I've had Civ 5 since launch but sometime last summer it stopped working. What happens is that it crashes while loading into the game. So I get through the opening movie and all of that, choose which mode I want to play, and while its playing the voiceover for the particular civ I've chosen I see the loading icon at the bottom flash a few times and then the whole thing crashes back to the desktop with a generic "experienced at problem" error message.
I spent a little time trying to figure it out last summer and discovered that if I ran the Steam verify integrity utility it would tell me one file was messed up. Then it would reload the file but the game did the same thing. Running the intergity utility again would lead to the same result. Checking around the common solution I was told would be to delete the game and reload the whole thing. As my internet connection is not all that fast, I was not in a hurry to do that.
Just the other day I decided to to the full reinstall but it did not solve the problem. I've tried the support solutions on Steam, which mainly involve running the vcredist, dxsetup, and d3dinstall exe's. But that doesn't do anything either. I don't see anything in 2k's official support section that seems to match this issue.
My OS is Vista32, SP2. Like I said the game ran fine up to a point last year and I have no other games with any issues.
One thing I did notice that went away at some point was the DX9 vs DX10/11 option. It simply does not show up on the menu when I load the game. Unfortunately I cannot remember when I noticed that. I did change out my video card about a year ago from Nvidia to ATI, but as far as I can remember the game worked for a time after I made that change.
Any ideas?
