This is exactly what I’ve been waiting for, showcase of the different play styles

Moving/reorganizing booby traps are a nice touch, as is the prox mines showing their detection diameter. Touches of assistance that are not dumbing-down anything.

But why is the vaunted AI walking straight into pools of fire, engulfing themselves? They certainly had time to glimpse the fire out of the side of their eyes

So, what have we learned? There are blond little sister, there is a health bar for your enemies (which gets frozen over... HA! nice touch), There are trip wires and proximity mines, there are electrical wires, you can easily move trip wires...
    Nice vid!

what did the guy have equiped to bypass hacking the turret? and did they have some cheat on so that the guy wouldn't loose health? because when ken told the guy to get out of there on his first time through because he's getting killed, he wasn't really getting killed, so i'm lost there.

There's also an origins video at gametrailers. But this one's better. I just hope the PC version will really look differently, I hate this HUD and the big flashing "mine warnings"...

It would be a good time to show how our version will look like.

Those aren't mine warnings, it's to tell you how close the enemies have to come to set it off. There wouldn't be much point in enemy mines if the HUD warned you about them now would there.

It DOES. Not when he catches the trap but when he throws it back at the wall. There's a minimal loss of Eve.

Ok, so the glowing green things. It's maybe good for a console game, I don't know, but it is most certainly not good for a PC game. I know there's an other team working on things like this but I just need some proof it won't look like this.

Well I actually like the fact how it shows your enemy's health bar. it add to the strategy a bit.

I like that too, it's just too big. I'm sure it looks cool on a TV screen but on a monitor... I don't think so.

Yes your right, it was just too small for me to notice.

As far as the health bar goes, I'm certainly glad it's there especially in the case of the big daddy. Otherwise we would have no idea whether or not we were hurting him.

I quite like the health bar, as someone else has said, to help defeat the BDs, fighiting him for so long and never knowing when he would die could get strenuous. But I'm also glad that they disappear as soon as your aim is not on an enemy, so the healthbar is strictly for fights. Also, I don't see any problems with the HUD, it's really simple, it's not too crowding, the only problem I had before was the arrow, but on that video, it certainly looks like you can turn it off.

I'm REALLY hoping that the number 9 doesn't go down when you die, because that means... *chokes up* LIVES!!! RUUUNNNN!!!

Mattsays' questions answered in no particular order:

Devs have debug codes they program into the game for testing. Sometimes they leave them in so the players can use them, sometimes they take them out.

There is a gene tonic that allows you to simplify or bypass hacking, I don't remember what it's called, it's like "hacking genius" or something.

  33. Oh man. I'm not letting myself watch this video until I get home from work, that way I have something BioShock-related to look forward to. How long is it?

I thought it was already confirmed multiple times that you CAN, in fact, turn off the arrow. I'm sorry if that sounded snotty, I'm just kinda tired of hearing about it and the ressurection thing.

Hi all. First post but been reading these forums for several weeks now and felt the need to post on this topic.

I don't intend to cause any hard feelings but I can't disagree with the above statement more. Frankly the health bar in the new video irritates the hell outta me and I hope to the extreme that there will be an option to turn it off as there will be with the guidance arrow.

As for the impact on strategy with regards the health bar I think it actually detracts from the tactical elements of the game not to mention the level of stress (I want to be made to feel stressed out and uncomfortable by this game, it adds hugely to the immersion and, lets face it, if you were in the same circumstances as the player character you'd be freaking out too!) and to have a huge health bar hovering above their heads takes away from that immensely. I'll explain my reasoning behind this.

I want to be worried and, while fighting a BD for example, screaming inside my own head "WHY WON'T YOU DIE?!?!", a health bar takes this away completely as well as such tactical choices such as; If I were low in health I may have to decide should I retreat to heal or continue fighting. If I can see the BD is low on health I'd probably stay and fight or if he were still pretty lively run and heal. The presence of the health bar removes this from being an instinctual choice (The best kind of choices a game can make you feel are your gut choices - it's when a game can achieve this you know that your very much immersed in it) and instead makes it a more clinical one. It's the fight of flight reflex that should be triggered.

There is also the gameplay dynamic. I realise that some things simply have to appear on the screen. The main such example of this being the HUD interface, but lets not forget people this isn't Metroid Prime or some other game where we, as the player character, are viewing this world through some high-tech sensory visor. To have the health bar there, at least in my mind, makes absolutely no sense.

Having said all of the above I would state however that I am very much aware that not everyone will think like me and opinions differ. That is why I would say that the health bars do have a place in the game just please, Ken and the rest of the Irrational team, have the option to disable them for those of us that would like to do so.

Apologies for the long post, I can be guilty of going on a bit some times.

I completely agree with you about the health bar thing..hate..hate

by the way u're right, Figment...
I too thought that too much "informations interface" will ruin that atmosphere of "simulation" travelling around Rapture.
I think that playing FPSs I only need status informations about me, to get a realistic "combat feeling".
