all the trailers and gameplay footage show that soldiers have no helmets ,even the ones with the fly armor, why?is this just for publicity showing face features and customization options?or the will be no helmets ?

hopefully it will be an option, toggle on/off.
Personally, I like the soldiers not having helmets; I find it gives them more character. I will acknowledge that some will say this isn't as "realistic". Lord knows if I ACTUALLY commanded a squad of multinational soldiers wielding plasma rifles into extra-terrestrial combat, I would make them wear helmets with their archangel flying suits.
I hope I am getting a few hat/ helmets for TF2.. When I pre order XCOM on STEAM..

"That's the last time I let you take out a SHIV on a mission! Next time you get a cart pulled by donkeys!"![]()
This just became my new favorite thread.
*throws smoke grenade of approval*
They are saving all the cool helmets for the underwater sequel. XCOM: Enemy from the Depths.
- Have fun
I think no helmets looks great! More individuality!
Take a look at this image and tell me what you'd prefer:

The picture shows that helmets are definitely included, the only thing you need to worry about is whether or not its a DLC only thing. I'd honestly be a bit dissapointed if it were =/
Helmets through codes and DLC? It's Halo all over again! =P
but the game looks okay though ,i really like the gameplay footage they ve showned except the glam cam that i l turn off ,hehe ;D
I'd like to have helmets on my rookies and no helmets on my vets, but unfortunately, the small number of the squad members kinda ruins that.
I'd also like to pull a Mass Effect; no-helmets in no-combat situations, with helmets once inside a "dungeon". However, since the squad is never with suits in a no-combat situation, that kinda ruins it too.
Ah! I have it! No helmets when the air is clean or when it's daytime, with helmets when in a heavily smoked stage or during nightfall (giving the illusion of breathing / viewing assistance)
....... I'm such a nerd.
I hate to throw a wrench in this discussion, but one concept image is not definite confirmation of helmets in the game. Have seen this discussion before and when that image surfaced combined with wishful thinking it apparently equalled confirmation.
Pre-order don't say anything about helmets, it mentions "aesthetic upgrades to armor suits, including the new Hyperion and Reaper soldier armor kits." and "colors and tints for all armor sets in the game".
Helmets may be in the aesthetic upgrade, or it may not.
Seen from screenshots, the armour-loadout are a single suit choice with no options, the soldier customizing screen does have a "Head" switcher that may include a helmet variation (but I doubt it).
I don't want to ruin it for anyone, but bear in mind; that picture is the only time in any screenshot or video helmets are shown. So don't jump to conclutions.
I personally prefer helmets for that threatening and imposing aesthic of elite soldiers. I mean look at the Helghast with their glow red visions/helms.

I love going into battle with my helmet
There should be helmets, I don't care about realism. The thing is, helmets always give that aesthetic look, also, different armors, different helmets.
It should be an option, if you don't want helmets, switch it off, it shouldn't be too hard.
I'm a fan of RPGs and I love it when I get an helmet that looks awesome. The samurai used masks with the aspect of demons, that had a psychological effect on enemies, maybe you're like, pff I know it's a mask, but in the heat of battle, friends dying all around you, you see this dude wearing samurai armor and a threatening helmet with a mask, sword in hand, you're going to piss yourself...
If you need any more reasons to add helmets, just look at Iron Man, forget about realism and the fact that he flies at top speed he needs a helmet, just think about it, whenever he puts his helmet on, you know it's on, you know you're F'ed, besides, it looks bad ass!
Come on, please. I'll cry ;_ ;
I don't mean to pee on the campfire here but Viking horned helmets are an anathema to the Norse culture.
Actual Viking helms looked similar to this, on the whole Norse culture was iron poor with most of the very valuable material devoted to Ax and tool production.
Thanks to Asterix & Obelix and Skyrim this mythology carries on =)
I was gonna say that
Yes same here xD
But... they do look cool =3
I know that Vikings wearing horned helmets is an invention from Romantism on the 19th century and have nothing to do with Norse culture, thanks for the reminder though
Asterix & Obelix are Gauls rather than Norse (unless you are talking about the 'Asterix and the Normans' album).![]()
Hollywood movies sometimes neglect the helmets, or make them terribly flimsy; Just get used to a lack of helmets like you do as blue lighting in hollywood movies meaning it's really dark
I wonder if game designers realize just how many minor things are important to one group or another? LOL
Gotta say the idea of helmets never even occurred to me. I'll be looking more for the underlying engine/tactics to work and for an interface that I don't have to fight with. As long as I can tell my units apart at a glance, headgear means next to nothing to me. It's certainly not a realism thing because any units going up against extraterrestrials would include full biological contamination measures. You wouldn't see a scrap of skin, and everyone would have huge breathing filters. Bleh.
Speaking of decoration, I think customizing armor is very realistic in human vs human battles. But somehow I don't see that happening in an XCOM situation. For all we know, that demon or dragon face painted on your squaddie's faceplate may remind the enemy of their dear grandma back home on planet Splortch.
I'd love the armor to be like that though. Not really a fan of not having a helmet as I like armor sets to look complete and I think they are cooler looking and more menacing when the face is not shown. Every game from WoW to Fallout to ghost recon I would put my guys in the fullest facemasking helmets I could find.
I would LOVE for the guys to have this huge pseudo gasmask helmets on while fighting the alien threat, but I think the non facemask thing is a design choice to increase your connection to the characters. I hope there are ways to cover the face, but I understand why they don't. Either way, as I've said, I'd much rather have full sets of armor.
exactly. most of the war paint is not really impressing the enemy, but making yourself feel better - more aggressive, more righteous, more than just a fragile human soldier. I'd love to see soldiers in customized/painted armor. makes them all the more diverse and special.
It was always an annoyance that there wasn't any helmets in the original until powered armor. Cool suits of armor don't look complete without a cool helmet to put on top.
And there's ways to have both facial identification and helmets. For example, something like a transparent version of Halo's EVA helmet could both shield the head and show enough of it to show off Guile hair. I don't think we've ever seen the Titan armor-depending on how bulky it is, a Zone trooper style canopy could be a viable option (loved the zone trooper-only good thing about C&C 3). Basically, lots of big tranparent faceplates and the like.
You could choose between either a helmet or exposing their pretty face in trooper customization. That way both sides would be happy.
The reason helmets aren't in the game is because it goes against everything that Jake is trying to build - that connection with your soldier. In Xcom, once you got armor/full power armor, all your soldiers looked like little clones, and you lost your empathy/identifying with them a little bit. They are trying to preserve that in this game by connecting you with their faces.
Seriously, why spend all this time creating your soldiers faces if all that happens is that you put a helmet on them and can no longer tell if they are male, female, asian, black, white, or pink.
That's precisely why they aren't in.
