Unhappy Civ 5 crashes upon loading a saved game

so after about playing an awesome 4 hour session earlier, I decided to start up where I left off. Unfortunately everytime I attempt to load my game the game just freezes, so I have to ctl+alt+del to get out. Could someone please give me a hand, I don't want to lose all of my progress

And yes my computer could handle it just fine

Once I press "load game", bam, it crashes. I tried testing a few things, it seems to work it I pick a small map, but if I try to load a big map, it crashes. That sucks :/

I have the same problem. Loading a savegame = crash. Tried :
    - Reinstalling Civ 5 (3 times)
    - Reinstalled steam
    - Several combinations of graphics/sound settings both ingame and in the drivers
    - Savegames on small -> huge maps
    - Offline mode
    - Moved the savegames to my second comp(older one), works fine on that one, so not a corrupt save

Nothing works. And yes all my drivers + windows 7 is up to date. Its even a fairly new install.
And I have no problems in any other games.

Please fix this before expansion comes out.

Do fresh/new games work? So is it just savegames?
    Could you try the following:
    - delete/rename the folder to be found under: C:\Users\xxx\Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 5

Also, if you could post/send the following 2 files that'd be great:
    - your dxdiag
    - Any "fresh" .mdmp files in your steam game folder (under C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\sid meier's civilization v)

What happens if you start a new game? Does it still crash?
Again the files mentioned above would be really appreciated! Thanks :-)

Yes i can play fresh games , but I can't save and then load it later.
I have tried deleting the civ5 folder in "My games", I've even cleaned any reference to steam and civ5 from the reg. database when reinstalling.

I'll try and upload the two files you requested. Hope it works, been years since i had to upload anything

    I have the same issue.
I was playing with a friend a multiplayer game. I was the host and saved the game to continue it later.
When we tried later my game freeze and crashes.

We tried with different configuration options, loading single player, even I sent him the saved games and he could get into them. It was only my system crashing. Before this last patch loading a saved game worked fine, it started since then.

I tried renaming the files, checking files and reinstalling game. None of it worked so far.

I uploaded the crash files here:
    http://www.filefactory.com/file/687o.../n/Crashes_zip

    And here is the DxDiag:
    http://www.filefactory.com/file/5d2r...5/n/DxDiag_txt

    My PC settings are:

    Intel Core i7-720 QM 1.6GHz
    NVidia GeForce GT 330M
    4GB DDR3 Memory
    500GB HDD

Also I have an issue opened with this Ticket ID: 113756

If more information is required, please request it and I'll be glad to help

It looks like an issue with special characters in your Windows username, or perhaps in the file path to "My Documents/My Games".

Out of curiosity, if you create a new login for windows that contains no special characters in the username, does this correct the problem for you? I'm not suggesting this as a permanent fix, I just want to see if this is your specific problem.

    Thanks!

    Hi,
I still have this exact problem: No way to load saved games, it always crashes without any message. Before the latest patch it worked just fine, now it doesn't. I haven't changed anything.

Is it too much to expect, that this will be fixed soon? Or fixed at all?! By the people who have caused it? Because the game is UNPLAYABLE if you can't save it.

Also the button "get mods" which should open some steam window to browse mods does absolutely NOTHING.

    thanks!

As soon as I load any kind of game, my computer freezes and I have no controls. Even in a new game, when it opens, all I can do is sit and stare at my settler. Anybody help??

Please try this and let me know if this is your problem. You could also copy and paste the full path to your My Documents/My Games directory so I can take a look. Thanks!

...well at least I have "special" characters in my windows username, like "á". That's how my name is written.
So this is a hint for your theory is right. I don't want to mess with user accounts on this comp, so perhaps someone else could make the test.

All I know that it worked perfectly before the patch, not after that. I would be very happy if you could solve that. I'm not able to play since the patch.

And the "get Mods" button is not working. The same reason?

Ok, I just tried what you suggested, it seems to be the problem, because the test user without "special" characters could load the game.

But the "get mods" button still does nothing.

I would be quite happy if you could solve these. Thanks!

We're working on a fix for the special characters issue now. For the "Get DLC" button, verify that you have Seam Cloud enabled, as well as the community layer.

