    Weapon upgrades/mods

In the latest GI article, Adam Biessener mentioned Scopes as in rifle scopes.

    http://www.gameinformer.com/games/xc...ectations.aspx

This is the first mention I have seen of any form of modularity to the weapons in XCOM. And I have 2 guesses.

    1. A straight up upgrade to all of that (type?) weapon, no modularity.
    2. An equipped item for a passive ability.

Anyone seen anything else on this topic?

Can't point to a specific source but I know I've heard comments on this before. To my understanding it was individual and passive. Again - can't source the info. Sorry.

Yea I would love to see modular upgrades so that you can add even more customization to your soldiers.

I must say I liked the way UFO:Aftershock did it, both with the weapons and armour modularity.

My guess is that the scopes they are talking about are somehow part of some other mechanic. Like huzardadi said, it may be a soldier ability; or perhaps it's an upgrade that applies to all weapons by research, manufacture, or facility upgrade.

I may be wrong tho. We'll just need to wait and see!

The scope sounds like it takes up an inventory slot, but I'm sure there are passive upgrades too.

Do we know for sure that there are "inventory slots". We know that you will be able to customize weapons and armor, but I've yet to see a screen with "slots" or squares to fill.

It makes more sense for it to be a function of an individual's equipment slots. In the Angry Joe interview, they talk about each class having periodic either/or upgrades - making a certain sniper accuracy or damage focused, for example.

It would make sense if you can further tweak an "accuracy" sniper with a scope upgrade, where a "damage" sniper might choose to spend that weight on extra ammo, or a barrel/caliber upgrade.

Wasn't the foundry going to be used for modifying equipment?

Edit: equipment mods might also explain the questions in another post. In one video a support (or was it assault?) carries a plasma sniper rifle that does up to 15 damage. The sniper's plasma sniper rifle does up to 10 damage. Could be class mod also.

Thats exactly what I was thinking. We know you have the engineer building, but when they discussed the foundry in the base video I assumed you would be able to enhance the weapons to a certain degree.

Hey, Faraxis! We're confused. Maybe you should cover how this works in your next interview.

I vote they give Heniv a beta copy and have him answer our questions.

To start, these are all just my personal assumptions but I do feel like they will be pretty accurate.

So basically the way I see this is there is no inventory in the sense that you do not have a backpack or space for items that you can jigsaw and puzzle to fit different items similar to the first one.

I do assume that it will have an inventory system for units though that will be a basic paper doll that has 3-4 attachments.
    Armor
    Weapon
Accessory (Or equipment slot 1 if you prefer)
    Accessory 2?

There has to be some way to dictate what armor and weapon at a minimum your guys are using. (Not sure if this will be drop downs or scroll bars but that's just aesthetic)
In the same way that you equip weapons I expect an equipment or accessory slot that gives your character either passive buffs or ability's in the same fashion as weapons/armor.

So basically accessory slot 1 do you chose grenade which gives a skill that lets you use x grenades in a fight, medipack which gives you a skill that lets you heal x times in a fight, or a scope that gives you a passive range buff of x.

I can see the system working more or less as you described. I think that makes a lot of sense.

We can also already see some soldiers with pistol icons shown small beside their ammo bar for their main weapon.

I hope it's similar to how UFO did it, I liked that way of customizing gear...though considering UFO is all I've played I can't really compare it to anything.

Because the game will be on consoles, whatever system they use will be very simplified. I don't think they will have dozens of square slots like before because that would be clunky on a console (it's kind of clunky anyway)

However, simplicity doesn't always need to mean less decisions/strategy.

It's not like it is a hard UI thing to do...just look at Crysis for consoles, easy.

No way, you're FAR too thorough and organised. Don't listen to him Firaxis, I've seen the info he can compile from a few screenshots, giving him a demo is the same as giving him the entire game.

The demo should definitely be given to lazy gamers whose vague information will keep it mysterious... a gamer like myself for example! That's be much better! Whose with me? Huh, guys? C'mon, put your hands up! Let's get a slow-clap going! Or a chant: Get it to the Cuzin! "C" to the "U" to the "zin"!

Heniv should get a job writing their game instruction manual. Hell, he's already halfway finished with it.

Then, mysteriously, leaked copies of it appear on the Internet.
