    Horror Games

Hey guys, just finished Amnesia and had an insanely fun time! But alas I'm left with a void a yearn for more. Does anyone know any horror games that kind of replicate the horror I felt while playing Amnesia? I know there are games like Silent Hill which are dandy and all but I think the third person view takes from the aesthetic. So please help! I must feel fear!

    Step 1: Get Steam
Step 2: Purchase Half Life 1 (Not HL Source!), it's never more than 10 bucks
Step 3: Download the free mod for Half Life 1, called "Cry of Fear"
Step 4: Experience some of the most intense horror you can find in video games.

I truly find Cry of Fear to be one of the most frightening times of my life thus far. It was that crazy; for me, anyway. Also, it's probably exactly what you're searching for.

See, I too have been searching for the most pristine and atmospheric horror games I can find. I've been focusing on pure co op ones, but I have not found many. Most of them I managed to track down by chance through Sven Co op (another HL mod). Co op horror is difficult to pull off, but if you're just playing with one other person it can work well (Cry of fear has a co op story and it's awesome, but wrought with technical problems preventing me from playing for now). The genre seems to have fallen out of the mainstream gaming industry, with a lot of initial horror franchises taking more of an actiony turn (see Dead Space, Resident Evil, etc).

Look at how awesome some recent games are - imagine devoting that scale of resources to a genuine HORROR game. I yearn for the day. At least Amnesia is getting a sequel.

I think the problem is, is that producer can't afford to gamble with a genre that may or may not hit it off. Not everyone likes a good scare.

I got Amnesia: The Dark Descent as part of the Humble Indie Bundle V the other day. I'll be the first to admit that I'm a wimp- Bioshock scared the bejeezus out of me the first time I played it. I grew out of that level of fear long ago, but I'm still more vulnerable to horror than most people. I expect Amnesia's gonna be quite an experience...

Cry of Fear, Afraid of Monsters: Directors Cut (made by the same group), Penumbra (the game that came before Amnesia)... there's several hours worth of wetting yourself to start with.

So I've given Cry of Fear a try, two chapters into it, no doubt going to be continuing the play-through but I just haven't felt the fear of Amnesia. In Amnesia you're powerless, there is nothing, and I mean nothing, you can do to stop Grunts, Brutes, etc. Its one of few games where the enemy is more powerful them you. CoF gas given me good jump scares, yes but you're able to pop back into it a realize a couple pops of a Glock of a slash of the knife leaves the hacked on the floor. I guess I'm just picky but non the less its a scary game.

I'm shocked Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth hasn't been mentioned. It's a few years old, but doesn't lack in creepiness. Give it a play, pee yourself, then come back to this thread and thank me.

Just picked up the original Condemned game. Play it. It makes for some very tense and frightening gameplay!

Edit 25th June: Completed it yesterday. It's short, only ten chapters, but GOOD LORD does it get scary! The opening levels, the construction site and the metro, start it off. They aren't too frightening, probably to get the player comfortable or something. However, it gets increasingly tense from Chapter 5 onwards. The department store level is pretty damn scary, but I was most unnerved by the rundown school. I lost count of how many times I jumped when something unexpected happened in that godforsaken level, the atmosphere is utterly terrifying, not to mention the fact that Ethan Thomas, the protagonist, is prone to hallucinations which just adds to the terror.

Buy it. Right now. It's an amazing game, and I can't wait to pick up Condemned 2: Bloodshot!
