yeah, I agree with you guys at this point, I would actually want it more to be an experience just based on yourself. I think you'll be immersed enough to not really care who your character is and instead be swept up in the mysteries of Rapture.

Well, I was thinking I was on a cross atlantic flight to Europe to visit relatives when the plane crashed. I don't really like the ideas other people have suggesting of you being some sort of government spy. If that were the case, I'm sure we would already know by now.

Being a regular person just flying to see your relatives would be pretty interesting actually because you're just a normal person who is in a situation of being submerged deep underwater in utopia-gone-bad. Would be far better having someone who has no special skills and has to go through Rapture confused and unsure of how to handle situations whereas a spy would have some knowledge as towards how to survive and blah blah. Gives you a stronger feeling that 'you' are actually playing the game.

Exactly. Being nondescript in backround makes you think the way you would really do in real life. In Halo, would you do the same things in real life? Probably not as much. Even if the difference is small, I like how it adds to the gameplay.

Well, personally, I don't like not having backstories and Identities. I understand the concept and goal of want to make the character be blank, so that you can be him, and make the experiance yours, but frankly, I don't feel it works. I mean, Zelda isn't a great example, but the lack of voices for me and other characters drives me insane. The same with Half Life, crackdown.
Again, not really good examples, but I think background information and identities = more story, and more story is ALWAYS good.

Anyway, as to why I think I was on the plane:

I think I was on the plane because I KNEW/Planned for it to crash.
I mean, I think that a plane crash (Supposedly a rare event) and it happening near a lighthouse in the middle of nowhere, which just happens to lead to a underwater city, is alot of coincidences.

So yea. I think it was planned.

The whole planned thing is a nice concept. Whether you it planned yourself (but somehow it ended up rather differently in your head compared to reality - because I'm sure getting stuck in Rapture isn't intentional) or whether the someone else planned it is also a neat thought. Great replies guys, keep em' coming.

there is also the issue of how he survived the plane crash... witch could mean that it was indeed planned somehow. we wont know till we play the game

Perhaps there was another survivor who regained consciousness and somehow got to land to report the crash or something, in which case someone came to investigate the incident, but I doubt they would discover Rapture...I'm thinking it's deeeep under.

like stated above, we won't know until we play the game, and sadly for me, my arguing won't change the game lol

so we'll hope for the best

now what WOULD be interesting is that Atlas somehow planned your 'accidenta' arival. Not for you specificaly, but for that plane to crash so he could lure someone down to rapture to save him and his family

Here's my plan for the main character's identity (subject to change without notice).

    First playthrough: Mike Hammer
    Second playthrough: W. C. Fields
Third playthrough: J. R. "Bob" Dobbs

Taking into account the rarity of plane crashes the fact it goes down near the lighthouse isn't too surprising in my mind, out with the lighthouse actually being there in the first place that is.

Think about it from the pilots point of view. Say for example the reason for the plane going down was an on board fire (not actually sure what the cause was so this is an assumption on my part unless it's been posted elsewhere and I just don't remember). If I were flying and had to make, what I thought, was an emergency landing I'd be looking out through the cockpit (who named this really?!) windows and "hold on, there’s a light!" ... I dunno bout you but I'd head for it.

It would explain, though, how he is able to survive so well. he seems sort of adapted to killing.

It's even possible that the plane crash was caused by Rapture itself; given the state of science in Rapture, it could have some pretty potent defense systems, and with the situation in Rapture degenerating, those systems might do anything.

Someone looking to escape Rapture might even shoot down a plane deliberately, just to get the outside world's attention.

no, that's how the main charactor holds his hands when he's using a plasmid

hey if i were stuck in rapture i can guarantee you i would nail everything that moves except for (maybe) the little sisters and friendly NCPs.

The guys proficientcy with guns is not amazing. If he was nailing people from 500 yards away then I would have a problem. Most of the games battles are in CQB anyways so you wouldnt have to be a great marksman.

Andrew Ryan's clone that he sent to the surface to analyze the world outside of Rapture. Naw...probably not, but that would be really cool.

Also, like someone said, the fact that your the sole surviver, its just all to coincidental.

From that CGI trailer, it shows the MC for a few seconds.
