Game Doesn't Start (Steam GOTY edition)

    Hello,

I've had this game since December, and it was playing great. After an update at some point, the game is now unable to run. I tried all of the methods to get it back running (uninstall/re-install, verify cache, stop beginning movie, etc.). I even ran a benchmark to see if it would run. The benchmark went off without a hitch, and it seemed that the game would run. However, it doesn't. I get to the menu to select the launch option, and after selecting the option, the game runs a process for a few seconds, and then immediately closes down. No background processes, nothing. I tried both dx9 and dx10/11 options, yet it still crashes.

    Advice to fix it?

Plenty, but first we need information about the machine.

    Please post your DXDIAG

DXDIAG looks good - Do you know WHEN this issue started happening, you mention

After an update at some point, the game is now unable to run
    When was this update?
Have you tried using the windows system restore feature?
Have you done a complete cleaning of your Graphics drivers?

  8. #8
I believe the update would have taken place sometime around February, as I didn't play Civ 5 at all for a long period after early January, and in February a major update was released. I have not attempted to use the system restore feature, purely because I am not entirely certain when the update occured, and it would require many hours of downloads on my part. Yes, I have done a complete cleaning of my graphics drivers.

Its happened that a Steam platform update (not a Civ V update) has screwed up game access. Maybe try verifying your Steam files (not the same as the game cache) and then have Steam recreate your desktop icon.

How do you verify your Steam files?
