Nobody complained about SS2's health bar, and as far as realism goes er...your fighting mutants in an underwater city, it's not a particularily realistic setting in the first place.
Has it crossed anyone's mind that perhaps in Bioshock, a game based on PLASMID POWERS, that perhaps the health bar above enemies is a PLASMID POWER, and not just a free feature that shows up without any explanation whatsoever?
Everything that we've heard so far tells us that there will be an story/explanation behind every feature in the game. This feature is most likely optional, not mandatory.
I took a pic of the box that pops up when he is hacking the turret (around 1:45-1:50)and it does show that he has a plasmid activated but he also has lots of credits so he might just be overrideing it.

I would like to add to the HATE chorus! *siiiiiiiiiing*
I don't need some big arsed bar to tell me when they're gonna die. They'll die when I pump enough lead into them, that's when they'll die!
Let me be stressed. Let me worry. Let there be some mystery.
(Actually, on the boards for GTA IV I am a strong proponent of hyper-realism and I hope R* takes a very realistic approach for the new one. Because of this I have been espousing a desire for NO HUD AT ALL. Want to know how many bullets you have? Check the clip. Want to know how much money you have? Check your wallet. Want to know where you are? Look at a cell phone GPS or a map. Street name? Check a street sign. How much health do you have? Well, are you bleeding? How about stumbling around? I'd say it's time to go to a hospital.
Having said that, I don't have the same hyper-realistic expectations for Bioshock though. I mean, come on. So I'm basically happy with the HUD elements so far. What I do expect is pure, unadulterated fun! Well that, and no enemy health bars. Grrrr!)
Note: In addition to agreeing with the above long-winded dude about HATE for the bars, I also am long-winded and apologize to all! Luckily I'm a speed reader/typer.
p.s. that video was awesome.
Righhht so I suppose if your in a firefight and want to know how many bullets you've got left, he's gonna have to take all the bullets out, count them and put them back in the clip.
Not gonna happen, the last game that did something like that was tresspasser, "clip feels about half-full" (shudders) that is the last experience I want to repeat.![]()
I noticed a couple of things about the video. I thought it was confirmed that when an enemy is killed by being shattered once they are frozen, you can't loot their bodies and get the goodies from them but in the video it cleary shows the goodies falling not to far from the splicer once you shatter him.
and when the guy set oil pools on fire, didn't it look really jolty to you?
Also, I thought the ice plasmid was called Winter Blast? The video had it as Cryo Shards.
And the Little Sisters voice has gone back to that scratchy voice she had in the 14 minute video.
You ever been in a firefight? (No, I haven't either.) But I assume that unless you are counting in your head, you don't know how many bullets you have left.
And if you are hiding behind a car or something, sure, you could check - but I wouldn't recommend it. I'd just keep firing till you hear *click* and hope it isn't at a bad time.

Other notes on the video:
Health bar freezes over - cute!
Particle effects when the box was shot with machine gun - cool.
I have no doubt you would lose count of your bullets, all I'm saying is that doesn't make for a fun game, I love immersion just as much you seem too. I just don't think it would be a good idea for this game. However having re-read your post it seems you were arguing that GTA IV should be more realistic and not Bioshock, so I must apologise for taking this out of hand.
I personally don't mind the health bar but regret that they didn't make a little less overt.
Actually, yeah, I'm agreeing with people here, I do hope you can turn the health bar off, I like it, I just won't like it all the time.
Good eyeballs!
#1.
I didn't see stuff actually fall out, but it did look like it was giving him a button option to get something? Yeah, I thought stuff was destroyed too. I'll check that part again.
#2. Yes, it seemed like he set the pool on fire and then BOOM there was a burning splicer on the opposite end already dead; you didn't even see him walk into it. I just assumed it was an editing glitch or something.
#3. I love the name 'Cryo Shards' way better than Winter Blast. However, the Bioshock website and cultofrapture downloads are both recently using the name Winter Blast.)

