Thread: City State takes Empire city shocker!

Exclamation City State takes Empire city shocker!

    Or is it?

I've never seen this happen before in any of my previous games of Civ5, where a City State takes an AI Nation's city:

The year 1776AD, Belgrade took a Songhai city (Nuru Hiva, formerly Polynesian). Admittedly within a few years the city had been razed to the ground (possibly by the City State?)...

Has anyone else seen this happen? Can a City State keep another city or do they automatically raze it?

Yes it happens and yes they typically raze it. Pesky CS's can take an AI city or take one of yours as well if you leave it exposed during a war with another Civ they are allied to.

I've had a CS in one of my games with 4 cities, with city razing turned off.

If they take another city state they can't raze it. I've seen that happen a couple times too. I guess it'd work the same if they took a capital it'd work the same but I haven't seen that yet, my guess is capitals spawn too far from CSs for this to happen unless you overcrowd the map maybe.

I once had a city state take 2 French cities and they kept 1. It's common.

There is this MadDjinn video as well where a CS takes Washington, that was legendary! A CS with a capital city that cannot be razed

I love it when an allied CS takes over cities for me. I get all the benefits (except the gold/culture and some tech) with none of the unhappiness headaches. The best part is - if I needed that city, CSs are much easier to push over than major civs.

In Gods and Kings, this could be a prime Austrian plan - set up City States to conquer all close cities, then marry them later to get everything without the diplo headache of 'killing' a major civ.

The beauty of that is capitals usually have a couple luxuries and some strategic resources so that'd be a really valuable CS for sure.

I've had a city state with three cities. It was brilliant. Three times the science bonus from city states for only one bribe!

I've understood that bribing is only one option and considerably ineffective choice with CS's after G&K is released. Thank god for that