I tried starting Civ5 on my guest user (My main user has an accent in it) and it still seemed to crash on loading. Is it because the save game is still in the My Games folder in the username folder with an accent in it? Should I move it somewhere? Thanks for the help.

  24. #24
    Yes, try moving it elsewhere

I tried moving it to the corresponding folder on my "Guest" user, and then deleting it from the My Games folder on the account with the accent. Launched Civ5 on Guest user, started game, saved, exited, loaded, crashed. The game simply remade the folder in My Games on accented account and so it seems that there is the same problem. Any suggestions? Is there a way to change the default place for civ5 preferences and save files?

  26. #26
Im sorry, i thought you knew how to move it

To move it for real, right click on the My Documents folder - select properties, choose location, and then make a new path

Thank you for your reply and the attempt to fix the loading problem.

As for the "get mods" button (to be clear, it's the button that appears after you click on "mods" in the main menu and "accept". It's called "get mods" and not "get dlc" and should, according to the mouseover text, open a steam layer. In the old version I could browse a lot of mods. It took me some time but I found both "steam cloud" and "community layer" settings on steam. Both are on. But still, nothing as I click "get mods". I didn't found anything in the forums about this. Maybe I make some noob mistake?

I have the same problem - been playing for 6 months without a hitch, and on June 17, couldn't load any previous game. It clearly seem to follow a patch/update. I suspect it is the one that changed the way the CIV5 loads (a new still picture showing various artistic renditions of historical scenes pops up after the intro video).

I don't have any "special" character in my Windows user name, but my Windows is in French, so there is a "è" in the Bibliothèques/Documents/My Games path.

Looking forward to this being fixed - I like starting new games, but it's no fun it that's all I can do.

the accented e is the issue.

If you move your my documents folder, the issue will not happen anymore.

    To OP:
Problem is with latest buggy patch.
Wait until a fix is released and don't break your nerves over something that's not your fault.
Firaxis should either let us roll back to previous working patch, or release a new one that fixes this dangerous bug.
I'm calling it "dangerous" cause my one-year-old PC almost stopped working after the continuous crashes of the game.
I hope that CPU or other parts are not damaged and I won't launch it again until the fix is released.

PS. The "character solution" would be a solution if the game didn't crash to English-only-characters installations. Developers are deviating from the problem if they spend their time over characters and not to what's really causing the crashes.
It has to be something with the CPU, because although the system sompletely freezes (not even ctrol-alt-del works - at least for me), some other services keep on working (i.e. the internet radio on my browser).

  36. #36
PS, The character solution, IS a solution, to THAT SPECIFIC ISSUE.

Since you clearly have no intention of trying to get assistance in getting your problem solved, kindly dont sabotage other players, whos problem is easily solvable.

PPS - The BSOD are your issue, not Firaxis'

BSOD is my issue since Civ5's latest patch started causing them to my PC.
As I've explained already I have tried all workouts that have been suggested to no solution.
What I definitely need from Firaxis is to either fix the problem now, or let us roll back to previous working patch.

I cannot understand why, after so long of flawlessly playing the game, do I have to stop playing it because Firaxis cannot handle their problematic patch.

It is so easy to roll it back, take their time to fix the game, and then offer a bug-free patch. They should do it now.

PS. In some other topic you were trying to blame the player's hardware although you know quite well that in this specific period we have this problem with the patch. Please explain to people that most probably it's the patch's problem and then tell them whatever else.

PPS. I understand that the character problem might be one of the problems of this patch and changing it might help some of the people. Still, Firaxis should try to solve all of the problems and not stick to one or two already mentioned.

  38. #38
No, BSOD is your issue, period.

It is as simple as that.

If .01% of the playerbase is having an issue with BSOD, it is the .01% issue.

    You are the .01%

Seeing a fanboy even on technical issues...well, that's a good one.
So, you don't agree that patch is bugged, right?
And why are there so many people in the forums crying about the buggy patch?

And by the way, you don't really get what I'm saying.
Even if I'm just the 0,01% of the players that have a problem, Firaxis should give me the option to roll back to the version that worked flawlessly.
At some point they will find the problem and fix it. Until then I can live with the game on previous version.
Not difficult to get this one, right?
