Please put some punishment at being bankrupt...

Too often 1 vs 1 games in MP are no fun at all - just ordinary unit spamming, with complete disregard for the amount of money. Too often I end up against unit-spamming opponents who have no gold at all.
Is there a punishment for having too much unhappiness? Check.
Is there a punishment for having lost access to your necessary strategic resources for a unit? Check.
Is there a punishment for being bankrupt? *Attempts to check but finds none*
It is goddamn annoying to see that happen. Why can there be a 50% penalty on being too unhappy but is there none at being bankrupt? (You know, the most rulers (except during the Napeolonitic time) employed mercs who require gold. No gold? Unhappy mercs and eventually they abandoned you then)

If your kingdom is bankrupt for too long military units (and possibly workers) will start to dissent. This means that your 'mercs' in Napoleonic times will abandon you, or any other time for that matter... If you have 0 gold, but no negative upkeep, than you are not 'bankrupt'.

If you have 0 gold and negative gold per turn then you lose units and -10% research until your gold per turn turns non-negative. A pretty stiff penalty imo

ps: There is also a limit in the number of units you can produce based on your population/number of cities which is correlated with gold per turn

It dosen't work in MP. There is no gold limit for units.

Ok didn't know that, I guess because I was never in negative gold territory, so the only penalty on MP is the production penalty from having too many units. Thats odd; I wonder why./
