Savegame as Denmark suddenly changes to Spain after update plus massive unhappines.

I don't know why this happened. It started after steam updated the game. I thought to my self. "Excellent bug have been fixed and new content have been added" untill i saw it completely messed up my save game i have spent weeks on.
I have tried loading up earlier savegames, but results are the same. It changes my Viking CIV to the Spanish CIV and my happnies goes from 20+ happy that i had before to a staggering 60+ unhappiness. ;(

I have also tried switching DLC ON and off, (thought it was a DLC issue cause Vikings/denmark is DLC and the reason it changed my CIV to Spain. But that didn't work. I then tried rebooting the game, etc but the "Spanish picture" keep poping up on load screen, eventhough save game clearly says Harald Bluetooth 1952 AD etc etc... (not only the loading screen, but ingame CIV is changed aswell. Unit color goes from the normal brownish viking colour, to the redish/pink spain has. Also civ bonuses viking have are replaced with the spanish ones instead) So basically it's a complete civ makeover! Basically my game is unplayable and totally messed up now.

what can i do to fix this?

    Please help! Thanks!

Suggest you read the patch notes. The new patch does not like saves all that much. 2kgreg did warn about this.

Sigh! Then i guess everything is aye okay and just fine arent it?... cause they warned about it somewhere, and then it's my own fault i play my game as i paid with my own money and as i please? No. I am not supposed to check that my save games aren't all of sudden rendered completely useless after they "fix" the game? :/ I'm sorry that doesn't make any sense. At all. Bad programming IMO! Oh, the work we just did messes up all the pre-update data? Well that's a shame. I say it's still a job well-done! Approved away guys!

Edit: Just read the patch notes. As a minimum they should have made a ingame warning telling that your saves might get broken, and a option to wait updating. But i guess steam f*cks this up, cause it updates the game before even loading it. Thanks steam :/

I've had the very same issue. I was well into my Renaissance era when this hit me. I didn't even know there was a patch upcoming. I just play the game casually when SWtOR populations are down so I don't scrounge about the forums. Hopefully they come out with a fix for the fix. Heh...funny after almost two years they still haven't got this game fixed.

But I'm right there with you Sathlagor. This is total B.S.

There is no fix coming for this issue

It was a compromise that they needed to make

I've also had this happen. My Inca savegame turned to Mongols.
Do we just trash the saved games or...?

Bah! Compromise my a*s! There is no such thing. There is a job well-done, OR there is slovenly work like: We don't care about our fans who already paid us their money, there is no more money in it for us.
But tbh sorry to say that I'm not at all surprised to hear that they don't plan to fix it. I'm getting really sick and tired of all my favorite game genres from my childhood like CIV, Heroes etc are getting neglected in this way. They really should pay the fans and the classics more respect... Disappointing.

If the game were getting neglected, there would have been no patch, and your save game would not have been altered.

Fortunately for me, I am in 1972, in the middle of taking over a major continent and had over 200 happiness when this fantastic, incredibly convenient, completely unexpected update occurred as I tried to boot up civ5, but the Danish war machine is not designed to be driven by the Queen of Spain.

Here's my story of how I came to buy civ5, the last type of this game I've purchased being Age of Empires II: I walking around at PAX, the line was for the civ5 expansion was super short, and I had heard a guy saying they were giving away copies of the game after the demo, so I hopped in line. I still ended up waiting almost an hour, but I really enjoyed what I saw and started getting excited to play civ5. At the end of the demo they didn't hand out any copies or codes or anything, I guess they ran out, but I was so pumped I bought the deluxe edition on steam that night when I got home.

Since then I've played through several times, I'm playing it more than any other game, but at no time have I felt compelled, or has it ever been suggested to me through Steam or in-game, that I should visit a forum or a website or something to hear about a patch that is being put out for the game. Why should I think that is a necessary part of the game experience? As the consumer of the product, I am not being engaged in any way besides the product itself. So how am I supposed to know about an update before I click the big "PLAY" button? My only knowledge of the update is when the little box pops up after I click play and it starts immediately "installing"--it didn't even say "updating"--Civilization V.

