Please include a hardcore mode in XCom

Please allow us to choose to play the game on a hardcore mode where we cannot save after every single good turn, but only save on exiting the game, and have forced saves on exit.

IE: a mode where losing a soldier means you lost the soldier, and you can't jsut go back to 'save' them.

    -

of course, also keep a normal mode for those who prefer being ablle to do just that.

Not to worry, it is already confirmed there will be a hardcore mode called 'Ironman'.

    Welcome to the forum, Bahriel.

As WTFelix pointed out, you have nothing to worry about. Firaxis has us covered with even higher levels of difficulty than the original (one is essentially a survival mode!). The easiest way to get caught up on what we know so far is to browse THIS wonderful fan-created summary thread. Also, the search tool can be used to ferret out threads about specific topics (including difficulty).

As WTFelix said they've added an ironman mode that autosaves and uses a single save slot. The impression I've gotten is that when you see something happen, it's already been saved so you can't even 'power off' to avoid the results.

    And welcome to the forums.

you could just, you know, not save after every good turn and only save inbetween missions. Yeah it's already in, but seriously, what a waste of time implementing.

    Get some self control -_-

Ah but even having the option would remove some of the horror
I wouldn't save, but that's as much because i tend to forget to.

    thanks for the warm welcome

Yea, just came back from Ibiza (probably the only American that goes there). Just got done assaulting my own UFOs : Unidentified Foreign Female Objects that is ! You can include that in the repertoire of Xcom:EU one-liners.

I'm guessing that's a "no". If it was, they wouldn't advertise it as "see how long you can last". It's an easy matter for them to keep ramping up the alien attacks until each mission becomes unwinnable. Either that, or just remove whatever process takes you into the endgame.

I might see a new IP making the claim of an "impossible" mode just to seem hardcore. But Firaxis knows the X-COM fans and knows that they like a challenge. They aren't going to oversell the difficulty of a game that's know for being tough.

IDK, designers often overestimate the toughness of their games. In D3 it was supposed to take 'months' to beat Inferno - I think it was day 2 or 3 that someone completed it.

I'm going to hazard to guess that once you know the mechanics and behind-the-scenes formulas well, you'll be able to scum-save your way through Impossible.

Now, if someone beats Impossible on Ironman mode ... That would be something. I really hope it either cannot be done or it is limited to only a few lucky (or smarty!) souls. Otherwise, you'd be better off calling it 'very hard' difficulty instead of impossible.

    LOL @ myself.

I'm pretty sure I will be starting the game on Ironman and Classic difficutly. At least, I will try a couple times. I like the idea of being forced to play the game with the cards you are dealt. If you pooch the mission because you make a bad mistake, then you should be forced to try to recover from it. Therefore, you won't do wreckless things. Plus, it makes "aborting a mission" actually useful - ie- when you take too many losses and you need to withdraw. Otherwise, with Save/Load, the number of times you will actually abort a mission can be counted on my penile implant.

I'm pretty sure I will back down to the regular mode if I become too frustrated The only reason I am reloading in my current playthrough of XCom is if the silly mouse interface thinks I am clicking on the screen and moves my soldier when I was just trying to reposition the camera.

Dude, they really should have an "Impossible mode" option. With the mouse-over tooltip "Yep, we really mean you won't win."

Then just fling more and more aliens at you each month to the point where you simply can't survive, and if you somehow make it a few months, a base assault mission where the aliens spawn right behind each squaddie.

They mentioned too a large part of the difficulty increase would be an improved AI. I mean, if aliens all put down their guns and threw grenades every attack, they'd be crazy scary.

I imagine there's a lot of scary things like this that aliens CAN do, but often don't. On impossible they probably do these things whenever it's in their best interest.
