    Crash with new patch

I have been playing Civ V since the release (XP) with no problem, but with the new patch, the game starts and the starting warrior and settler just sits there, I can't move them nothing (nothing but crash my computer).

Try posting your dxdiag. If you were marginal to play before, the patch may have pushed you over the edge.

So all when they said that the SR wouldn't change, it was all talk :|

Well, on to the store then, I knew the day would come, I have post-poned it all year

I have the same problem. Please could you explain to me what I need to do to fix it? I don't know what dxdiag means or SR for that matter.

I have only had the game a few weeks and now I can't play it at all. I am not very good with technical stuff, but I have been a civ fan since the first one and I just want to play.

Start > Run > type dxdiag. The information there can be saved and someone here can can perhaps analyse it for you. SR = System Requirement.

They said that the system requirement should be changed, but obviously it has. I am a little above minimum, so I have knew that eventually it will go down the drain, although I am surprised (and angry) that a simple patch has caused it. If that is the case.

Thanks for your help. My husband has now pinched my laptop and I am on the iPad so I can't do anything now.

My laptop has windows 7 - is that not compatible with the game any more?

Fenhorn, NOONE SAID THE REQS CHANGED.

We are saying, your PC, may never have MET the specs.

Silver, of course win 7 is compatible.

Without seeing your DXDIAG, we cant begin to diagnose the problem

I have posted a load of stuff above. I don't know what any of it means. I hope that this is OK to post and won't allow anyone to steal my identity or anything, for all I know there could be all sorts of personal information coded into there.

The game worked fine before the patch which suggests there is nothing wrong with my computer, it is the game that is at fault. Many people are posting about it which suggests it isn't a problem with my machine.

I paid good money for this game only a few weeks ago and it is now rendered useless by this update. All the posts on here seem to be in some impenetrable code which I can't understand and there seems to be no way to contact the developers of the game directly.

Something called 'steam' appeared on my computer when I installed the game - I don't understand what this is either, could this be an issue? I am not a computer expert, just a normal person who happens to like this one computer game (and this really is the only one I ever play).

Sorry for the rant, I am just upset and annoyed and feel like I have been badly ripped off with absolutely no recourse.

Before you feel badly ripped off, make sure your PC is in order, as it stands, it is not.

Right now you are complaining about road maintenance, when the tires on your car, are many years old, and no longer in good condition.

Start by updating your video driver, it is from 2010.
Secondly, you need to realize, that this notebook, is at the very low end, of what can run civ5, and you should set it accordingly.
Third, what modifications have you downloaded.

It is completely unfair to blame the game, when you yourself, STATE that you have little computer knowledge to back that blame up.

Thanks for your help. What is a video driver and how do I update it? By the way this laptop (it is not a notebook) was purchased 12 months ago so it shouldn't be from 2010?

I see what you mean about being unfair but it just seemed weird that there were no problems until the patch downloaded itself last night. Also the computer seems to work fine for everything else.

The only other PC I have is much much older so running the game on that is probably not an option. If you have any (simple) suggestions on how to set the game so it will work I would be grateful.

I'm off to do a bit of googling now to see if I can work out what the mysterious 'video driver' means.

Please don't shoot the messenger, but your videocard has very little memory. Your processor is low end, comparable to the single core Intel processors. And is actually below the minimum required. I think that even when you do update your driver, the game might still not run

I'm guessing the video driver is pre-installed when you bought the laptop (notebook is just another word for the same thing). As video drivers get updates every two months or so, one from 2010 is really old. You should check the HP site for Presario CQ56 drivers or the AMD site for ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250 drivers.

A video driver is what makes it possible for programs to send instructions to your video card. If it's outdated, the instructions might not be optimal or simply lacking.

Thanks for the explanation. According to HP, everything is up to date and there are no new video drivers for this machine. I checked with AMD too.

I guess my Civ days are over then. What a shame, I have been playing on and off for about 15 years.

I think there is plenty of us affected by the new patch, its shouldn't a problem with our computers if only yesterday it worked correctly.
    Thanks

That's what I originally thought but unfortunately it sounds as if I (and possibly others) were lucky it worked before and that luck has run out.

Right now when I log in, I am unable to load any saved games - the load screen remains blank, and the window that usually displays my civilization's info remains empty, except for the civilization icon (which always displays as American), and the unique unit/building icons (which always both show as The Pyramids).

When I start a new game, I have the same issues. The only difference is that a new game will actually start.

When it does start though, my warrior has the settler icon, and my settler has no icon. When I select the warrior, all action icons (on the lower left hand side) are displayed as empty icons with a red circle, with a single red line through them all. The settler has no icons when I select it.

When I build a city (via shortcut, obviously), the icons for all build options are empty, my palace is using The Pyramids icon and all tiles in my city radius are displaying as if being worked (whether being worked or not). When selecting a technology to research, the list itself is empty other than the option of opening up the tech tree. When opening up the tree, it is also empty, misaligned, and there is no way to scroll it to the right. This obviously prevents me from selecting a technology to research, which in turn prevents me from ending my first turn of the game.

Perhaps most interestingly of all is what happens when I open up the civilopedia - it's empty. Well, that's not entirely true. Each sub-category has it's "Home Page". Also, each category other than "Improvements" has the "Cities" tab at the top, and when clicking on it I am taken straight to the "Game Concepts" category.

Now, I'm sure someone out there will be wanting to ask me for my DXDIAG, but really, nothing in the information that can be provided through that could cause all of these issues, so I'm not going to bother. My computer is well above the suggested specs, and I keep it close enough to up to date.

The problem is in your patch and you know it you are only stalling for time with this post your DXDIAG crap. My DX didn't change yesterday, you changed the game making it unplayable and you don't have a clue how to fix it. Try honesty for once it works really well.

Do you have any active mods in your mods directory?

Also, try renaming your My Documents/My Games/Sid Meier's Civilization" folder, and start a new game.

    Thanks, and let me know.

I was just trying to politely say that the patch screwed up the playing capability for many of us. I'm not thinking it any more, I've got the evidence with the pile of posts the forum has recieved in the last 24 hours related with this issue. You could have spared the comment, pinpointing little "mistakes" on our posts, apart from being rude, doesn't help fix the problem and that's my only interest.

    Except you didnt do that.

We know the patch caused issues - We know because 2K told us in advance

2k Knows it would cause issues - They knew because Firaxis informed them.

Firaxis knew it would cause issues - they passed the information on, as it was a neccessary step in preparing for the Expansion.

Pinpointing your "Mistake" as you said, is more than that, when an issue like this comes in, the legitimate issues, get drowned out by the others who have no intention of actually asking for, or needing help.

OMG, the threadthingytrick (see an official about that) worked, I can settle and move units again.

Edit. And with that said, of course I don't know for how long, but hey lets not curse the darkness when we at least have a little light.

No mods active at all. I haven't run with any mods active for a few months, and deleting any mods I have is the first thing I do when I run in to issues with games.

Renamed the folder, no change at all to what I have already described.

Not sure if it will help or not, but I'll post the newly created database.log and Lua.log