Now I'll be honest, I'm not that old, I'm a pretty smart, nerdy guy, I clicked "cancel" as fast as I could and took a breath; what the hell was that auto-update business? I suppose, being a nerd and smart and all as I claim to be, I should have done what I would tell someone else to do if they asked me "what the heck is going on?": Google it. Right? It's how we can protect ourselves from junk like this. But I didn't Google it, I said to myself, "you know what, I really enjoy this game, I thought the guy giving the demo seemed really keyed in on the user experience, I trust them." So when I load my game and my data is screwed up, and I go and read about how "In some cases, previous saves may not work correctly after updating", I wonder how the decision was reached to release a patch that they knew would ruin users' experiences, and how they list it under the last heading in the list of updates, which is not named [WARNINGS] or [BUGS CREATED], but [GENERAL].

Furthermore, the language of that bullet, "In some cases, previous saves may not work correctly after updating", suggests that they knew it only affected certain games (Danish empires, for example), so why couldn't they list the games that may be affected, or provide a link to a list? Maybe it does exist and I haven't looked hard enough, but the point I'm trying to make here is why is it up to me, the consumer of the product, to inform myself about these things after known, created problems have been put upon me? Clearly the users can be communicated and interacted with, so why would you knowingly release something that will have a very strong negative effect on the user experience with the game, and if you must make such a compromise, why would you not reach out to your users and offer apologies and try to help them as much as possible?

I am stunned, saddened, and disappointed. I've been trying to muster up enthusiasm to finish out my world conquest as the Spanish Empire, and I think when I finish up this post in a moment, I'm going to boot up the game and see how it goes for a couple turns, but the sour taste left in my mouth from my experience with this update has me worried about what sort of compromises people will be willing to make in future updates, and with the upcoming expansion. I for one am now hesitant to purchase it, whereas a few hours ago I couldn't wait to enter my credit card information. Sorry for the length of my post, and thank you for reading.

QuantumTarantino, You sound like my save getting altered is a good thing. It's messed up - in case you haven't been reading any of what I've been typing. And if it was indeed not neglected, like you claim, there wouldn't have been so many bugs in the release in the first place and should ATLEAST been fixed way before now, and not with a so called "comprise". It's ☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺. End of discussion.

QueenIsabellaOfDenmark...LOL I had a good laugh when i read your name Good post, enjoyed reading it.

I can only say your logic is the same as mine. It seems like they knew that they were breaking the experience for all the players who was playing DLC, but estimated that it was a "small" price to pay that "only" a certain amount who would get their game experience ruined. They say, a compromise - I say, a ☺☺☺☺ing ridiculous excuse for not doing patch properly.

There is no way around it, just gotta face the facts. That my great game experience have been butchered by a incomplete patch and that my quest for domination victory as Harald Bluetooth, which was only hours away, is gone.

Guess I'm too much of a fan to stop playing the game because of this, but it leaves me with a realization that gaming industry is going down a sad path, where money and time is the important factor and not the final result. Where sayings like "putting pride into what you do" only belongs to story line in the games we play, and not in the minds of the developers/directors who make them.

I'm out. I already spent more time on this stupid issue than i planned to.

I didnt mean to sound like it is a good thing.

I will not pretend however, that it is not a NECCESSARY thing.

You misunderstand me. I don't have issues with patches in general. Just the incomplete ones that fix one thing and ☺☺☺☺s up other mechanics in the game. Like this one.

This happened to me as well, except my Spain turned into Inca, and the symbol in the menu (in the part that shows your game settings) was Genghis Khan. Except it only seemed to affect the visuals, I still have Spain's ability of double natural wonder yields, and not the extra hill movement. But I can build terrace farms. It also messed up the NPC civs. Denmark is now Spain led by a second Pachacuti, whereas Mongolia has been replaced completely by Babylon.

While this save-game ☺☺☺☺up may have been a compromise, I would have liked some advance warning that this was going to happen. All we got was "Steam Workshop, wooo!" and then the patch comes out all of a sudden and BAM! broken savegames. This is not a good way to handle things, especially since the patch notes suggest that they KNEW that it would mess up savegames.
