    Random environments

So. Are levels going to be built randomly?
Or are we pulling from a stock of predesigned levels?

Was playing UFO aftershock lately and I got somewhat sick of playing through the same levels again and again. Classic XCOM seemed to either have a lot to draw from or built them randomly.

From what i understand there are supposedly over 200 hand crafted maps - on each occasion you play them - there are random spawn points and random alien drop points - so basically if you do play the same map irt will always be a different experince.
Think they have said you can play through the campaign twice and you will never come across the same map.
There is also over 70 unique missions so i am guessing certain maps may be used using different missions - so basically even if you did play the same map - the mission may be totally different to the first time you played it.

I would also imagine that maps will be a major source of DLC fodder. Not an unreasonable one, either.
30-50 maps for $5-$12 doesn't sound bad to me.

Seems kinda...sad. I hoped for random maps. I just know I'm going to see the same ones again and again

When I look at the level of detail of the current maps they've shown I don't miss the random ones.

Agreed. In Xcom 1994, I often felt like I was seeing the same ones over and over again despite the fact they were supposed to be random. This was especially true of the terror missions.

Besides which as I said before, the world isn't random, is it? So neither should maps in this game be random; if I land at exactly the same place as I've visited before, I want to see the same map - maybe with a different starting point so it feels different.

You know how many times I've seen the same gas station, the same house, the same duplex, the same warehouse, the same farm house, the same forest, the same park in the originals?

Yeah, I don't know either. Because I can't count that damn high.

Hopefully since the maps are hand crafted, we'll see some differences between countries. Eventually, when the modders get going, I'm hoping for city-specific maps - imagine battling the aliens alongside the Houses of Parliament. Of course, any damage inflicted to them would be purely accidental... yep.

I would bloody well hope so.
Now if the tory and labour party MPs were to be gunned down by Sectoids it would be a disaster. Even more so if it occurred outside of Westminster.

"Sir, our scout reports that chrysalids have entered through the rear windows, the Members of Parliment are getting gunned down by the aliens as the flee out the doors!!"

"Huh... Safeties on men. It turns out the aliens are friendly after all."

    And all that &#*&*@! cabbage!

I honestly think the random map generator was a clever way around memory limitations. When you have twenty tiles on a what ten by ten grid, add in some random features like hay bails and whatnot in a game that was something like four megs. It would take less memory to put those blocks together than it would be to make just twenty different maps.

So yeah, I want some handcrafted love. Plus who knows how many maps will we forget about? There's no way I'm going to remember them all.

Which has nothing to do with a random map generator, but with a limited set of objects for the random map generator.

My point is they experienced seeing the same assets over and over again constantly in the originals. From what we've been told, they have a TON of maps. If they are accurate in their statements, we should rarely be seeing repeats, and only after an exceptionally long playthrough.