#3. It sounded like the original little sister to me! I'm glad to know she's still in it. Perhaps there are different voices.
hey, didnt someone on these forums say they liked cryoshards? i think someone here made it up and the devs saw it.
I think LordLeckie made it up.
Hm... now I'm almost certain that the health bar will be optional, just as the arrow is, think way back (actually not that far back at all :P) to the 17 minute video. The designer (I think) played through a section in a garden, and there was no health bar (but there was an arrow, which wasn't on the new video) over the people, from this and the new video, I think it will be completely optional.
yea, i remember somebody came up with the name cryoshards not too long ago. people were mad at the name "Winter Blast," and somebody was like well let's make a compromise and suggested "Winter Shards" and then somebody said they liked "Cryo Blast," and then somebody said "how about Cryo Shards." -and look what the new name is eh? haha.
i thought she said "I'm a good girl now"
are you guys talking about 3 ways to clear a room? it's a cool vid if I ever saw one
but the splashing mud was kinda sub par (halo 1 level graphics o.O)
but you can't ever rely on just these dumb internet video players
ok, maybe not that bad, but upon watching it again, the freezing plasmid effect on your hand looks really nice!
also, some of the first person animations (very beggining) with the pistol look a little tincey wincey bit choppy, but not that big of a deal
but yeah, very exciting video
Haven't watched the video yet (15 minutes to go), but I will say this about the HUD issue; I like Tomb Raider's. It's clean, simple, and only appears when you're in combat, or use a medkit.
I think Bx would do well going down the same route. Ammo, health, and eve only appear when you're using them (or taking damage). Perhaps you could also have the crosshair only come on when you shoot.
As for enemy health bars, I can both side of the issue, and personally it doesn't really bother me either way. What I think would be a good answer is giving players the choice, but giving it to them in-game with a Combat Awareness tonic.
I think Cryo Shards used to be the name, and now it's Winter Blast. Remember that this video could have been recorded months ago, and some things may have still changed since then.
Absolutely, I agree. When I heard it, I thought to myself . . . damn, it's really going to be hard to exploit the little sisters if they keep saying stuff like that. You're really going to feel like a monster if you hurt them.![]()
Which is why, it sure would be LOST-worthy trickerynessness if ol Ken Levine got us caring for them and protecting them and at the end the now 'fixed' girls reign down hell upon you in vent-land and make chum out of your sympathetic hide.
To this day I shudder at the very mention of her name, but ken's friend Ayn Rand was the absolute QUEEN of justifying selfishness for libertarians, free marketeers, and conservative corporate a-holes everywhere don't-cha-know?
Hmmm...
Hope it goes on XBL marketplace!![]()
When I came to these forums, my interest in Bioshock was mostly in exploring the atmospheric old-timey/underwater setting. But with each new video this game looks more and more like it'll be a blast to play!
That'll probably sum up my tour through Bioshock - come into a room with guns blazing and get owned, but notice something that I can use on a stealthier second try. I love the fact that you can reset traps. You turn the Little Sisters into what they once were? What do you do, on the spot GI replacement? Hit her with a "Fix Little Sister" plasmid? Use her stock of Adam to fix her instead of keeping it yourself? I don't think I can bring myself to waste the Little Sisters; I had a hard enough time playing the Alien campaign on AVPII.
I don't like splicer's melee skills... they kinda suck. Well at least by looking at all the videos it seems that you can always dodge their melee attacks... I hope they are not so easy to dodge, cause it almost seems funny the way they jump at you trying to hit you so slowly, and the player just moves a little and the splicer misses... Anyway I suppose playing the game will be a whole different story.
but yeah, like someone already stated
this video is probably several months old
when [game disign] teams work on their games, they'll make the video ahead of time, so when they are at a stage that they think they can revial the information in said video, it will already be done and they won't have to waste more time and resources then, and they also keep you guessing!
